This book is described as a "memoir of addiction." However, if you are looking for a thoughtful memoir on the nature of addiction, and the process of overcoming it, this is not the book for you. The author spends little to no time on the psychological experience of addiction, besides occasionally describing the experience of craving. When she does "overcome" her addiction to heroin, she continues to use speed and drink alcohol. Someone who wants to understand addictive behavior will not gain insight from this book, and addicts themselves may find it rather incomplete and shortsighted. That being said, the book is entertaining. As other reviewers have stated, it is mostly about prostitution. Besides being an inherently interesting and "forbidden" topic, the presentation of prostitution in this book particularly is honest, nuanced, and unapologetic. For that reason, I think In My Skin contributes something important - but not to public understanding of addiction.

This is an interesting and well written story. It is much more a tale of her life as a prostitute than the memoir of an addict, but that's ok. There isn't much to talk about the daily routine of an addict, it is by definition boring and repetitive. Her account of her life as a prostitute is much more lively and full of different characters. One of the good things about this book is that she doesn't play the victim. She makes it clear that she made her choices, and that she enjoyed the thrill and experiences of her lifestyle. The book really changed my preconceptions about sex workers. It takes a lot of gusto and physical stamina to be in this activity. She seems to be a person with lots of energy, who might have been successful in sales, or public relations, any kind of activity where ability to interact with people is a must. Unfortunately, the lesson we get is that skills without values and principles are useless.

First, although the author was indeed in the sex trade in Australia and discusses her experiences at length, there is very little salacious detail -- it's mostly about Holden's feelings, her interactions with other sex workers, and at times the type of client service you see on TV's The Client List -- mixed with some harrowing experiences as well. But I was mostly interested in her tale of addiction, the nature of the habit, and the detail involved in satisfying a five year heroin addiction when you are strapped for money and scrambling to find the next hit. Her road to recovery was a long one, and I'm glad she was able to write about it in the end.Holden's a promising writer, self-reflective, and she brings to life a slice of our world that is happening right around us, even if we are completely unaware of it.

It was very well written. However, I did not "feel the pain" of Kate's addiction. She readily accepted prostitutionas a way of life and seemed to enjoy it.. I found her therapy and withdrawalfar from agonizing. This book would not discourage anyone from drug abuse.

I loved this book. Im not gonna say what happens but, ill tell you that this book will show you the most evilest of sides of the human race. She will tell you all the graphic details of her horrific life. I think I love this book so much because i lived it, i know how it feels. but the way she writes it, it all just seems so messed up from the outside, and so PAINFUL. It will make you think about your own life, how much you really have.***EDITED 10/06/10***I can not remember when i first bought this book. But i read it and i fell in love. I had loaned this book to a friend and it had gotten lost in her travels, so i just bought this book again, and it is on its way. I cant wait to receive it in the mail! this was one of my favorite books a while ago, its just to graphic and real it hurts. but its true, and thats why i have always loved it.

Thanks for writing. I enjoyed this so much. The descriptions of her life painted a perfect picture in my mind of the desperation, sorrow and pain of using. It was a harrowing yet elegant and beautiful story, I feel any woman can relate though.

Addicting book about addiction and all the dirty fun things that go with it. I would recommend this book any day

Gritty and honest memoir, it seems. Beautifully written and full of vivid imagery, this is easily the best account of the realities of addiction I've run across.

Review

Praise for The Grand Escape:* "Bascomb does an extraordinary job of bringing the principal escapees to life.... His account of the Herculean task of digging of the tunnel is fascinating, viscerally evoking the claustrophobic act. He also invests his account with page-turning suspense and colorful detail. The narrative is enhanced by the inclusion of generous period photographs and contemporary maps and charts. Altogether the book is a marvel of research and an example of narrative nonfiction at its finest. It's a grand adventure." -- Booklist, starred review* "Suspenseful reading, enhanced by diagrams and photographs. A fine escapade related with proper drama and likely to be news even to well-read young historians." -- Kirkus Reviews, starred review* "It is a tale of triumph that became a template for future prisoners of war, and Bascomb's heavy, well-cited research provides the information readers need.... A fantastic pick for avid history readers." -- School Library Journal, starred review"Plenty of photographs put faces to the escapees, and diagrams and maps illuminate the prison layout, tunnel, and destinations for border crossing. An introductory "List of Participants" is handy for reader review, and sources notes, bibliography, and index direct readers pursuing research. This, however, is a real-life thriller that's too compelling to relegate merely to World War I report writers." -- Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books"An excellent piece of history presented in a readable, entertaining format." -- School Library ConnectionPraise for The Escape Artists:* "Fast-paced account of a forgotten episode of World War I history.... Bascomb's portraits of the principals are affecting.... Expertly narrated, with just the right level of detail and drama." -- Kirkus Reviews"A crackling good adventure.... Action-packed, briskly paced." -- Publishers Weekly"Paul Brickhill's The Great Escape (1950) is widely considered the best nonfiction book about escapes from wartime prison camps. This gripping new volume gives Brickhill's classic a run for its money.... The book is intensely detailed and written with a prose style that puts readers right there in the camp with the prisoners: when the prisoners hold their breath, terrified of being discovered in a secret activity, the reader will hold his or her breath, too. In the ever-expanding genre of prison-escape sagas, this one joins the top ranks." -- Booklist"A remarkable piece of hidden history, told perfectly... brims with adventure, suspense, daring, and heroism." -- David Grann, author of Killers of the Flower Moon"A ripping yarn -- timely and beautifully told." -- Alex Kershaw, author of The Longest Winter"A rousing story of resilience and courage... Impeccable research and a page-turning narrative." -- Tom Clavin, author of Dodge City"Thrilling, jaw-on-the-floor stuff." -- Alexander Rose, author of Washington's Spies and Men of War"Don't wait for the movie. You'll feel like you're in one by the second page... In the midst of history's cruelest war, a band of Allied POWs brilliantly combined their unique talents, wit, and boundless grit to pull off the greatest breakout of the Great War." -- John U. Bacon, author of The Great Halifax Explosion

Many times in life, the real heroes are slugging it out behind the scenes. Heroes are as much about action as about perseverance against seemingly impossible odds and crushing failure. Neal Bascomb captures all that in his story-telling.

THE GRAND ESCAPE details the people and events around a major prison break from Holzminden during World War I. It begins by giving the reader some background on the events that led up to World War I including the building of professional armies and diplomatic efforts that were either non-existent or ineffectual. It introduces the Hague Conventions that were supposed to legislate the ethical and humane treatment of Prisoners of War.The British entered the war with enthusiasm and with the confidence that the war would soon be over with the Allies victorious. The book talks about the origins of the Royal Flying Corps which began as a rich man's club since they could afford the planes. It talks about the dangers of using this new technology in war where flying speeds were about 75 MPH and the ceiling for these open cockpit vehicles was 10,000 feet. After setting the scene, the book focuses on a few men who were mostly RFC pilots and spotters who crashed in German held territory and who were taken to various prisons. After numerous escape attempts, the most incorrigible found themselves at Holzminden which was commanded by Captain Karl Niemeyer who delighted in tormenting his prisoners in both great and small ways. The book details the some of the prisoners' plans to dig a tunnel out of the prison and then make their way to Holland where they would be out of German-controlled territory. It details the difficulty of the endeavor as men dug in claustrophobic conditions with bad air and the constant fear of tunnel collapse or discovery by the Germans. And getting through the tunnel was only the start of the ordeal. The escapees had to travel through hostile territory with very limited supplies and the constant fear of discovery. The book is profusely illustrated with photographs, maps, and other documents. There is an extensive bibliography, detailed chapter notes, and an extensive index (not provided in the Advanced Reader Copy I read.) I especially liked the Epilogue which followed up on a number of the men who managed to escape and make their way back to England and told how the lessons learned escaping from Holzminden helped POWs during World War II survive and escape.

This book was given to me specifically for me to review it. That said, I try to be completely honest and transparent in my reviews. This is the best historical book that I have read in the past six months! It tells the story of the Allied escape from Holzminden in the First World War ("the War to end all wars").Neal Bascomb, the author of many books about World Wars I & II (including The Winter Fortress, Hunting Eichmann, The Perfect Mile, Higher, Nazi Hunters, and Red Mutiny) tells the story of the pilots and crews that were kept at Holzminden. The author tells a bit about each of the main characters prior to capture and then goes into great detail about conditions at the camp, how they planned, and executed their great escape. The book is absolutely loaded with period pictures, maps, illustrations, etc.I reviewed the hard back version, and the book itself is well bound and solidly constructed. The book would make a great gift, and it will last for years and years.I loved the conversational tone of the book. It felt like a fire side chat with a beloved uncle who "was there."Whether you are a general historical fan, interested specifically in World War I, or just want to read a great book, I highly recommend this book!

If you enjoy reading about World War II, Neal Bascomb is your author. I've read several of his books, including the one that inspired this young adult book, The Escape Artists: A Band of Daredevil Pilots and the Greatest Prison Break of the Great War.I like this trend of authors rewriting their adult books for the YA or middle-grade market. Kids don't get enough chance to read good narrative nonfiction. Neal Bascomb's book is about an escape attempt by Allied pilots from Holzminden, a German POW camp in World War II. For this book, Mr. Bascomb has drilled down to the camp and the escape attempt. In the book for adults, he examined other camps, other escape attempts and other POWs. The going is kind of slow at first here, with long sentences and daunting words (for a young reader), but once the narrative focuses exclusively on the digging of the tunnel and the escape, it moves along swiftly.I compared two passages from the adult book and the YA book, to show you the difference in the author's voice for the separate audiences. In this paragraph, he's describing what would motivate POWs to continue the escape effort, despite its seeming impossibility. The writing isn't all that different, I think because Mr. Bascomb is just as fluid a writer in the adult market. From the adult book: "They drew from the shame, unwarranted though it was, of being shot down and captured. The months, years, stolen from their lives. The separation from their squadrons and their families. The narrow escapes, only to be recaptured. The spells in solitary, sometimes at the brink of madness and death. The deprivations of Holzminden. The endless hours of tunneling, the terror of the dark, the fear of collapse, of being buried alive in the bowels of the earth. And Karl Niemeyer. The thought of Niemeyer, of the moment he would realize they had beaten him, was reason enough to continue."From this YA book: "What kept them going? Many things. The shame, unwarranted though it was, of being shot down and captured. Imprisonment -- in one camp after the next -- months, years, stolen from their lives. The separation from their squadrons and their families. The narrow escapes. The recaptures. Solitary confinement, sometimes pushed to the brink of madness and death. Holzminden. Its petty annoyances, its waiting, its drumbeat of theft and deprivation. The endless hours of tunneling, the terror of the dark, the fear of collapse and suffocating in the the bowels of the earth. All the setbacks and the stubborn efforts. And Niemeyer. His venomous harangues, his never-ending abuses. The thought of Niemeyer, of besting him, was reason enough to continue."The only caveat I have is just the level of interest an American teen would have in the subject matter. World War II is ancient history for kids in the current generation. And history that is not U.S.-centered might not have much pull for them. But for adventure-loving readers, these hurdles are easily overcome. The addition of photos, charts, drawings and other graphic matter make this an interesting read for both teens and adults.
