Review

A heartwarming freshman novel from an author poised to be a modern Matt Christopher for an older audience. --Kirkus ReviewsA warm, funny, smart and poignant debut, full of heart and full of hope. I loved the adorably cute relationship that emerges between Sebastian and Emir, I loved the humour, and I loved being reminded what it's like to be a teenager during a long, hot, messy summer, when everything is new and exciting, anything seems possible, and the world is opening out in front of you. I throughly enjoyed it and hope it gets all the accolades and praise it deserves. --SIMON JAMES GREEN, author of Noah Can t EvenInspiring and uplifting, RUNNING WITH LIONS is an absolute gem of a novel. It's an utterly charming crowd-pleaser with nimble writing, exceptionally well-drawn characters and a swoonworthy romance. I freaking love this book. --CALE DIETRICH, author of The Love Interest

I enjoyed this book and especially appreciate how Sebastian, the main character, is not depicted as a perfect specimen of manhood and instead struggles with his own issues around body image and identity. He's constantly concerned with others and rarely has a bad thing to say about anyone, with the exception of one or two of his teammates who show flashes of bigotry. In many ways he makes a great role model for a young reader. His habit of *thinking* about the right thing to say or do, but then not actually saying or doing it, started to bug me, though. It got to where every time Sebastian started with one of his "this is what I should be saying" moments of truth, I could always predict that he'd lose his nerve and plot the safest course rather than do the right thing.Overall, I think that the premise of this book is a little unrealistic. Here we have Emir, who was best friends with Sebastian when they were kids, now joining the high school soccer team and promptly getting treated as an outcast 24x7 -- by everyone, including Sebastian. This really threw me. In regard to the coaches, I found it hard to believe that with a new kid joining the squad that: (a) they wouldn't take a moment at the beginning of the camp session to introduce him and make it clear that he was to be welcomed by everyone, (b) they would allow the team to ignore him during meals to the extent that he always eats alone, (c) they would let him stay in one of the bunks all by himself after his freshman bunkmate suddenly bails and goes home, and (d) they would fail to generally watch out for him, making sure there's no bullying or isolation. As it happens, there's hardly any element of Emir's experience at the camp that doesn't bolster his sense of alienation. Some of the characters even conspire openly to make sure Emir remains separate from the team. This is especially ironic since Coach Patrick is described by Sebastian as being so tolerant and accepting, to the point that it's had an impact on his reputation in the coaching community. It's Emir's isolation that drives the story, and for much of the book there's a mystery of sorts as to why he and Sebastian went from being such close friends, to Emir barely wanting to acknowledge Sebastian's existence. He's hostile to Sebastian in even the most mundane circumstances. Naturally, this keeps the reader wondering what could possibly have caused such a dramatic falling-out, and the explanation that we finally get seems a little weak. It makes Sebastian look pretty bad at the basics of being a friend and (for me) doesn't fully account for the nastiness that Emir displays toward him, and everyone, at every turn. There's a couple of times where Emir's attitude is attributed to shyness, but dude, I don't think shy people have a habit of mumbling disparaging comments under their breath after even the simplest encounter with another person. It gets to the point where Emir begins to come off as someone with a personality disorder. Perhaps the characterization could have been softened to allow him some friendships with the other guys while still maintaining a mysterious distance from Sebastian himself.I was surprised by the amount of cigarette smoking in the story. In fact, if not for the appearance of a cellphone in a couple of scenes I'd have thought the book was set in a much earlier era. Aren't these guys athletes? And is it possible that none of the coaches would be able to smell the smoke on the guys' breath, on their clothes, in their hair, and in their cabins? Are we to conclude that the coaches know but just don't care? (And, real talk, I was truly put off by the nonchalant depiction of one character tossing his cigarette butt into a lake.) There are also instances of drinking and drunkenness, complete with nasty hangovers at breakfast. I know I sound like a goody-goody here, but given the book's audience, the laid-back approach to these things -- by the characters and, by extension, the author -- just struck me as odd.

I’ve got that I’m-so-empty-because-it’s-over feeling... Why, you ask? Because Julian Winters’ RUNNING WITH LIONS is a five-star-plus YA novel that has it all… and yesterday, sitting in my favorite royal blue Adirondack chair out by the pool, I finished. For me, this summer has been crazy—tons of editing and promoting for my own YA books, outdoor concerts in our town’s huge music venue, my four kids coming home from college and law school—but every day I took the time to sit by the pool and read. In RUNNING WITH LIONS, I escaped into Sebastian Hughes’ intense summer at soccer camp, and later into his life as a slightly apprehensive high school senior. I found myself caught up in his devoted friendships, his blossoming love of another boy, and in his fear of the future.Julian Winters understands the teenage soul—the longing, the self-awareness, the challenges, the confusion. He easily pulled me into Sebastian’s world where I met perfectly imperfect teens and positive adult role-models. I also learned more about healthy competitiveness and team-building in sports, than I ever expected. Sebastian’s world became my welcome summer escape.Let RUNNING WITH LIONS be your escape too. Go to a place where teens facing challenges act, at times, with frustrating authenticity, and are likable, but imperfect, as they’re supposed to be. Don’t miss this important and relatable YA novel. It is the best of what YA reading should be.

This was a book I saw recommended by a number of authors that I like. Most of them said they thought it was a cute, sweet story and that is exactly what it was. It was a story about finding yourself, accepting yourself and allowing yourself to be open with another person. One of the unique aspects of this book was that it was a story about queer youth and sports. It is rare to see those two together. To often in our society we think that athletes have to be straight when in reality there is nothing that makes that true. Anyone can be gay, even those who are athletic. I liked that this was a main feature of this book but wasn't something that was harped on over and over again. While this team was idealic it was a fantastic look at what true acceptance can do for someone. I liked that this team was built on accepting everyone no matte what and that was well talked about. I liked seeing these boys be able to be open and true with themselves. The main storyline between Sebastian and Emir was sweet. I liked that they grew slowly in their relationship. It grew naturally. They fell for each other and began trying to figure out how to make things work. It wasn't so much about them being gay or bisexual but about them accepting themselves and being able to open up to one another. So many of the moments between them was sweet.I kept waiting for one of the cliche storylines to throw a wrench in things. Whether that be one not being comfortable being out, one not being okay with calling the other boyfriend, one not being over an ex, or one just wanting a fling. I was really pleased that none of that came up. The issue they had was with accepting themselves and accepting that they could be vulnerable with one another. That was a breath of fresh air for stories like these.I thought the dialogue could have been stronger in this story. Sometimes it felt disjointed and I also think it wasn't used to the extent it could have been. I was a bit confused at times at to the shift in direction of the conversation. I also think they didn't really always talk things about in a full fashion. Some things were resolved but you weren't sure why.The fight they had was a bit confusing for me as well. Emir was upset at Sebastian sticking up for him, giving the impression he didn't want anyone fighting his battles for him. Then later he lets another teammate do just that. I don't know if it was because no one knew about his relationship with Sebastian or if he was upset about it being solely about him. The incident with the teammate felt more broad and I guess easier to handle? I wasn't sure and I think that is when more dialogue could have cleared the air better.I also was confused at the point where Sebastian goes to counseling. He goes after his argument with a teammate but during that argument he never actually did anything. His reaction was fair and understandable. I thought the counseling should have been more about his body issues.I also was only half okay with Mason's character. He was interesting but I felt like he was more of a jerk than not. I think we could have gotten a few more vulnerable scenes with him which would have softened his character. All in all this was a sweet story and I enjoyed it!

I haven’t been able to work through this, but the book seems good. It appears to be well laid out and the exercises/content seems applicable. I wish I had time to work through it as I intended, but this will have to wait a few months.

This book has over 500 pages that cover Web Aps and only about 100 basic information pages on desktop applications. Screen shots were very light and very difficult to see. Web Aps are only available to people who have access to a share point server, SQL server, so that Access can be shared on the net. I do not recommend this book unless you are planning on writing Web Aps.

The "Step by Step" series of Microsoft books is one of my preferred products for Microsoft software releases and has always been a good investment when I migrate to new software versions. I remember days long ago where these Microsoft press books actually were part of your software purchase. Consequently, to gain more than marginal use of various office products, a user has to learn functions on their own or from information resources like this book and on-line tutorials. Microsofts "Help" search tool is of marginal value and is really only helpful for the very basic functions of each office product.I never fail to learn something new from each edition of this series. I find them helpful to learn new capabilities or reinforce information I've known from earlier releases. The organization and instruction in these manuals is much better than attempts by other "basic-use themed" books which provide only an overview at best; I've bought these on occasion and they are adequate for general use. This series provides me the information to know more than the basics. This series isn't all-encompassing, but quite thorough. For me, these books provide great information and instruction up to the intermediate+ level if needed/desired. After 20 years of Microsoft office use, I consider myself to be a competent and near expert user of each aspect of MS Office, but each release presents new capabilities and at times a change or removal of functions. These books have saved me a great deal of time and frustration. They remain part of my office library and are referenced often by both me and my colleagues. Great price point for the level of information. A well-constructed paperback reference book. I'd pay more and rate these as perfect if the book was made with slightly higher-quality paper and color images/pictures (heavy highlighting tends to bleed slightly through paper). However, for this price point, the book is adequate and better than many others in quality (the paper of others is similar to paperback novels/newspapers) and easily survives routine and frequent use/reference. Important text/tips are illustrated in blue/bold as a contrast to the predominant black text on white paper.

Purchased one to many

Easy to use and learn program. Lessons were great. Would recommend to anyone who wants to learn access 2013 program

The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Junger’s most recent book, War (2010), which recounts his experiences with combat troops in war-torn Afghanistan, embodies both his ongoing fascination with life “on the tip of the spear” and his public image as a square-jawed danger-seeker. But it was The Perfect Storm (1997), written while he was a freelance tree-climber with only a notepad and an idea, that put him on the map. The outline is well known because the events made the news, because the book became a best-seller, and because the book became a major motion picture with A-list talent. In October 1991, a freak convergence of weather—a storm from the west, a cold front from the north, and a hurricane from the south—resulted in the Halloween Storm, a once-in-a-century gale that wreaked havoc on the North Atlantic. As befits a story so huge, Junger follows a diverse array of people through it, including fishermen, sailors, and rescue personnel. But it’s the story of the doomed swordfish boat Andrea Gail, whose crew was never found, that is the most compelling, and it is here that Junger shows the strength of his craft. In re-creating what might have happened to the six-man crew, he seamlessly weaves known facts with everything from interviews with survivors of other storms to explanations of fishing-boat architecture and the science behind drowning, with results so unforgettable that we can well imagine their final moments. But the Andrea Gail is not the whole story. There are other sword boats, the beleaguered sloop Satori with its crew of three, and a diverse array of rescuers whose actions are nothing short of heroic. There is a wealth of information here about the practice and business of fishing and about weather, sea, and people, but Junger shapes it all with an almost novelistic sense of pace and timing. Like Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air (1997), about disaster on Mount Everest, it’s a thrilling, sobering, and extremely accessible book that may well serve as the point of entry for readers curious about its subject. Rarely are works of nonfiction so deeply affecting. --Keir Graff

I have been wanting to read this book for years, and after reading all of the glowing reviews for it, I thought it might make for an exciting afternoon off work. I was wrong. This book has a lot of tech-jargon in it and I found that boring. I thought I would love this book because it was the story of a real storm, real lives in jeopardy and the supposedly gripping tale of six men and their journey out to sea to find their individual fortunes. What I found was a book that had some brilliant moments of literary genius, for example, when describing the storm, but unfortunately the rest of the book read like a longer article that would have been submitted to a monthly magazine for men. I didn't feel much for the characters in the book, which is sad since they were real people not fictional creations.I kept hoping while I was reading this book that it would become more exciting and that the human element would come more into focus. I already knew when I started this book that the boat disappeared, i felt that was a given. I wanted to know more about how...when...why things occurred and why the decisions affected those lives happened. I felt this book honestly would have been a great read if I had been looking for a book of technical fact and not a thrilling adventure, but this book did not live up to what the cover promised.

I saw the movie years ago and it was very impactful. My husband and I recently returned from a vacation to Gloucester, MA and it was our first visit since the huge storm in October of 1991. We had spent quite a few vacations in that area in the late 1980s and we stayed in the same place this time that we had way back then. The inn had pictures taken in the aftermath of the storm which just heightened my interest in the storm so I decided to read the book. While the book and the movie differ (from little things like The Crow's Nest doesn't back up to the harbor to large things like the movie's speculation of what went on on-board the Andrea Gail), if you enjoy one of them you will enjoy the other. I watched the movie again shortly after finishing the book just for comparison. For anyone who enjoys non-fiction books about people facing tremendous odds against nature such as climbing the huge mountains such as Everest or through-walking the Appalachian Trial, this would be a good book for you to try. As in most situations like this, each individual decision isn't necessarily bad or wrong, but when taken as a whole the results can be catastrophic. It also gives the reader a better understanding of the lives of the commercial fisherman on the eastern seaboard. While it is often romanticized, it is actually a very hard life with lots of grueling work that contains a lot of danger for both life and limb.I enjoyed the book tremendously and I am sure I will re-read it in the future. Even my husband (who isn't a big reader) found himself fascinated with it.

This is the movie story but it's not the movie story. This is so much more than the film. Sebastian Junger did his research, going back into history about both the fishing industry and the storms of the region, just to provide context to the story of the Halloween storm. He even worked in the area (though not in fishing) for a time in order to be accepted enough by the local people that they would talk with him about fishing, fishermen, and the Andrea Gail. I found it fascinating. And if you think the movie exaggerated things, go read about Ernie Hazard, the Fair Wind, and pitch-poling.

Sebastian Junger’s book A Perfect Storm replays the Andrea Gail’s demise during an epic storm off the East Coast in the early ‘90s. The wonder of his writing stems from his ability to take the readers on their harrowing ride using facts from everything else that happened to other doomed ships and sailors during the same storm. You know from the beginning that the Andrea Gail’s crew does not survive, but he does a terrific report revealing how dangerous life (and, sadly, death) at sea can be.

The Andrea Gail and the events that took place in October of 1991 are brought to bear on the reader by delving into the personal lives of the men who sailed upon her. The reader is thrust into the very essence of an industry that supportes fishing under harsh and sometimes deadly environment."The Perect Storm" details such a time and goes to the very heart of those who were left behind as well as giving us new respect for those lost in the storm tossed waters.True, the book does mix past tense with present and it does take you on a journey, spinning you from time and place while developing the story. However, it presents the facts and gives the reader a chance to understand the life of a sword boat captain and his crew.Junger has given the reader a glimpse into the lives of men who were doing their daily job, yet done in the face of danger. You will come away with a new found appreciation for these men and those that follow suit. I dare say you will not look upon a menu and see swordfish without reflecting upon the printed words with the "The Perfect Storm".It was very thought provoking and the amount of research done shows through in the final work. The errors in grammer and jargon can be overlooked due to its' fast paced style and readability. Take the time to read this book and do not skim over the contents to get to the end.

Amazon.com Review

After what happened to her face, Marina stopped talking. Completely. Even the people at the hospital couldn't help her find her voice again. In an almost hopeless, last-ditch effort, Marina is shuffled to a boarding school--where she's required to keep a journal. Ugh! Slowly, though, the secrets begin to pour from her spirit onto the paper. The more shape she can give to the nightmare, the more she is released from it. This is one of the most intelligent, realistic novels about post-traumatic stress ever written for young people. Marina's transformation will inspire any teen who has ever struggled to find his or her voice.

This review has been crossposted from my blog at The Cosy Dragon.com. Please head there for more in-depth reviews by me, which appear on a timely schedule.Marina has been scarred for life, in her interior and on her exterior. She doesn't talk, at all, any more. She shrinks into walls, and has spent a long time in hospital. There's some really nice insights into the way teenagers feel in this novel. Marina wonders at one point why adults seem so confident. And she asks whether they have lessons after they graduate high school! I kinda wish we adults did get that. But it's all a matter of hard earned experience. After one of the other novels I had read recently, this short look into family life is relatively beautiful. Marina's family is dysfunctional, and there's no remedy for that, but the other families' lives that she peers into are good.I like Marina, and at no point did I feel frustrated by the way she was behaving. I understood that there were things going on that she didn't write about, and at the same time felt ok with that.A boarding school always sounded good to me, because I thought it would be fun. I think that's the fault of Enid Blyton and her 'The Naughtiest Girl in School' series. This boarding school, from Marina's perspective, is both Heaven and Hell. After hating it there, she finds that it is helping her more than she knew.I'd strongly recommend this novel for teenagers. Angsty, but resolute. Tortured, and yet satisfying. I first read it in high school, a little, unoffensive looking book that has so many feelings inside I'm surprised it can stay on the shelf.I didn't know until I was looking for images of this book, that it was his debut novel. I think it's the first novel of his I read, but I could be wrong. The rest of his novels are just as unfinished as this one, with the exception of 'Tomorrow When the War Began'. By unfinished, I don't mean not well written. It's that it is up to the reader to work out what comes next.I went looking for a PDF copy of the half-sequel, 'Take My Word for It', and instead found a fascinating interview/author biography of Marsden. And he has a school! He's the Principal of Candlebark, just north of Melbourne, Victoria. Just as his books promote independence and resilience in children and teens, his school does also.

John Marsden has yet to let me down. His writing is always thoughtful, poignant, realistic and adventurous."So Much to Tell You" is definitely up to par. I've always found it unfair that his writing is considered at the teenage level, so many people in other age brackets can benefit from the perspective his characters experience. The story is one people have heard before; a story of a young girl hurt by her family. However, the way Marsden puts you inside of her head is amazing and unique. It's almost to the point you can't tell if he's an author writing about a girl... or an author who has discovered a notebook lying by the side of the road. This novel is a great exploration of coping with issues, and a highly recommended read for adults as well as teens.

It's a play not book

John Marsden is an award winning international writer of young adult fiction. This is an important piece of writing as the tale connects to young adults, particularly young girls, because the central theme of this work is "fitting in", having experienced a horrific trauma, (which the author never specifies) learns to speak again as her only form of communication is through a diary which she is forced to write in the boarding school she is cruelly placed. The reader does not discover the narrator's name until the end of the tale.We are only permitted to see her past through her pain, the trauma, and it is vague at best. The story wanders, spinning off on many tangents that are irrelevant to the plot. Teenagers, though, do the same thing: talking about their parents, their close calls with the opposite sex and the obligatory rebelliousness which most Middle School girls' experience. So Much to Tell You is about the thoughts, feelings, fears and hopes of a little girl whose face has been terribly disfigured; we do not know how her face has been damaged and through the entire diary, only catch glimpses of the past. The text rambles as a young person does. The text is an effort to connect to young people and, from the classes that I've run on the text with these young people, captures their naive and evolving minds. My only criticism is the major issues in the novel, that is to say, her relationship with her father and mother, as she hates her mother but loves her father though he is in jail; the reason being something connected to her "accident", and her mother disconnecting, opens the door to a task of creative writing for the class.Interestingly, the young women whose task it was to "fill in the blanks" as it were; in other terms answer the questions the novel fails to do, the young women in my class actually seemed to at least, write `better' than Marsden. Why?Because a middle-aged man, no-matter how taletent he is will never write like a 13 year old girl. He did a marvellous job, exceptional in fact, but when I read the actual, he came close but did not hit the mark.So Much to Tell You is a good piece of young adult fiction that captures a 13 or 14 mind of a teenager on the brink of adulthood.Marsden upon request wrote a play based on the novel and high schools across Australia have preformed to a successful outcome. One of the better young adult novels.

This isn't a book that I imagine the sequel of. I imagine sequels to many books but surprisingly enough-this one looks as if you'll feel a little 'empty' after finishing it but it does nothing of the sort. I don't enjoy reading groupings of diary entries but these are as well done as Anne's Frank's diary! They may not have amazing descriptive passages but are simple, painful and very frank. I related to many of the passages that I fell into my own thoughts amoungst it.This book is a short read so it'll be good to read if you are bored. Many won't understand it but those who will know who I'm talking about and 'what' I'm talking about.Surprisingly enough- the book is like a plain diary. No long incidents are described to explain anything and yet when you finish the book everything will seem completely logical.
