Jeremy Ford is a Teacher. He knows the questions before they are asked. This is an excellent book for beginners. I have at least 6 pastel books I ordered on Amazon. They all had great reviews but none have helped me better than Mr. Fords. I loved this book so much I ordered his watercolor book as well

An excellent book on working with Pastels. One can learn much from the teachings of Jeremy Ford by reading this book...and of course, working every day on your own pastel work. You learn by working and keeping at it.The contents tell you what papers to use, blending tools, how to do underpainting using alcohol which is very popular today, what materials to use, tell you about usig color and form, chapters on painting snow, varied elements of the landscape such as doing reflections, trees, waterfalls, creating depth or distance, perspective, blending or not blending,....ways of applying pastel to the surface paper or board, ...... to use fixative or not keeping in mind that it does darken your pastel work...creating light at different times of the day, creating a mood and atmosphere and doing skyscapes, How to compose your work using photographs...... And, how to mount and frame your work as well. The demo photographs are very good too.

Just received this book and have glanced through it. Can't wait to really get into it. It has great ideas and teaches pastel techniques in depth. I've watched Jeremy Ford's video lessons and I'm very impressed with him. Great teacher and he gives inspiration to beginning artists. His work is beautiful and unforgettable.

I like this book. Taught me some interesting techniques that I didn't know before.

Purchased as a gift for my wife after she extended her library loan copy the third time.

Absolutely the best art book I have ever purchased. Step by Step instructions, everything you need to know about pastels, clear and easy to understand and follow, produces nice works of Art. Hope he writes another book soon.

This book has been quit helpful to me, a beginning pastelist of a few months. It gives good information and helpful advice when I do not know what to do next. The illustrations are very good. The pastel words are well defined so they are very understandable. It is a wonderful adjunct to the pastel classes that I am attending.

This book has great step by step instructions for several project,. It contains basic blending and mark making techniques and underpainting instructions.

"Tarkin," like many Star Wars novels, is not a book of one genre. While it's certainly part of a greater space fantasy environment, "Tarkin" has much in common from genres of historical fiction set in the Victorian and Napoleonic eras.James Luceno, who wrote the excellent "Star Wars: Darth Plagueis" shortly before the Lucasfilm canon reset, takes a rather different tone with his villainous protagonist. Wilhuff Tarkin isn't a Sith Lord. He's not the sort of boldly despicable villain that you love to hate. He's not maniacal or all-powerful. He's neither Byronic nor dashing. He doesn't have a complicated inner good person struggling to get out. Tarkin is cold and calculating, and as the novel shifts between the genres of mystery, savage survival, and naval warfare, Tarkin echoes characters of Imperial literature and history like Professor Moriarty, Cecil Rhodes, and Admiral Nelson.Like Moriarty or his rival, Tarkin has strong deductive reasoning skills. A good portion of the novel reads like a Victorian-era Sherlock Holmes mystery, albeit with a ruthless amoral genius at the helm rather than a drug-addicted defender of the meek. Tarkin doesn't make it through the novel without making a few incorrect predictions, but his mind is sharp, and his ability to unravel conspiracy is impressive.Interspersed throughout the mystery are flashbacks to the Tarkin family's brutal rites of passage on the planet Eriadu. Like Cecil Rhodes, most infamous of Victorian colonialists, young Wilhuff adapts to survival in the savage savannahs and jungles of his homeworld. Accordingly, Eriadu's Carrion Plateau could have been the setting of a Star Wars "Heart of Darkness." Eriadu is the Darkest Africa of diamond mines and Boer wars, and like a good Victorian, Tarkin is taught the importance of order and fear. He rises to power treating both the natural and civic aspects of his universe as things to be tamed. Finally, like Lord Horatio Nelson (or the fictional Horatio Hornblower), Tarkin takes on the role of Napoleonic-era naval strategist. Star Wars media more often depicts dogfights between small craft, making quick turns and dodging beams of energy. Though the space battles of this novel are exciting, they primarily focus on larger, slower vessels. So instead of evasive maneuvers, the novel's ships have to predict the path of their bulky opponents, turning and positioning their starboard cannons to hit the enemy's port with a massive broadside. This last element of "Tarkin" is less dominant than the others, but the relevant passages could have come from a C S Forester novel.I quite enjoyed Luceno's "Tarkin." It won't be everyone's cup of tea, as the protagonist is neither particularly likeable nor particularly fascinating. Wilhuff Tarkin's shade of evil is instead a bit too close to home, embracing an ugly imperialism that has shown its face frequently on our own little planet. One final aside for fellow Star Wars enthusiasts: fans of "Darth Plagueis" should be happy to see some small details from this previous work pop up in "Tarkin." It's not particularly explicit, but Luceno references a few characters and plot points from his earlier book as if it had never been extricated from the canon. It's almost as if Del Rey should publish a second edition of "Darth Plagueis," revised to fit the new editorial and canon standards but with at least 75% of the story intact. One can dream.

If viewed as a stand alone Star Wars story this novel is very good. It tells of the adventures of Tarkin and Darth Vader as they travel around in space to stop a band of rebels who stole an Imperial ship. It lacks as a Star Wars novel because much of the book is in space and because it is mostly gray-scale in backdrop. Intertwined in the novel is the story of Tarkin's youth as he is taken on survival training trips on his homeworld. These parts are short and don't utilize a lot of the exotic planets that is common in the Star Wars universe. This Vader/Tarkin adventure takes place entirely before the events of Episode IV. The story takes place in a manner of days and doesn't explore the relationship between Tarkin and Vader as it existed before or after. It mentions Trakin's suspicious of Darth Vader once being Anakin Skywalker but doesn't explore it any more than a mere mention.I read this book after reading the author's previous novel Darth Plagueis. By comparison Tarkin is not as good. Darth Plagueis goes into great details about the histories of Senator Palpatine, his master Darth Plagueis, and his protege Darth Maul. Darth Plagueis has a great tie-in to the Star Wars movies and was very wide in scope and has great character detail. Tarkin by comparison is very narrow in scope and vague in details. Tarkin meets the requirements for Star Wars "canon" where Darth Plagueis is just an extended universe novel. Because of this I felt like Tarkin was restricted from going into many areas that the reader would like to explore. Too much detail about the Death Star construction or about Tarkin's last moments might conflict with the anthology movie Star Wars: Rogue One to be released in 2016. The book is lacking because of this. We do not get a great sense of Tarkin's motives or the actions that were going on in between the scenes during the movies like the destruction of Alderaan or the Battle of Yavin. When I think of Tarkin those are the most infamous moments Star Wars fans know of him and what a book about him should be about.

For transparency, I'm a huge Star Wars fan, I loved a lot of the EU (and thought some of it just plain sucked), I always knew it wasn't cannon like the movies, and so I didn't get butt hurt when Disney made the decision to not follow any of it. That said...This book is part of Disney's and Lucasfilm's "new" Star Wars cannon, and it's not a bad story, but it's not exactly a good one either. The part I enjoyed was the "current" parts, showcasing the older Tarkin, as well as his interaction with Darth Vader. The part that showcased Tarkin in his younger years was boring, and much like Anakin as a little boy, I didn't feel needed to be told. In fact, it just felt like it was there to pad the book out. Another thing I didn't like was Palpatine showing an interest in Tarkin when he was younger. I always hate when they tie things together like that, as it just makes a large galaxy seem so small. Oh, and I hated that they gave Palpatine a first name, and made it the dumbest thing imaginable. When I first read that his name was "Sheev Palpatine", I legit thought to myself, "yeah, I'd turn to the dark side too if I had a name like that".Oh, and I would like to totally thank both Disney and Lucasfilm for the fact that whenever I try to type the word "when" on my phone, it tries to auto correct to "Sheev", as though to taunt me...

I love Star Wars novels and Tarkin does not disappoint at all. It takes the reader through Tarkins life and helps explain how he became one of the most powerful men in the empire under the emperor. I loved the story and the mysterious nature surrounding the events taking place... But what I liked more was how the author used the established characters of the franchise to create an atmosphere of suspicion and intrigue. The novel truly does pull one in and wants you to read more and more.

From the Inside Flap

"FASCINATING . . . MEMORABLE . . . REVEALING . . . PERHAPS THE BEST OF CARL SAGAN'S BOOKS."--The Washington Post Book World (front page review) In Cosmos, the late astronomer Carl Sagan cast his gaze over the magnificent mystery of the Universe and made it accessible to millions of people around the world. Now in this stunning sequel, Carl Sagan completes his revolutionary journey through space and time. Future generations will look back on our epoch as the time when the human race finally broke into a radically new frontier--space. In Pale Blue Dot Sagan traces the spellbinding history of our launch into the cosmos and assesses the future that looms before us as we move out into our own solar system and on to distant galaxies beyond. The exploration and eventual settlement of other worlds is neither a fantasy nor luxury, insists Sagan, but rather a necessary condition for the survival of the human race. "TAKES READERS FAR BEYOND Cosmos . . . Sagan sees humanity's future in the stars."--Chicago Tribune

Pale Blue Dot is a non-fiction and is Sagan’s analysis of the role space will play in humanity’s future. It was written in 1994, and therefore one of his last publications, as Sagan tragically died in 1996. The title of the book, Pale Blue Dot, was taken from the instantly infamous Pale Blue Dot photograph taken by Voyager 1 in 1990. In his book, Sagan created a short analysis of the importance of the human exploration of space. His reasons range from spin-off technology to the intrinsic value of exploration and discovery. But what struck me the most about Sagan’s book was that although he talked extensively about these as, in general, good reasons to explore space, they weren’t the best reason. Or rather, they weren’t enough. Sagan goes on to argue that the single greatest reason to explore space is the survival of the species. Something as an individual I haven't ever really thought of. It is possible that we could destroy ourselves through nuclear war, yes, but that’s not the survival Sagan is talking about. He’s speaking about asteroids. There is a chance that at some point in the future a rock big enough to destroy human life will collide with Earth. Exploring space and developing new technologies is the only way to search out and redirect incoming asteroids. If incoming asteroids cannot be redirected it is important to the species that we have settled elsewhere. Really great book, highly recommend it.

I was hoping for the entire audiobook to be narrated by Sagan but only the first few chapters are narrated by him. His wife narrates the rest. It's puzzling considering he had read his entire book in 1994 and it was made available at some point (almost the entire book can be found on youtube broken up by chapter unlike the CD set I purchased). It would've made more sense to have Ann Druyan read an introduction or include additional CDs of her readings while leaving his originals intact. My quest to find Chapter 22 narrated by Sagan continues...

Made me feel insignificant and have an existential crisis.Love it though

Apparently I buy books while drunk, and then receive them and wonder when I thought I had time to read. Plus, I have a Kindle. But, how can you go wrong with Sagan? Love HIM Lots!

My favourite all time read, lost my old one so I had to buy another one. Great quality, absolutely love. <3 If anyone has never read this book or is debating on doing so, you will not be disappointed in our Carl Sagan! I'm ecstatic to be able to reread this!

My favorite book. Combines planetary science with a beautiful goal for humanity in the near future. Scattered with elegant and poetic passages.

The learning and science encompassed by this book are truly awesome -- but the humanity is greater. Writing some years ago he speaks to the moment... reminding those inflated with their sense of power that the earth they seek to control is but a small blue dot, disappearing in a sea of blackness. Precious and fragile.

Honestly, everyone should read this book. I have owned mine for a long time and keep going back to it. It's now 2018 and it's more relevant than ever. A brilliant mind and teacher, Sagan's writing is eloquent, thought provoking and poetic. I soooo wish he was still here to assist us with our understanding of the future.

turtles mating. Grrr. I would never want to send this to anyone!!! My favorites are:anemonered velvet fisheel in orange coralscuba divers in Sharm El SheikhThe rest are above average with clear colors but not worthy of keeping in my private collection. Photos include sharks/dolphin/ray/another turtle. Three of each design (3X15 = 45 cards). Oversized so requires first class postage.

This is an excellent effort. All photo's are printed from a film based system. If you are an underwater photographer this effort will likely inspire you.

This book contains exceptionally beautiful underwater photographs. Most images are in colour, but there are also some remarkable black white shots, taken by the photographer at different locations throughout the world. The photographer presents the reader with images that are rare and unforgettable. Congratulations to the author David Doubilet for sharing with the world such an exceptional work of art.

An excellent gift as a photographer giving it to someone who doesn't have any art. Excellent for anyone who enjoys the ocean.

Love David Doubilet but this is not one of his best. Most of the photographs are dark and moody. Bought it used so not much money but still disappointing.

You'll feel a profound sense of wonder as you wander the depths of these pages. There is joy, and there is sadness. The world is an amazing place, and this life's work capturing part of it on film will transport you up and out of yourself. Wafting through the views is like taking a vacation. You will come back changed.

GREAT CLASSIC

This work of art provides a breathtaking glimpse into an underwater world that few of us ever have the opportunity or the privilege to visit. Doubilet is undoubtedly one of the finest underwater photographers ever. More important than his skill, though, is thelove and respect for the sea and her creatures that shines through each of these breathtaking film moments.

It is a fascinating account of an ordinary foot soldiers life in the army of Napoleon. A rather brutal life at that. Certainly there was nothing romantic about it. I had always believed that most of the casualties that the Grand Army of the French Empire suffered were on the retreat from Moscow. However the attrition rate on the march to Moscow was astounding also. It was a very badly planned campaign with the lack of food causing so many poor soldiers to die. As one who was an ordinary conscripted soldier myself once upon a time I was quiet upset at reading about the way these men were treated. It brings home the horrors of war in all its starkness, and how unimportant the ordinary soldier was in the eyes of the generals and 'Powers that be'. Cannon fodder is a mild description. I hope more diaries like this are discovered and published.

Mine came from my seller with a slightly noticeable crease on the cover-protector, and more marks in it than I expected, but it was definitely in the advertised condition. Nice, easy to read, little if any damage to the pages, no funny smells, and most of all - the reading was excellent.

A fascinating period that Americans may no little about told by a young soldier in Napoleon's army as he trudges towards Moscow in the dead of winter. Remarkedly he never loses his hope or trust in God. Nor does he question his superiors as soldiers might today.

This is what it is. Not profound or hugely insightful, but if you are interested in these wars, or reading natural accounts or letters of times past, this was a quick read full of pathos but not bathos, and a reminder of just how lucky we have it. His description of trying to get over the last bridge, among a sea of people and cannon fire, taking 4 hours, is amazing. He was a lucky man, and it is clear he knew it.

Napoleonic campaigns and especially Napoleonic campaign in Russia is something that interests me a great deal for many reasons and I am always eager to read eyewitness' accounts. I was so happy when I found this book, I wanted to hear how soldiers coped through, not just read something from generals and officers' point of view. This book provides such perspective and as another reviewer noted it is surprisingly well written.

I am so glad I was not there and did not share his experiences. I read it twice. The parts where he describes how they "foraged" AKA stole from the population is interesting and what a bad time it was to be a small farmer. He describes the retreat from Russia too . . . . I probably would have died.

Excellent account of the invasion of Moscow - one of the most readable and interesting ones I've found. Perhaps that's because it was written by a common soldier not long after the war. Informative introduction, too.

a great look into the past.

This is another one of her books, and it is nicely written, easy to read and follow. It goes on to talk about the many different "levels" of creation, but I don't like how some of the terms used in the book are describing things. Like for example, one of the levels is the lower level , where gnomes, faeries, and trolls live, and I didn't like how she called it lower than us, it would just be a different dimension or plane of existence. Anyways, it is a good book.

Most of us probably won't be able to verify if Sylvia Browne's cosmology is correct until we leave our bodies permanently. The research of near-death experiences by physicians Raymond Moody, Melvin Morse (of children) and Elisabeth Kubler Ross provide evidence of survival of the consciousness after clinical death of the body. (The alternate hypothesis that the oxygen-deprived brain provides stimulation does not explain how medically untrained adults and even children can describe in detail resuscitation procedure, even to the point of repeating what specific individuals at the scene said.) However, one could say that the people who come back to their bodies and the Earth with these fascinating stories of what they saw and learned are merely tourists. The descriptions of life after life from Browne and psychic mediums George Anderson, James Van Praagh, Allison DuBois, John Edwards, and others focus on what we can call permanent residents. And the recent book by Depak Chopra, Life After Death: Burden of Proof, provides another physician's view of the non-temporal and the eternal with an Eastern perspective that is complex, but intriguing. There is a growing body of evidence that indicates that all these writings should be studied carefully. I highly recommend all of Browne's books for being accessible. They make a good introduction to the more arcane Chopra.

I enjoyed reading about different realms and beings from these realms. It's more geared towards spiritual practitioners and metaphysicians. It might be a bit too 'out there' if you are new to spirituality. You might want to start with something more simple like 'The Other Side and Back' by the same author.

Sylvia just keeps them coming and after each book I am hungry for more! She has a way of explaining life in a way that connects with my soul, it all just feels so right. This book was a one that I have to read again to get everything out of it but I relish reading it again and again. Sylvias books are NEVER a disappointment! All of her books have filled some kind of void inside me and keep me coming back for more!

I WAS SKEPTICAL ON ANYTHING CONCERNING THE PARANORMAL AND IAM NOT EASILY PERSUADED. WITH THAT SAID I HAVE PURCHASED 3 OF SYLVIA'S BOOKS AND IAM HOOKED.I LOVE THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT GIVES A VERY GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF LIFE AND WHY WE STRUGGLE WITH CERTAIN ELEMENTS IN OUR JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE.IT DOES NOT HURT TO OPEN YOUR MIND TO THINGS THAT MAY SEEM UNREAL.I HAVE LEARNED FROM THIS BOOK AND HER OTHER BOOKS HOW TO COPE WITH DIFFICULT SITUATIONS BETTER.LIKE SYLVIA SAYS IF WE ONLY HAVE GOOD TIMES WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM THAT AND HOW DO WE ADVANCE SPIRITUALLY IF WE DONT HAVE HARD TIMES SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.OF COURSE WE HAVE SKEPTICS AND THATS FINE TO BE SKEPTICAL BUT BEING CYNICAL IS SOMETHING ENTIRELY DIFFERENT.SKEPTICISM SHOULD NEVER TURN INTO HATE BECAUSE YOU ARE IGNORANT TO OR DONT UNDERSTAND THE BELIEFS OF OTHER PEOPLE AND THATS SOMETHING WE AS PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN. SYLVIA NEVER TRIES TO FORCE ANYONE TO BELIEVE WHAT SHE SAYS. SHE SIMPLY SAYS LET THIS LEAD YOU TO YOUR OWN TRUTH. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK !

This book has a lot of sense about as well as the other books written by Sylvia Browne.Good read.

I recommend all of Sylvia Browne’s book. But this one if you’ve had questions about Creation, heaven and hell that the King James Bible just leaves me with lots of questions

I love Sylvia's books. There are a lot of interesting facts that I've tried to find out more details. I was recommended this book to people who looking answers on their questions.
