He was a true educator, The stories of his efforts to teach both academic and spiritual skills to the students at the first schools he founded is heartening. This is a good history of the Baha'i Faith in twentieth Century.

.....the author really brings out the warmth and love-for-the-simple that this star-servant of humanity, Faizi, realized and developed within himself with the help of so many others who came before him...............simply love reading these stories and reminding me of what really develops communities..............i totally recommend this book.............the transformation of this man brought out by the author is well-done............."may deeds, not words, be your adorning..."

This is a very inspirational and spiritual book about a man with a big heart and love for everyone he met and everyone he met loved him. I have started the book again, as soon as I finished it. I highly recommend it to anyone who is striving to be a better person and who cares for mankind.

Anyone interested in the history and worldwide growth of the Baha'i Faith, anyone wishing to understand what it means to be a Hand of the Cause of God, will appreciate this loving biography by the daughter of A.Q. Faizi and will be drawn into the embrace of an extraordinary friend and teacher.

As one who was fortunate o spend many precious hours with the this much-loved angel, I can say the book truly reflects the burnish of his spirit.

This inspirational story of an inspirational human being is very readable. Faizi is the story of a 20th century disciple who walked a spiritual path with humility, love, courage, fortitude, steadfastness and humour. The way in which Faizi nurtured the souls of all who crossed his path is written with sincerity and appreciation. This is a 'must read' for every Baha'i and for anyone who wants their faith in humanity restored.

Unbelievable work and dedication of one man towards his faith and perseverance. An example of love and humility. Highly recommend this book.

This book contains a lot of information about the life of St. Patrick and St. Patrick's Day. I purchased it for use in my 2nd grade classroom in a public school. It wasn't as appropriate for this situation as I had hoped. Several pages of the book go into the religious aspect of St. Patrick's life. I found I had to skip over some sentences in order to be politely correct in my classroom. My students enjoyed the book, and we were able to create an anchor chart with the main details of the text. Gail Gibbons is a wonderful author and illustrator...so this is main reason I had purchased this book for use in my classroom without previously seeing the details.

This is a cute book but I was under the impression there would be more to read. It has about 1-3 sentences per page which is WAY below my child's reading level. It is informative but not to the extent where history is given in nice detail. It's more like 'bullet points'. I again will stress it's cute but just not was was advertised and not what I read in other reviews.

Oh this is just the cutest book to help you child learn more about St Patricks Day! The art is well done and I like that it covers the history and new traditions and the biblical meaning behind the clover. This has become a favorite book even weeks after the holiday! My son is 5 and loved it and had many questions it was super cute and really helped him learn visually about the holiday.

Cute book. Gibbons always delivers when it comes to informational text that is usable with young readers/learners. Every student who heard this book liked it, and it's a great way to introduce this author to the kids. I twinned this with the DePaolo book that was historical fiction and found the kids loved both and got different information from each.

This is not a story - its a lot of info on St. Patrick's Day. This was the only book I found that talked about who St. Patrick was and his life. That is the main reason we got this book.

Cute little book about Saint Patrick and the traditions of the holiday. Nice illustrations!

We bought these as gifts for my nieces and nephews and one for my six year old daughter. It explains the history in a kid friendly way with kidlike pictures

While I can sing multiple praises for the Kingfountain series in general, I have many more for The Silent Shield itself. Thank the ever-loving heavens I was able to read this back-to-back with The Hollow Crown. Seriously.The Silent Shield picks up almost a year after the initial battle with Gahalatine's forces - the brief respite granted by the foreign King when he suspected treachery at play. During that time, Treynne has grown into a strong young woman in her role as both Oath Maiden and the Lady of Averanche. Both Fallon and Elwis have grown into strong and competent men, lords of their own respective holds.Wheeler wastes no time in getting things moving. Owen Kiskaddon is still missing. By 20%, King Drew has another major player removed from his arsenal, further crippling his council. By 30%, Trynne's entire family has been upended. By 40%, Galahatine has launched the first major battle against four of King Drew's major fortresses (at once) and all but one is lost.The rest of the book is a whirlwind of cat and mouse between King Drew's people and King Gahalatine's...all leading up to the final battle at Dundrennan. The threads of fate all start weaving together to show the final stage where we are left breathless and awestruck.I can't wait for The Forsaken Throne but I really don't know how it will top this. I honestly believe The Silent Shield is Wheeler's best work yet.Recommended for ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE...ESPECIALLY those that love a well-developed read full of magic, suspense, and intrigue. Entertaining read. Great continuation to The Kingfountain Series.SHORT SUMMARY (SPOILER ALERT) : This takes place about a year after the last book still following a character named Trynne. Trynne's father is still missing but still alive and her mother must also leave to the Deep Fathoms. Trynne's first mission in the book is to go to the Chandleer Oasis to retrieve King Sunilik's daughter, Sureya. Under the order of Queen Genevieve, Trynne has been training Oath Maidens to protect the kingdom; Sureya joins. Trynne continues to be the Painted Knight in secret in order to protect her king; King Drew refers to her as his silent shield. But the enemy Emperor Gahalatine tries to control the kingdom of Ceredigion by attacking multiple places at once. Trynne was the only person able to save her duchy, the other duchies lost. Trynne was then sent on another mission to discover the weaknesses of the emperor in his own realm. She soon learns that his Wizrs are corrupt and are trying to control the emperor's domain and that the emperor wants to marry her. During the final battle, Trynne was able to save Ceredigion from destruction by accepting Gahalatine's marriage proposal with the condition that he submits to King Drew as the rightful ruler. The emperor is so enamored by Trynne that he accepts.

Reader thoughts:I am skeptical about the romance (she's only 16! How can she pick a husband??), but I really liked the rest.I got lost a few times when Trynne was hopping from place to place. I'm not sure how long everything took from the time her island was invaded until the final battle at the capital's palace and her negotiation with the emperor guy.I love how much Trynne had to struggle. She loses her dad, then her mom, and then her brother. She doesn't just lose her head; she does her best to keep helping people and training her shield maidens. She should be so emotionally unstable but doesn't let that rule her (and, yes, we can choose how to react to our emotions).I just love that these characters think about their choices before making stupid mistakes. Trynne has a lot of tough decisions before her, but she never acts rashly. I can feel how hard it is for her to do some of these things (conduct a funeral, not fall in love, trust a betrayer, and kill someone in cold blood). My heart reacts when hers does.I love what is happening to Owen! It makes me so worried that he found himself with Dire (I don't even know who that is!). What is going on? What will he do?Writer thoughts:There is such a difference between someone's initial reaction to a book and what they remember. My initial reaction was, "This is amazing!!!" Even just 3 days later, I don't remember what made it so amazing. Yes, I really enjoyed it, but why? The plot wasn't phenomenal. I was emotionally invested in the characters, though. I suppose that makes the difference. How much does a reader care about the character vs how much did they enjoy the plot. A strong combination of both will let the reader remember the book much longer.

I learned about this book from Oliver Sacks; he's often mentioned Luria as a hero and cited this book as an example of what he's trying to do. It is a case study--collaboration between doctor and patient--of a man who suffered severe effects from a brain injury incurred during the Second World War; he's lost most of his memory, including his education and how to do the simplest things; however his brain's intact when it comes to his personality. He's in the worst possible position, in a way, because he's conscious of all his deficiencies, but he's almost powerless to correct them.Almost. But he can try. The part of him that can try is intact. This is a great book to read when you're depressed and feeling sorry for yourself because it makes you feel how lucky you are. The patient tries to get his life back back by writing about his experiences: what he can do, what he can't do, what he's trying to do. It's heartbreaking but also stunning, what can be accomplished by will alone--will is pretty much all the patient has left.A fascinating and moving book.

Dr. Luria tells an marvelous account of a soldier's struggle to regain a personal sense of self after suffering a bullet wound to the head. The brave and enduring struggle of the soldier is very touching and allows you to appreciate cognitive function in yourself; while lamenting the tragedy of the soldier's plight.I read this book shortly after having a craniotomy to remove a meningioma from my brain. What I experienced for a week or two after the surgery was the soldier's reality, and much worse, for the remainder of his life. This book should be required reading for all.

I have always enjoyed the writings of Oliver Sacks, and now I was able to meet his mentor and the model for his approach to case histories. Luria shows why Dr. Sacks was so impressed--his thoroughness and compassion combine with meticulous clinical detail to form a fully dimensional picture of the subject.

The author of neuropsychology has done a phenomenal job of describing not just the specific brain damage but also the incredible impact on the man's life [25 plus years]. The only change the publisher should make is use different fonts for when Luria is speaking AND ANOTHER WHEN THE PATIENT IS WRITING. It should be required reading for all who work with TBI patients.

A classic.

Here is a story of a man trying to restore himself following a brain injury. He struggles with an erratic, inconsistent memory which struggles with placing him in time with respect to location and context. Despite his struggle Luria's subject persists in the endeavour to find his lost self and reclaim the fractured shards of his life, stored in memory, into a cohesive whole, however, unfortunately never actually realising his goal. One can only commend the subject for his determination and his persistence and stand with him in his struggle. Who are we without memory.

I appreciate this book for what it offers in regards to understanding brain injury from a clients perspective. I found it repetitive in that Luria would explain what the client experienced in a similar way as the client explained it.

I ordered this book for my daughter and she couldn’t put it down but at page 573, it jumped to 620. I’ve missed the return window. Just make sure to check the pages as soon as you receive the book.

Great price, but it is all 7 books combined into one volume and one table of contents; which makes navigating to different books and chapters a bit more difficult than if they were 7 distinct books.

IMPORTANT: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases. This difference isn't as prominent or noticeable as it was with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone, but still something to keep in mind. Also, to answer a question that has come up quite a bit, this is the FULL BOOK and not an abridged or shortened version.The overall quality is fantastic. The colors are vibrant and the images are, in my opinion, even better than those in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: The Illustrated Edition (Harry Potter, Book 1).The best features:1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy orange hardback with green lettering on the spine.2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.3. All chapter intros are illustrated.4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains". In Chamber of Secrets (compared to Sorcerer's Stone), some pages even have beautiful patterns over the entire page. One page has a spider-web pattern and is right next to a picture of Aragog. Quite brilliant overall.I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. Based on the fact that the illustrations for this book were even better than in the first book, I'm now looking forward to the rest of the series even more. Prisoner of Azkaban is next and I'm heartbroken it'll be so long before I get to have it in my collection.

I didn't read Potter as a child, unfortunately Christians were making a fuss over it and it was banned. Now as an adult with an 11 year old daughter I delved in and having read the firs chapter of the first book , I declared I didn't get the fuss...I am now in my second read through of the books. I finished them in three weeks. We've watched the first three movies and I await my daughter finishing each box anxiously so we can watch the next!The books are so well written they transport you, nothing less. It's a great escape at the end of the day.As for all the Christian hullabaloo there's no real magic in the book. It's on par with bewitched or cartoons. I suppose if you're the type to ban Disney then these aren't for you, but for the rest of the population they're really harmless and silly.The later books are a bit darker but the first several are really kind of cartoon magic.This second book is better than the first as we are already introduced to all the characters. Character development and friendships deepen in the second book and you begin to become attached to the little magicians and start to realize why this series created such a rabid fandom.The books are adventurous and imaginative and have so much heart. The stories are packed with substance- very little to no filler in these books. They're a kids series, but it's the first time in a long time I have read a book and didn't feel like skimming a good bit. There's nothing you want to miss in these!It's great for a parent to read with their child, bc anytime you can bond over something especially as they get older it's a wonderful thing.And for those adults who didn't read as a kid, go ahead, you won't be bored. Yes they're kids books but they're written on a level everyone can enjoy. That's the real magic!

The Chamber of Secrets is in my opinion the weakest of the Harry Potter books. Still, it is a great read compared to 90% of other books in general, and 99% of other children's fantasy novels. The art in these books are simply amazing. They add to the story subtly, rather than take the story over as the movies did. To me, this is vital, as part of the joy of the Harry Potter world is the evocation of your imagination. I am happy to give my kids a little push with art, as they clearly still create their own images of quidditch, Hagrid, and the often explosive and unexpected effects of Ron's broken wand.

These illustrated editions of Harry Potter were done right! All of the original text is there and the artwork is beautiful. Every page has something, whether it's an illustration that takes up a full double page spread, a little drawing in the corner, a thematic border, or just a visually textured background. It may sound chaotic, like the visuals could be too much and break up the flow of reading but it is not; it enhances the story as you turn the pages and delight in the new visuals that each page brings. I imagine these would be a great way to bring children into the story, but they're so nice you may want to protect and collect these beauties. I can't wait for them to release the others.

I loved the latter so much, i dove right in to the former, and made sure I had all of his works in English on order immediately. Definitely talking crazed binge, here. The meditative dialogue of such rich complexity as to evoke Ibsen or Chekhov. The personal drama is set against and amidst the narrative of nature, of climate and animal emotion and evolution. I've only ever experienced such synchronicity of human and innate nature in the works of Madison Smartt Bell.The absolute crystallization and distilled perfection of Kawabata's intuitively masterful prose is unsurpassed.A masterpiece.

My fourth time through the entire Mitford series and it never fails to delight! Tonight is Christmas Eve, and coincidentally or serendipitously, I just happened to finish this book which ends on Christmas Eve. “God’s timing is perfect.” Highly recommend to those seeking peace and simplicity in life.

I read the Mitford/Father Tim series by Jan Karon several years ago and enjoyed them very much. Now I'm listening to the books on CD during my drive home commute everyday. Hearing the stories aloud is a wonderful stress reducer. Its almost like meeting and catching up with news of old friends. Every character's story has challenges but with Father Tim's never failing faith and perseverance everything always works out for the best.

I struggled getting into the first book, but every one since has just been like going home to see family. I love reading the stories of Fr. Tim, Cynthia, Dooley, and all of the wonderfully amazing citizens of Mitford. It just feels like the perfect little down that everyone would love to be a part of. I can’t wait to read the next one!

I love all of Jan Karon's Mitford series. I'll be sad if she doesn't keep writing about these charming characters and their quaint lives. I especially love Father Tim and Cynthia and their Christian love. The Bible verses and the quoting of the liturgies are so familiar to me and it's refreshing to read these pages with no sex or profanity, yet they are filled with true love. The guys at the Grill are so funny and sound like some folks I know!The only thing about this edition was that it was sent to my i pad; I'm sure it went to my kindle as well, but I hardly read from it anymore as I like the i pad better. I don't know what happened, but all throughout the book the numeral "1" appeared everywhere at the end of words in place of the letter that should have been there. Annoying after a while but I still loved the story. I don't know if it went out that way to other readers or not but it was strange!Great series, though-

I am reading the entire Mitford series and, oddly enough, this has become my favorite. I loved the new characters and the new setting, while maintaining close ties with Mitford. I loved the excitement and the wonderful, simple theology. I must say, however, that the Kindle version was VERY difficult to read. (I hope Amazon reads this. I want my money back!) The last letter of many of the words is replaced by the number "1" and followed by "...." It was extremely distracting and interrupted the flow of the book while I figured out what word belonged there. On some pages, this happened multiple times. Thank goodness Ms. Karon' s genius shone past this and, once again, she delivered a winner.

It has been a long time since a series not in the fantasy genre has captivated my attention and imagination the way Ms. Karon's Mitford series has. As a former resident of WNC, I find her firsthand insight to the people, the region and the atmosphere to be right on the mark. I love the fact that I could step out of my own doorstep and see each and every character in the series as my friends and neighbors. Well Done!In A New Song, Ms. Karon continues the great thread she has begun and the shift of Fr. Tim and Cynthia to Whitecap from Mitford only adds fresh vitality to this series. The characters are solid, the dialog very real and the book moves from the very serious to the sublime. *the deep sea fishing trip was so funny, I had to put the book aside and surrender to a laughing fit....thank you for that! *If you have enjoyed Mitford up to now, then by all means read A New Song. I fervently hope that Ms. Karon continues to bring us the news from Mitford for some time to come.

You have to listen to the series in order to enjoy them fully. This is a replacement for another audiobook of the same title we had lent to a friend who lent it to someone else and on until we decided just to replace it. Anyway, the stories are very enjoyable and the audio quality is still good. Our audiobook library now numbers well over a thousand. We listen to our audiobooks while traveling, working on the farm or orchard, or just loafing.
