The American Heritage History Of The 1920s & 1930's is a great book that I recommend for anyone desiring a detailed history of the era. Plenty of pictures, news articles, 13 short biographies, excerpts from radio broadcasts and mentions of previous eras.HOWEVER, I must criticize the Amazon site's reviews. In many instances, the reviews are of books and movies that DON'T MATCH the product being offered. This is confusing and not at all helpful in getting an idea of the product.

This dictionary is okay in itself, but the print is TINY! I suppose that was a trade-off to get the volume small in size, but I find I have to take it to a very bright light in order to be able to read it. If you have vision problems, I would not recommend this particular dictionary.

I work in an academic library. I noticed an English instructor purchased 30 books for her students to check out. While processing this book I noticed what a great dictionary this is and bought one for myself for home. It packs a lot of information in a small book. Even has pictures which you don't usually find in small handbook dictionaries.

It's inexpensive. Physically it's light, small. Perfect for throwing down in a backpack. People with poor vision will want to go for something larger, but most of the market for this size of a dictionary is probably college students, and they typically won't mind having smaller text size-small price for not having to lug around another massive book.Content wise I'm sure it's missing a lot of words, you can only cram so much in a book this size. That hasn't really come up for me, but if you can't find a word you can do a web search or go grab a bigger dictionary. The main point of something like this is it can always be right there with you-Phones die, some classes and libraries frown on them or you don't get service-Other dictionaries are just too big and you don't want to keep it with you.As far as definitions go, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the American Heritage Dictionary. So many times when a question arises about usage of words and we pull out a dictionary to discuss, my usage is not properly covered. Then I go to the AHD, and sure enough, they've got my back! I don't know if it is a regional thing (I'm from the midwest-live in chicago, a lot of Iowans in my family), if other areas of the country/world don't accept the way we use words here, or just an oversight, but the AHD is the only choice for a dictionary for me!You're either going to love it or hate it.If this is going to be your only dictionary to have around the house, won't have to travel with it, has to be all-inclusive/easy to read-THIS IS NOT THE DICTIONARY FOR YOU. Get something bigger.If you need something ultra light and portable that you can keep with you as the first place to go, this is a fantastic choice.

What can you say about a dictionary. They are not all created equal. I like this one and use it as my primary dictionary because of all the interesting information about the word that is included. I have a paper version and an ipad app. I just the app and enjoy the audio pronunciation. Searching for words is easy with the app.Bottom liine is that of all the dictionaries out there I prefer this one for clarity, depth if infomration, synonyms, antonyms and number of words covered.

When this first arrived, I thought it would be awkward to use because of its weight and overall size. It is not. I placed it on an end table next to my reading chair, rather than on the floor next to me. It's a beautiful dictionary, and I don't have to use a magnifying glass in order to read it. That makes it better than my Webster's dictionary.

Perfectly portable dictionary. I've always been a fan of the American Heritage Dictionary and this one doesn't disappoint. Yes, the font is a bit too small, but the information you need is there. It's not like it's a novel you have to read in it's entirety. You look up a word and that's it.

This is extensive and I would recommend it to anyone who is wanting a dictionary or an updated version of one. It is one of the better one's out there if not the best. I got the paperback because I need to transport it form place to place. If I could leave it on a desk top I would buy the hardback. It just seems so official. My cover was a bit bent in the corner when I received it but not bad enough to warrant an exchange.

I am very interested in this subject. I'd been avoiding products that clearly contain aluminum... but for the average consumer who is not a chemist it is hard to discern the truth from the marketing about products. I was using a deodorant that I thought was safe from aluminum and now I am not sure plus it also has TEA in it (and not the kind of Tea you drink). Chemicals are everywhere! We need more education for the average consumer. So far enjoying Dr. Dennis N. Crouse's book but a lot of it is over my head. Still greatly appreciate the connections he is revealing and also appreciate that he recommends products to help. There is little benefit to gain from reading books that only reveal the problems without any offer of solutions to help. Personally, I lean more toward lifestyle, food and herbs for medicine but I do believe there is a time and place for limited use of supplements and pharmaceuticals as well. We are exposed to so many chemicals today. Some careful mild detox is needful for most of us. Ideal if you have an Integrative or functional MD or DO health care practitioner who is experienced with how to detox toxins and heavy metals. Just make sure your daily elimination is great (2-3 times per day!), stay well hydrated and sweat some to help toxins depart the body on a daily basis and especially if and when you do a formal protocol. Detox with care as you do not want toxins to be pulled out and circulating through out your body. Any detox plan must have provision to completely remove toxins from the body slowly and gently as to not overwhelm the bodies daily work. The Bible teaches is Psalm 139:14 we are fearfully and wonderfully made. I hope God gives us all wisdom about what to do, eat and products to use to support our physical health. None of us are to last here forever so I believe our spiritual health should really be our first priority. I also believe our physical health is to enjoy, elevate unnecessary suffering and to promote our true mission.

This book has been very helpful for me. It has taught me how to reduce my aluminum exposure, how to remove aluminum from my brain and body and how to ameliorate some of the damage that aluminum has caused. I have been diagnosed with over 30 conditions, including five neurological disorders, I have reversed about 10 conditions with mercury chelation but my memory was not getting any better. I am very early into the aluminum removal process but I do feel a bit clearer intellectually since starting the aluminum reduction and removal. I hope to see some good results in the next few months. I highly recommend this book.

All the recommendations the author gives about supplements and life style changes are backed by solid research.I can’t believe the amount of aluminum are bodies are exposed to on a daily basis. Once you read this book you will be reading food and pharmaceutical labels, throwing things out, filtering your water and buying supplements! Get ready to throw out your aluminum cookware and make your own baking powder! I found the fiber pills I was taking on a daily basis contained aluminum, YIKES! After reading this book you will understand why even small amounts of aluminum are something we all need to be concerned about.The table of contents is very detailed which means you can use this book as you would a reference book.The rates of Alzheimer’s and autism are skyrocketing! I saw the rise in Autism first hand as I worked in the public schools as a psychologist for 30 years. During my first year, the elementary school I worked in had one autistic child. The year I retired about 5 % of the children in the regular classrooms were on the autism spectrum. I also saw an increase in broken bones during my career. I remember asking the nurse why she thought the increase was happening. After reading this book I now know why. Aluminum interferes with the production of Vitamin D which is vital in bone development.

In the case of barbell transformations, the worst case is guaranteed (leave 80% or so of your money in reserves). And model error is much, much milder under Kelly criterion. So, assuming one has the edge (as a sole central piece of information), engage in a dynamic strategy of variable betting, getting more conservative after losses ("cut your losses") and more aggressive "with the house's money". The entire focus is the avoidance of gambler's ruin.The first strategy was only embraced by academic financial economists --empty suits without skin in the game -- because you can make an academic career writing BS papers with method 1 much better than with method 2. On the other hand EVERY SURVIVING speculator uses explicitly or implicitly method 2 (evidence: Ray Dalio, Paul Tudor Jones, Renaissance, even Goldman Sachs!) For the first method, think of LTCM and the banking failure.Let me repeat. Method 2 is much, much, much more scientific in the true sense of the word, that is rigorous and applicable. Ed Thorp, Leonard Maclean, and William Ziemba wrote a masterpiece here. For me, this is a very important textbook because it captures the importance of position size. What many people in the financial world fail to recognize is the tethered relationship that exists between probability expectations and position size. This book doesn't just show the calculations for the Kelly criterion, but it also provides methods for trying to develop a good expected value for certain types of events and outcomes. If you're a serious investor, you would be crazy to pass on this book. For one reason, Ed Thorp is the living example of why the Efficient Market Hypothesis is false - simply look at his 227 months out of 230 for beating the market and you'll see what I'm talking about... Thank you for sharing this information gentleman!

You have an edge on average, and the odds are tilted in your favor. You size your bets as a ratio of edge over odds. If your edge is durable, and the odds are calculated right, the optimal decision leads to the best compound growth of capital on average.Samuelson sits in his ivory tower, where only efficient markets exist. Those of us that are practitioners know that the markets are hard, but not efficient.To me, the Kelly Criterion is intuitive, whereas the ideas of Modern Portfolio Theory are a stretch. Parents, please read this book before you have a child. It spells out the very real risks and benefits on all of the available vaccines. Nearly all are not worth the possible complications. Lifetime immunity from a shot is a myth. Vaccines come with a whole host of problems from unwanted virus present in vaccines, toxic amounts of chemicals used to make the vaccines, and auto-immune reactions in the brain leading to a whole host of chronic problems. I would put my faith in fostering health as the greatest thing anyone can do to avoid illness and stop the nonsense of injecting toxins into the body. I believe the human body is much more capable than we give it credit for.

Good information but not as comprehensive as I would have liked. It doesn't cover the HIB or PC vaccines, two other childhood vaccinations now on "the schedule". I'd love for that to be added in.

Good book, but was looking more for a book with the pros and cons. Liked the Dr. Sears book on vaccines much better. This covers a little more internationally requirements than the Sears book, if you want to know what some of the other countries are doing on this topic.

Everyone should be well informed on BOTH sides of this issue. Unfortunately, if one ONLY listens to mainstream medicine, they're just getting a part of the story.

Was a little tough for me to read, just because of the nature of the content being somewhat detailed & trying to hold and weigh things that are new to me was challenging. The information was great though, and this became one of the trusted sources we used to make informed decisions regarding vaccines for our child.

This review strictly pertains to the Kindle version. I was looking forward to learning from this book. However, the formatting is so bad in the Kindle version it's almost unreadable. Everything just sort of runs together with very poor use of spacing. I would not recommend the Kindle version.

I’ve read plenty of technical code books and “Beginning DAX with Power BI” ranks as one of the best. To often, giant books with multiple authors are dry and a challenge to stay awake to, let alone get excited about. Phil’s approach in this book is refreshing and engaging. His style and use of many different practical examples keeps the reader engaged and wanting to move on to the next section. I particularly enjoyed the small author notes dropped in after some of the examples that warn of common mistakes or provide a tidbit of extra value based on Phil’s many years of experience. Those types of little additions add a lot of value for beginners. In addition, the chapters on “Context” and “Debugging and Optimization” were great to see as those are key elements for all users to understand and pay attention to.This book teaches DAX in an approachable and well written way that leads the user to join along and work through the examples. DAX is certainly a language best learned while doing, rather than memorizing, and this book does a great job of supporting that method. I will certainly be recommending this book to all new users that want a great jump start and solid base in DAX. It will certainly help in expanding their capabilities and drive them towards producing better insights in their reporting efforts in Power BI.

Please be aware, that this review is a copy of my review on the german amazon website. Unfortunately this review does not show up here, but this book deserves better.This is the first book I read about DAX (and I have read a lot) that provides a concise and first of all an easy to read introduction into the mysterious FILTER CONTEXT. It also covers the latest development of DAX by comparing different functions that have surfaced over time and are doing more or less all the same, summarizing a table, but Phil explains their own twists. Phil provides great examples when to use which of the summarizing functions like SUMMARIZE, SUMMARIZECOLUMNS, or GROUPBY.Another great chapter is about JOINS, emphasizing the importance of relationships.Personally I consider myself an expert in the field of DAX, but I found some new ideas and approaches reading this book.This will be the recommendation in all my DAX trainings.It was a fun read!

This is the best guide to DAX that I have seen in the market. It is more comprehensive and up-to-date than anything I have seen thus far. The organization of the topics are logical and spot-on. When I give presentations that introduce DAX, it is exactly the order that I follow. It is a joy to see someone give Context an entire chapter in a book as I feel it is the key topic that one needs to understand when learning DAX and something that sets DAX apart from other languages. There is a great chapter on Dates but the highlights for me were the Debugging and Optimizing DAX chapter and the Practical DAX chapter. Great information in those chapters. And, the treatment/explanation and examples of the GENERATE function is first rate. I've never understood how to use that function efficiently until now. Overall, Phil seems to have been able to strike a great balance between a book that covers all of the fundamentals but is also written very much for the practical DAX user. There are so many nuggets of wisdom presented in this book I can already see that it is going to be my go to reference when I get stuck. Now if only Phil could replicate this book for Power Query (M) code I'd have every reference book I'd ever need for Power BI!

For anyone learning Power BI, regardless of background, one of the most challenging aspects is the DAX language.Beginning DAX with Power BI is an excellent resource for all Power BI users, whether complete beginners or more advanced.Phil Seamark presents DAX in all its glory, from basic definitions and examples to some quite advanced applications. The examples provided clearly reflect a wealth of experience as a Power BI practitioner, and will be relevant to a wide range of Power BI users.The core concepts are covered excellently, including the data model, context and filtering. There are some great examples of table functions and emphasis on the power of DAX as a query language.I was also pleased to see coverage of such practical topics as debugging & optimizing, code formatting and variables!While I consider myself reasonably experienced with DAX, I gleaned a number of useful techniques from this book, and found myself repeatedly saying "aha" as I read through. I will be referring to this book for years to come!

If you are looking for a book which will help you not only learn DAX but also make it go faster, this is the book you want to read. Phil has a number of examples where he shows the DAX code and the equivalent SQL code, which is very helpful for those who know SQL and want to see how to do something they know how to do in SQL in DAX. Phil starts out with the basics, then builds upon the concepts starting with variables, moving to filtering concepts then to tuning and creating test data sets. The only complaint I has is that this book as "Beginning" in the title which may keep some people from learning some of the great topics Phil covers here that are not available other places. You know from the first few pages that this is going to be a good book as one of the inventors of DAX was the technical reviewer, so do yourself a favor and pick this book up.

This is a nice book. Delivery was right on time.

I bought this book after much searching for it in local bookshops. This volume, when it arrived, was beautiful to look at. Bound in a classic and impressive cover, it has 2 photos of Thoreau for fans of his works (such as me). But, it is his words which give one pause. Which make the idea of living in the woods, completely self-sufficiently, not as far-fetched as it may first seem. I enjoy this book each time i read it. It's a classic, full of great quotes for those who ruminate on the nature of man, and the beauty of living simply.

A true masterpiece that will make you rethink your life. Thoreau was a genius.

I needed this book to write a research paper on, and as I'm sure everybody knows, there are so many editions of this great American literary work. After looking around on Amazon, I opted for this edition. I liked the look of the cover and was glad that it came with "On the Duty of Civil Disobedience." I was even willing to pay the slightly higher price for this edition than that of any other on Amazon.However, about two weeks after I submitted my purchase and paid, I received something I did not order. To be sure, it WAS Walden - it even included "Civil Disobedience" - but the cover was not the same as advertised. My name and shipping address appeared on the receipt, but it said the order was placed by a different individual who will remain nameless. Also, the order number on the receipt did not jive with the one I got in the email. I contacted the seller of this edition I ordered, and within five minutes had a reply asking for my shipping address to check if there was a mix-up. I replied, and it's been two weeks - I have not heard back.I'm giving the review three stars because my beef is not with the book itself. The book is awesome, filled with great wisdom. I'll quote from the book itself "While civilization has been improving our houses, it has not equally improved the men who are to inhabit them." Applied to my current situation, amen to Mr. Thoreau.

This collection has Henry David Thoreau's two most famous works: Walden and "Civil Disobedience." Both are immortal literary works that should be read by all; anyone who does not have them would do well to get them here.Walden is one of the great classics of American letters. It has been somewhat unfortunately tainted by its reputation as the "treehugger's Bible," but this misses the point. Thoreau obviously loved nature and was one of the nation's first environmentalists - indeed, modern day environmentalism can be traced directly to him -, but the core of the book is not a simple stating of nature's virtues. Thoreau lays down nothing less than a philosophy of life. Like "Civil Disobedience," Walden preaches the virtues of individual liberty and the importance of Man over State. Thoreau raises some staggeringly deep existential questions: If a man does not depend on the State but still resides within its boundaries, need he pledge allegiance? Need he pay taxes? Thoreau tells us how to get the most out of life by living simply. Indeed, much like Rousseau, he seemed to basically believe that the true essence and spirit of man resides in the state of nature. He assures us that, if all lived as simply as he did at Walden, there would be very little theft, crime, violence, envy, or jealousy. He urges us all to live our own lives as we see fit, neither depending on or heeding others, and to avoid merely becoming another mindless drone in conformist society."Resistance to Civil Government" - or "Civil Disobedience," as it became known - is an essential part of American literature, culture, and history. Even more remarkably, it is undeniable proof that great literature can have a real effect on the world even long after it is written and ignored. The essay is world famous as the founding text of civil disobedience, i.e., non-violent protest, and its effect on such luminaries as Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King was profound, thus sealing its immortality. This alone makes it essential for all.However, it is easy to forget that the essay is a masterpiece in itself. Essentially Thoreau's highly individual expression of his mentor Emerson's self-reliance doctrine applied to government, it has a wealth of depth and nuance despite its brevity. The words are few but the implications endless; it has enough food for proverbial thought to last a lifetime. The gist is very clear, but the implications have spoken very differently to many different people. The work's nature - and Thoreau's generally - is such that it and he are championed by everyone from neocons to libertarians to liberals, and the truly notable thing is that all are justified. This underscores the importance of reading the essay for ourselves.Its main query is "What does the individual owe the state?," the answer being a resounding "Nothing." Thoreau takes the maxim that the government that governs least governs best to its logical conclusion by wishing for one that governs not at all - a brave wish very few have seriously dared to make or even conceive. He makes a highly principled stand for individual rights and autonomy, arguing very persuasively that people should be able to go about their business without interference. This of course sounds very much like current libertarians, and their position has indeed hardly ever been better argued. Many related and implied issues - protests against taxation, conscription, etc. - also seem to support them. However, it is important to remember that the essay's crux and most famous section - Thoreau's account of a night spent in jail for refusing to pay a poll tax because he did not want to support war or slavery - was and is immensely liberal. Few issues can be more central to current liberalism than an anti-war stance, and slavery was the era's great liberal cause. All this must be kept firmly in mind amid the many attempts to reduce Thoreau to a current party platform. He was at once too simple and too complex for this and would not have suffered himself to be thus reduced; nor does the essay justify it.Integral as all this is, the work's core point is arguably a new self-reliance argument above and beyond immediate practical considerations. Thoreau certainly had a practical, political streak, especially compared to relative idealists like Emerson, but he thought individuality more sacred than anything. He articulated this more fully elsewhere, but it is very present here. His work is thus in many ways the best kind of self-help material - and, unlike the mass of current self-help tripe littering bookshelves, is intellectually and even aesthetically pleasing. Thoreau was the most thoroughly local writer that can be imagined, but his willingness to look deep inside himself for the eternal truths present in all people has made him an inspiration to millions and millions of people from across the political spectrum and indeed the world. This essay is a major part of his legacy and thus one of the very few works that literally everyone should read. Few can be the same afterward, and it will change many lives; it is nothing less than one of the most important documents ever written, and its value simply cannot be exaggerated.This collection is an excellent primer for those new to Thoreau, and those who have not already done so should open their minds to him immediately - and once done, they will never be closed again.
