I haven’t been able to work through this, but the book seems good. It appears to be well laid out and the exercises/content seems applicable. I wish I had time to work through it as I intended, but this will have to wait a few months.

This book has over 500 pages that cover Web Aps and only about 100 basic information pages on desktop applications. Screen shots were very light and very difficult to see. Web Aps are only available to people who have access to a share point server, SQL server, so that Access can be shared on the net. I do not recommend this book unless you are planning on writing Web Aps.

The "Step by Step" series of Microsoft books is one of my preferred products for Microsoft software releases and has always been a good investment when I migrate to new software versions. I remember days long ago where these Microsoft press books actually were part of your software purchase. Consequently, to gain more than marginal use of various office products, a user has to learn functions on their own or from information resources like this book and on-line tutorials. Microsofts "Help" search tool is of marginal value and is really only helpful for the very basic functions of each office product.I never fail to learn something new from each edition of this series. I find them helpful to learn new capabilities or reinforce information I've known from earlier releases. The organization and instruction in these manuals is much better than attempts by other "basic-use themed" books which provide only an overview at best; I've bought these on occasion and they are adequate for general use. This series provides me the information to know more than the basics. This series isn't all-encompassing, but quite thorough. For me, these books provide great information and instruction up to the intermediate+ level if needed/desired. After 20 years of Microsoft office use, I consider myself to be a competent and near expert user of each aspect of MS Office, but each release presents new capabilities and at times a change or removal of functions. These books have saved me a great deal of time and frustration. They remain part of my office library and are referenced often by both me and my colleagues. Great price point for the level of information. A well-constructed paperback reference book. I'd pay more and rate these as perfect if the book was made with slightly higher-quality paper and color images/pictures (heavy highlighting tends to bleed slightly through paper). However, for this price point, the book is adequate and better than many others in quality (the paper of others is similar to paperback novels/newspapers) and easily survives routine and frequent use/reference. Important text/tips are illustrated in blue/bold as a contrast to the predominant black text on white paper.

Purchased one to many

Easy to use and learn program. Lessons were great. Would recommend to anyone who wants to learn access 2013 program

Very satisfied!

I love the Step by Step books. They are easy to follow and understand. A good way to learn new things.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Junger’s most recent book, War (2010), which recounts his experiences with combat troops in war-torn Afghanistan, embodies both his ongoing fascination with life “on the tip of the spear” and his public image as a square-jawed danger-seeker. But it was The Perfect Storm (1997), written while he was a freelance tree-climber with only a notepad and an idea, that put him on the map. The outline is well known because the events made the news, because the book became a best-seller, and because the book became a major motion picture with A-list talent. In October 1991, a freak convergence of weather—a storm from the west, a cold front from the north, and a hurricane from the south—resulted in the Halloween Storm, a once-in-a-century gale that wreaked havoc on the North Atlantic. As befits a story so huge, Junger follows a diverse array of people through it, including fishermen, sailors, and rescue personnel. But it’s the story of the doomed swordfish boat Andrea Gail, whose crew was never found, that is the most compelling, and it is here that Junger shows the strength of his craft. In re-creating what might have happened to the six-man crew, he seamlessly weaves known facts with everything from interviews with survivors of other storms to explanations of fishing-boat architecture and the science behind drowning, with results so unforgettable that we can well imagine their final moments. But the Andrea Gail is not the whole story. There are other sword boats, the beleaguered sloop Satori with its crew of three, and a diverse array of rescuers whose actions are nothing short of heroic. There is a wealth of information here about the practice and business of fishing and about weather, sea, and people, but Junger shapes it all with an almost novelistic sense of pace and timing. Like Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air (1997), about disaster on Mount Everest, it’s a thrilling, sobering, and extremely accessible book that may well serve as the point of entry for readers curious about its subject. Rarely are works of nonfiction so deeply affecting. --Keir Graff

“Every boater is drawn to storm-at-sea stories, and this one beats them all.” - Philadelphia Inquirer“Rich, compassionate characterization, as well as taut, suspenseful prose. A tale that doesn't skimp on facts, yet keeps you turning pages from beginning to end.” - Seattle Times“Riveting…The natural upheaval holds center stage and acts as a character, but the story converges upon human beings―in this case, the six-man crew of the doomed Gloucester swordfishing boat Andrea Gail.” - Boston Globe“Harrowing, relentless…and thoroughly enjoyable.” - Kansas City Star“A terrifying, edifying read…Readers…are first seduced into caring for the book’s doomed characters, then compelled to watch them carried into the jaws of a meteorological hell. Junger’s compassionate, intelligent voice instructs us effortlessly on the sea life of the sword-fisherman, the physics of a sinking steel ship, and the details of death by drowning.” - Dava Sobel“One reads with the most intense concern, anxiety and concentration; and if one knows anything at all about the sea one feels the absolutely enormous strength of the hurricane winds and the incredibly towering mass of the hundred-foot waves.” - Patrick O'Brian“The pages of this book crunch with salt.” - Boating

I have been wanting to read this book for years, and after reading all of the glowing reviews for it, I thought it might make for an exciting afternoon off work. I was wrong. This book has a lot of tech-jargon in it and I found that boring. I thought I would love this book because it was the story of a real storm, real lives in jeopardy and the supposedly gripping tale of six men and their journey out to sea to find their individual fortunes. What I found was a book that had some brilliant moments of literary genius, for example, when describing the storm, but unfortunately the rest of the book read like a longer article that would have been submitted to a monthly magazine for men. I didn't feel much for the characters in the book, which is sad since they were real people not fictional creations.I kept hoping while I was reading this book that it would become more exciting and that the human element would come more into focus. I already knew when I started this book that the boat disappeared, i felt that was a given. I wanted to know more about how...when...why things occurred and why the decisions affected those lives happened. I felt this book honestly would have been a great read if I had been looking for a book of technical fact and not a thrilling adventure, but this book did not live up to what the cover promised.

I saw the movie years ago and it was very impactful. My husband and I recently returned from a vacation to Gloucester, MA and it was our first visit since the huge storm in October of 1991. We had spent quite a few vacations in that area in the late 1980s and we stayed in the same place this time that we had way back then. The inn had pictures taken in the aftermath of the storm which just heightened my interest in the storm so I decided to read the book. While the book and the movie differ (from little things like The Crow's Nest doesn't back up to the harbor to large things like the movie's speculation of what went on on-board the Andrea Gail), if you enjoy one of them you will enjoy the other. I watched the movie again shortly after finishing the book just for comparison. For anyone who enjoys non-fiction books about people facing tremendous odds against nature such as climbing the huge mountains such as Everest or through-walking the Appalachian Trial, this would be a good book for you to try. As in most situations like this, each individual decision isn't necessarily bad or wrong, but when taken as a whole the results can be catastrophic. It also gives the reader a better understanding of the lives of the commercial fisherman on the eastern seaboard. While it is often romanticized, it is actually a very hard life with lots of grueling work that contains a lot of danger for both life and limb.I enjoyed the book tremendously and I am sure I will re-read it in the future. Even my husband (who isn't a big reader) found himself fascinated with it.

This is the movie story but it's not the movie story. This is so much more than the film. Sebastian Junger did his research, going back into history about both the fishing industry and the storms of the region, just to provide context to the story of the Halloween storm. He even worked in the area (though not in fishing) for a time in order to be accepted enough by the local people that they would talk with him about fishing, fishermen, and the Andrea Gail. I found it fascinating. And if you think the movie exaggerated things, go read about Ernie Hazard, the Fair Wind, and pitch-poling.

Sebastian Junger’s book A Perfect Storm replays the Andrea Gail’s demise during an epic storm off the East Coast in the early ‘90s. The wonder of his writing stems from his ability to take the readers on their harrowing ride using facts from everything else that happened to other doomed ships and sailors during the same storm. You know from the beginning that the Andrea Gail’s crew does not survive, but he does a terrific report revealing how dangerous life (and, sadly, death) at sea can be.

The Andrea Gail and the events that took place in October of 1991 are brought to bear on the reader by delving into the personal lives of the men who sailed upon her. The reader is thrust into the very essence of an industry that supportes fishing under harsh and sometimes deadly environment."The Perect Storm" details such a time and goes to the very heart of those who were left behind as well as giving us new respect for those lost in the storm tossed waters.True, the book does mix past tense with present and it does take you on a journey, spinning you from time and place while developing the story. However, it presents the facts and gives the reader a chance to understand the life of a sword boat captain and his crew.Junger has given the reader a glimpse into the lives of men who were doing their daily job, yet done in the face of danger. You will come away with a new found appreciation for these men and those that follow suit. I dare say you will not look upon a menu and see swordfish without reflecting upon the printed words with the "The Perfect Storm".It was very thought provoking and the amount of research done shows through in the final work. The errors in grammer and jargon can be overlooked due to its' fast paced style and readability. Take the time to read this book and do not skim over the contents to get to the end.

Amazon.com Review

After what happened to her face, Marina stopped talking. Completely. Even the people at the hospital couldn't help her find her voice again. In an almost hopeless, last-ditch effort, Marina is shuffled to a boarding school--where she's required to keep a journal. Ugh! Slowly, though, the secrets begin to pour from her spirit onto the paper. The more shape she can give to the nightmare, the more she is released from it. This is one of the most intelligent, realistic novels about post-traumatic stress ever written for young people. Marina's transformation will inspire any teen who has ever struggled to find his or her voice.

This review has been crossposted from my blog at The Cosy Dragon.com. Please head there for more in-depth reviews by me, which appear on a timely schedule.Marina has been scarred for life, in her interior and on her exterior. She doesn't talk, at all, any more. She shrinks into walls, and has spent a long time in hospital. There's some really nice insights into the way teenagers feel in this novel. Marina wonders at one point why adults seem so confident. And she asks whether they have lessons after they graduate high school! I kinda wish we adults did get that. But it's all a matter of hard earned experience. After one of the other novels I had read recently, this short look into family life is relatively beautiful. Marina's family is dysfunctional, and there's no remedy for that, but the other families' lives that she peers into are good.I like Marina, and at no point did I feel frustrated by the way she was behaving. I understood that there were things going on that she didn't write about, and at the same time felt ok with that.A boarding school always sounded good to me, because I thought it would be fun. I think that's the fault of Enid Blyton and her 'The Naughtiest Girl in School' series. This boarding school, from Marina's perspective, is both Heaven and Hell. After hating it there, she finds that it is helping her more than she knew.I'd strongly recommend this novel for teenagers. Angsty, but resolute. Tortured, and yet satisfying. I first read it in high school, a little, unoffensive looking book that has so many feelings inside I'm surprised it can stay on the shelf.I didn't know until I was looking for images of this book, that it was his debut novel. I think it's the first novel of his I read, but I could be wrong. The rest of his novels are just as unfinished as this one, with the exception of 'Tomorrow When the War Began'. By unfinished, I don't mean not well written. It's that it is up to the reader to work out what comes next.I went looking for a PDF copy of the half-sequel, 'Take My Word for It', and instead found a fascinating interview/author biography of Marsden. And he has a school! He's the Principal of Candlebark, just north of Melbourne, Victoria. Just as his books promote independence and resilience in children and teens, his school does also.

John Marsden has yet to let me down. His writing is always thoughtful, poignant, realistic and adventurous."So Much to Tell You" is definitely up to par. I've always found it unfair that his writing is considered at the teenage level, so many people in other age brackets can benefit from the perspective his characters experience. The story is one people have heard before; a story of a young girl hurt by her family. However, the way Marsden puts you inside of her head is amazing and unique. It's almost to the point you can't tell if he's an author writing about a girl... or an author who has discovered a notebook lying by the side of the road. This novel is a great exploration of coping with issues, and a highly recommended read for adults as well as teens.

It's a play not book

John Marsden is an award winning international writer of young adult fiction. This is an important piece of writing as the tale connects to young adults, particularly young girls, because the central theme of this work is "fitting in", having experienced a horrific trauma, (which the author never specifies) learns to speak again as her only form of communication is through a diary which she is forced to write in the boarding school she is cruelly placed. The reader does not discover the narrator's name until the end of the tale.We are only permitted to see her past through her pain, the trauma, and it is vague at best. The story wanders, spinning off on many tangents that are irrelevant to the plot. Teenagers, though, do the same thing: talking about their parents, their close calls with the opposite sex and the obligatory rebelliousness which most Middle School girls' experience. So Much to Tell You is about the thoughts, feelings, fears and hopes of a little girl whose face has been terribly disfigured; we do not know how her face has been damaged and through the entire diary, only catch glimpses of the past. The text rambles as a young person does. The text is an effort to connect to young people and, from the classes that I've run on the text with these young people, captures their naive and evolving minds. My only criticism is the major issues in the novel, that is to say, her relationship with her father and mother, as she hates her mother but loves her father though he is in jail; the reason being something connected to her "accident", and her mother disconnecting, opens the door to a task of creative writing for the class.Interestingly, the young women whose task it was to "fill in the blanks" as it were; in other terms answer the questions the novel fails to do, the young women in my class actually seemed to at least, write `better' than Marsden. Why?Because a middle-aged man, no-matter how taletent he is will never write like a 13 year old girl. He did a marvellous job, exceptional in fact, but when I read the actual, he came close but did not hit the mark.So Much to Tell You is a good piece of young adult fiction that captures a 13 or 14 mind of a teenager on the brink of adulthood.Marsden upon request wrote a play based on the novel and high schools across Australia have preformed to a successful outcome. One of the better young adult novels.

This isn't a book that I imagine the sequel of. I imagine sequels to many books but surprisingly enough-this one looks as if you'll feel a little 'empty' after finishing it but it does nothing of the sort. I don't enjoy reading groupings of diary entries but these are as well done as Anne's Frank's diary! They may not have amazing descriptive passages but are simple, painful and very frank. I related to many of the passages that I fell into my own thoughts amoungst it.This book is a short read so it'll be good to read if you are bored. Many won't understand it but those who will know who I'm talking about and 'what' I'm talking about.Surprisingly enough- the book is like a plain diary. No long incidents are described to explain anything and yet when you finish the book everything will seem completely logical.

"True Thai, with its thoughtful recipes and arresting photographs, brings the bright and enchanting spirit of Thailand to life. It is a feast for the eyes and the imagination—a pleasure both to read and to cook from." -James Oseland, editor-in-chief of Rodale's Organic Life and author of Cradle of Flavor   "I'm so happy to see a beautiful, imaginative Thai cookbook by a talented Thai-born chef and cook—it's about time! The location photos transport us to Thailand and the recipes are anchored in Hong Thaimee's knowledge of Thai home cooking and street food riches." -Naomi Duguid, author of Burma: Rivers of Flavor   "Hong Thaimee has become a voice for authentic, modern Thai cuisine and an influencer in the culinary industry. Without a doubt, I will soon be making one of her recipes." -Jean-Georges Vongerichten  "True Thai is pulsating with flavor, color, and passion. The love to which this book is dedicated comes through on every page—a bold welcome to Hong Thaimee's table—TRUE THAT!" -Anita Lo, Annisa   "Hong Thaimee's True Thai is the Thai cookbook we've been waiting for in the United States. Chef Thaimee was a passionate competitor against me on Iron Chef America, but my favorite thing about her book is the inspiration she gets from her family to bring tantalizing flavors to your table." -Bobby Flay, author of Brunch at Bobby's"Hong Thaimee brings humor to tales of her own childhood in Chiang Mai. As you turn the pages of her lush cookbook, you feel as though she's taking you along on a family vacation to Southern Thailand, Bangkok, and New York, and it's a privilege."-Cookbooks365.com"Who can resist a Thai cookbook that takes you beyond the familiar favorites at your corner restaurant, while still being more or less doable on a weeknight (especially if you live near a well-stocked Asian grocer)? I know I can't. Yes, you'll find pad Thai and yum nua in here. But mah mah instant noodles? With crab and Chinese broccoli? Candied salted chiles? Watermelon and Thai basil fruit shake? Hong Thaimee, chef at Ngam in New York, doesn't hesitate to go there, either."-NPR BOOKS"The recipes are very well written and ever enticing."-THE HUFFINGTON POST "True Thai is one of the best Thai cookbooks on the market. . . True Thai is particularly flavorful and healthy. Once you try it, it will become part of your culinary experience." -THE WASHINGTON BOOK REVIEW

I see all these five star reviews and I think, "What right do you have to review a cookbook without cooking from it?" If you think the same, fret not, I'm here. I'm not a novice to Thai cooking, as I've cooked approximately 70% of the recipes in Pok Pok and 50% of the recipes in Leela's Simple Thai Food. I've also been to Thailand for a few weeks last year so I know more or less how things should taste. This book arrived a few days ago and I had the ingredients for the Ook Gai so I thought why not give that a spin. It turned out HORRIBLY WRONG. it was very soupy with the 4 cups (1 quarter) of chicken broth, and not salty enough, and definitely not creamy like the pictures stated. I followed the recipe's suggested 20 minute+10 minute cooking time and the amount of liquid in the pot was way too much. I left the stove on to simmer for an hour more to see if the sauce reduced but it's still too watery and definitely not creamy like the picture looks.I'll try more recipes and edit my review, but so far not so good.Edit 1:Cooked the coconut rice with mango today. When I read the recipe I found it weird that she would use jasmine essence instead of pandan, but whatever floats her boat as long as it taste good. Well, after cooking, I can say that it cannot be described with the adjective "good", as the 1tsp of jasmine essence really messed things up. The whole pot of rice was very very very jasminy, and it was quite nasty. Had to throw out the whole pot, and in the future I'll stick with Leela's recipe if I want a sweeter version and the Pok Pok one if I want a slightly salty version. I'm gonna cook the Green curry in a few days and see how that goes, but I'm very skeptical.Edit 2: Made the green curry today. Can't say it's the best green curry I've made, but it's edible. Be sure to only use 2 tablespoons of fish sauce and 2 tablespoons of palm sugar as opposed to the 3 called for in the book. 3 would be waaay too much for just 1 can of coconut milk. Also I find the 8 minute simmering time for a curry is WAY too short. I've tasted it at 8 minutes then at 1 hour and the 1 hour tastes much more flavorful.

A beautiful cookbook which recreates the passion and honesty of simple family/comfort Thai that Ngam NYC (Chef Hong's Restaurant) is known for and what has made her restaurant the best Thai in New York City (according to Village Voice) which is no mean feat. Chef Hong came up to Vancouver last year to teach some cooking courses and we were all amazed by the love and passion she puts into the food she cares so much for. True Thai is an extension of that love and we are looking forward to trying all the recipes in due course. You will not be disappointed by this opportunity to recreate simple family style Thai comfort food in the privacy of your home. Good luck and enjoy!

The recipes I've tried here was not good. A disappointment.

Excellent cookbook. I have several Thai cookbooks that I use and this is one of the best. Each of the recipes I have tried has turned out quite good. Very pleased with my purchase.

This is simply a great book. The way the chapters are put together, the help with terms and pantry items one needs is really a plus. The whole work is informative and beautiful.

I'm a huge fan of Thai food but have never attempted to create any dishes in my own kitchen, aside from Pad Thai, I've always just left that to the experts of my favorite local Thai food restaurants. Chef Thaimee visited Houston earlier this year and hosted a pop up dinner where I was blown away by her gracious presence and love of serving up family style meals, creating a space for people who'd never met to dive into her Thai cuisine and great conversation. Her cookbook is consistent with what I experienced at the pop up dinner, Hong is passionate about people and about teaching. In the cookbook, she offers up her very personal family recipes, full of some spices and ingredrients I'd never heard of, and brings them to life through photos of the people and places throughout Thailand she holds so dear. This cookbook is a bridge of sorts, connecting me to a beautiful culture and eliminating the guess work and fear from creating these dishes for my own family. My personal favorites are the Som Tum (green papaya salad), the Ab Pla (grilled fish in banana leaves) and the Moo Satay! And I made them all on my own! Thank you Chef Hong for this beautiful guide to bringing such delicious dishes to my family's table!

Authentic Thai

This is a BEAUTIFUL cookbook! The images are breathtaking and I feel like I really get to know Chef Hong through the stories she weaves throughout the book. The food is wonderful too. Highly recommended.

Author Adam Higginbotham has done a masterful job of blowing the lid off of the sarcophagus of obfuscation under which the Soviet Union attempted to bury the truths about what happened at Chernobyl in April of 1986. He dug deep into archives, personal papers, professional journals, and hundreds of hours of interviews to piece together the puzzle of the events that led up to the explosion that destroyed Reactor Number Four at Chernobyl. The author offers, as well, background into the flaws in the design of the RBMK graphite-moderated boiler water reactor. He examines the corrupt and labyrinthine system of managing nuclear power in the USSR. While this is a superb work of journalism, it also holds the intrigue of a murder mystery. Who really was responsible? What really happened? Was it design error or operator error? The author makes this a very enlightening journey inside the minds of Soviet and Ukrainian leaders and scientists, as well as inside the broken lives of the workers who operated the plant and lived in nearby Pripyat.Mr. Higginbotham makes a credible case for the fact that the Chernobyl disaster and its lingering aftershocks were the catalysts that led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Glasnost and Perestroika were not able to overcome the inertia of a Soviet machine that did not know how to tell the truth to its people or to the world at large. That lack of candor became as toxic for the Soviet state as the radioactive debris from Chernobyl became for those in the path of the fallout.I had a very personal;interest in this story. In 1992, I was part of a UN group that toured the Chernobyl complex, the village of Pripyat, and several hospitals in Kiev that were treating hundreds of victims of chronic radiation poisoning. Many of them were suffering from leukemia, thyroid cancer, and a host of other diseases. When we arrived at Chernobyl, we were taken to a visitors' center where we were show a 1:6 scale model of the Chernobyl complex. The official guide proceeded to give this UN group a speech about the wonderful safety history of Soviet nuclear power. "Of course, there was this one small incident that the world tries to blow out of proportion," At that time, one of the remaining reactors was still functioning, ,and we were taken to the control room, mere yards from the notorious sarcophagus that had been built to bury the debris of the core of Reactor Number Four. The engineers operating the plant were smoking, and ashes from their cigarettes fell onto the dials of the instruments that told them the status of the reactor and the turbines. It was clear that not many safety lessons had been learned from the worst nuclear accident in history. This is a story with many villains and some remarkable heroes. Add to the list of heroes Mr. Higginbotham, whose yeoman work in uncovering facts and truths about Chernobyl will help the world to make more informed choices about the future of nuclear energy. This is a book that should be read by anyone with an interest in energy, the history of the Soviet Union, and the forces that shape history.Enjoy!

This is a gripping and enthralling read: a wild ride through a nuclear disaster and the desperate attempts of the men and women who tried to prevent it becoming something far worse. Higginbotham has a great turn of phrase, a grip on the material - but most of all, a sense that this a real story about real people. If you go into this seeing it as a story of nuclear physics and the failure of the Soviet Union, you’ll come out realizing that’s only part of the story. The men who fought the fires after the first explosion, the woman mayor who tried to save her town, the families who watched loved ones suffer from radiation sickness - this is about life and death. The story also tells us something about how politicians and officials struggled to manage - even deny - the truth, but the scale of the disaster escaped them. It’s a great read.

Journalist Adam Higginbotham has written what has been described as “a blinding work of narrative fact” that will “amaze, enthrall, and cause every reader to shed tears” for the legacy left behind by a nuclear disaster in “Midnight in Chernobyl.” That’s a flowery review but totally appropriate. The author brilliantly details the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident that started out to be a safety check intended to simulate a blackout power-failure. Through a combination of reactor design flaws and operators not complying with a test checklist, uncontrolled nuclear reactions caused several steam explosions and an open-air graphite fire. Airborne plumes of radioactive fission products were distributed into parts of the USSR and other European countries for many days. Two deaths occurred at the facility during the accident, 28 firefighters and other employees died of acute radiation sickness shortly afterward, and fourteen cancer deaths of 134 hospitalized survivors followed in the next ten years. It is estimated that, over the long term, several thousand additional cancer deaths will be attributed to the incident’s byproducts. Billions of dollars will be expended to mitigate the damage that has occurred, both to humans and the environment.Secrecy and falsehoods by the USSR are evident throughout the account. It is also apparent that accidents at nuclear plants occur frequently, most of which are relatively innocuous considering the potential. Because nations will never want to admit being the cause of any worldwide disaster, secrecy will probably continue to accompany nuclear mishaps by any government, a scary thought.Higginbottham’s research is immaculate, his comments and conclusions are well founded, and his writing is impeccable. The author has skillfully avoided fustian sentimentality, the scourge of investigative reporting, but still presents crackling prose that was a magnetic attraction for this reader. The official Politburo verdict blames the disaster on gross breaches of regulations by operators whose “irresponsibility, negligence, and indiscipline led to grave consequences.” The report lists the ministers who were dismissed and/or expelled from the Communist Party and states that court proceedings will follow. However, the author goes on to reveal that there’s much more to the incident.Higginbotham has uncovered the reality of the nightmare of nuclear disaster and makes it obvious that more tragedies might be expected. The potential is so real that every proposal for dangerous enterprises, regardless of purpose or stated invulnerability, must be carefully vetted and reviewed by knowledgeable and unbiased sources. A thoughtful study of “Midnight in Chernobyl” is certainly a prudent exercise in gaining such awareness.Schuyler T WallaceAuthor of TIN LIZARD TALES

Duncan Ralston describes Video Nasties as a “Horror Mixtape.” The descriptive writing in each story of this sixteen story collection will allow the reader to “see” or experience dread and horror for 426 (Kindle) pages. Readers can then close the book and go back to a cheerful, safe, and sane real world. If that were only so.HOW TO KILL A CELEBRITY ***** Annie Watkins wrote obituary “standbys” for Channel 5 news. If someone famous or noteworthy died, Channel 5 had to be ready with breaking news. The trick was to write the obituaries in advance. Many of Annie’s obituaries were spot on. She should advance quickly in her career.CHOMPERS ***** Everyone hates to go to the dentist. A large part of that feeling involves the high cost. When Ray heard from a friend about Dr. Barrera, a dentist who worked cheap because he wasn’t technically “legal,” Ray was happy. He could even pick out the teeth he wanted from a display full of available teeth. Ray didn’t wonder where they came from. Too bad for Ray.MENTAL ***** Marigold was an empath. True, her powers weren’t great when she was younger. Luckily, the government had discovered her before her teenage years. They were able to nurture her development and powers during her teenage years. Despite being under constant observation, Marigold had her doubts about the ultimate purpose of her training. Dr. Lex solved the problem for her by falling in lust with Mary. Now, she had to escape.DEAD MEN WALKING ****** Standardized procedures for execution by lethal injection insured a choreographed ceremony ending predictably. Jose Vasquez didn’t go quietly into that dark night. But there was a lot of justice meted out to more than Jose on the appointed date. Palomino might even get a promotion. Or he could win the lottery.THE EYE AT THE DOOR ***** Todd’s problem was that he never stood up for himself. He was a doormat, all his colleagues directed the most unpleasant projects to him, and he was too timid to do anything but accept the abuse. Until the unacceptable behavior of the guy in the next stall of the public restroom enraged Todd with its inappropriate crudeness. All it took was a little outrage to make a new Todd.CUTTINGS ***** Katie made acceptable earnings as a writer, it paid the bills. She knew that the situation was uncomfortable for Gavin, a husband who was trying to find himself. Although she was upset when Gavin spent their last $1200 on a decrepit “ex-hippie” van, she was willing to help him convert the van into the couple’s dream job of a mobile florist shop. The shop succeeded financially but Gavin’s behavior changed as he spent more “alone” time with the van. And who was Tony?BUS DRIVER MAN: A DARK PINES STORY ***** Mr. McAllister was scrupulous in his duties as a school bus driver. He was always on time or checked in if there were unavoidable delays, and kept his bus spotlessly clean. He also liked order and didn’t like bullies on the bus, like the insufferable Jessie Kinsmen, the mayor’s son. McAllister was politically aware enough to not push things too far until the day McAllister decided some sort of revenge was necessary. But he went too far. And that was when one of his student riders, Janey Freely, taught Mr. McAllister a lesson.IN THE SHADOW OF THE MASTERS ***** Tremaine was an art forger. Paint a forgery of a great master, break into a museum, switch the original for the fake, and sell the original to private collectors. Tremaine didn’t work alone; he was practically a slave to Ziminski, an employer he despised. Tremaine hadn’t been to Ziminski’s house more than a couple of times and had never been with Ziminski to see the vault. He had met Magda, Ziminski’s trophy wife and had enjoyed meeting her (several times). She could not compare with the art in the vault.MY PROTECTOR ***** Jenny was sometimes bullied at school but she never lost a confrontation. Aaron was there to help her. No one else could see him but the results were visible to all that Jenny did not lose. The school’s inability to believe Jenny led to her expulsion and sent to special camp. The rules there did not allow her to tell tall tales that would scare others. When she did so, she was to be punished. Jenny warned them not to punish her. They should have listened.SANCTUARY ***** This is a straightforward nature strikes backstory. In a meme from the past, “You shouldn’t mess with Mother Nature.”DO NOT SHAKE OR RATTLE ***** Donnie should have known better. The warning was printed clearly. The result was predictable. As his wife Grace said, “Merry Christmas.”STRAY ***** Max was a high school teacher of history to several groups of unappreciative students. Max was taking it more than a little bit seriously when he packed a duffel bag with guns and ammunition and proceeded to his high school earlier than usual. He would teach the students realistic history. But he had not counted on the dog.HE IS RISEN ***** Madison was Colin’s latest teacher assistant (TA). With a large disparity in age, she served Colin inside and outside the classroom. The two were on vacation and stopped in a town with an unpronounceable name. The people of the town were in the midst of unique and unfamiliar ceremonies and invited the couple to join. It was an invitation they couldn’t refuse. This story has some interesting language unique to Scotland.SQUIRM ***** Libby first noticed the problem with her husband, Bill. Humans should not have a nictitating membrane closing to protect the eyes. Then Libby noticed the same thing with sons Ryan and Dylan. Her family was becoming reptilian. What did this mean for her? What about her place in the family?SHARP ***** The truck with JERRY’S GRINDING SERVICE lettered on the side announced its arrival with a musical tune that was not reminiscent of an ice cream truck. It was more funereal than happy. True, Jerry was providing a service by sharpening knives. But he was also looking for “Sandras,” an objective that, if achieved, would bury childhood trauma. Jerry could never have anticipated the healing powers of Rose.VIDEO NASTIES ***** Think of this story as similar to Poltergeist. It is a “spirits trapped inside the machine” story. After reading this, many will examine their VHS tapes before discarding. This is a collection of stories with no “clunkers.” I encourage readers to read a story and then go do something else. This is a collection that should not be read in one session. There would be a sort of sensory overload. I put this in my “currently reading” collection of about six novels. I read one story here, another novel, then back to another story. It’s equivalent to not eating one food item at a time when there are several dishes in a meal. This is a five Amazon star read and a great example of its genre.

I'm a bona fide Ralston "fangirl," so I'd already read many of the stories in this collection. Ralston is one of my favorite authors for a very good reason- he manages to deliver the most gruesome, horrific, nightmarish material, in the most elegant way. I never stumble over prose or wince at dialogue while reading his work. Many of these tales are nasty and sick, but some, like the story "Mental," go beyond to deliver a deep, psychologically compelling, dystopian vision that I wish could be developed into a full novel. The titular story "Video Nasties" is a delightful Cronenberg/Burroughs/Fulci style tribute to all that is glorious about "schlock" horror videos. I loved the reality-bending, disbelief-suspending, playful tribute to Italian horror masters, like my favorite, Dario Argento. There isn't a dud in the collection, and each story offers readers something fresh and diabolical. Fangirl for life.

Video Nasties is a wildly inventive and varied collection of short fiction from Duncan Ralston. Short horror has great potential for brutal tales and he definitely pulls no punches. The cover for the book is amazing and if you can hang the expense, go for the paperback. If you are of a generation that remembers VHS tapes, this will feel very familiar for you.I liked all the stories but here are a few in particular.Choppers was a great, dark telling of a story type that has been done before but Ralston makes the concept shine. I love the idea of the evil that exists in a monster somehow able to reside dormant within their physical body itself. And what could happen when those body parts are separated from the monster. I love how there is a lot of effective suggestion here without going over the top with dry explanation. Adam might ruin everything but Duncan is the one who ruins the shopping mall Santa Claus. There are some quick and horrifying moments here, leading to a disturbing ending that ties the whole story together with a great line.Cuttings was a nice exploration of a descent into madness. I love the disorientation of the narrative and the feel that what the main character might be perceiving might not be entirely what's happening. It was also an effective use of shifting points of view as a way of building tension. There is a nice element of mystery here and it all builds up to a pretty brutal finish.Do Not Shake Or Rattle is a quick story but it's a great one and despite the dark nature of the outcome, it still managed to make me laugh. For sure, this one will make those of you who shake their presents think twice.Video Nasties, the title story has a great feel of gritty sci fi. The concept is wild and fun to follow along with. With the vibe created by the cover art, I thought it was a great note on which to end the book. Ralston manages to take a concept that is pretty fantastical and complex and still make it relatively easy to follow along with and enjoy. Somehow a gritty horror novella also somehow manages to carry some elements of a superhero origin story as well.Overall this was a great collection. I'd highly recommend checking it out.
