If I were a writer and knew that I would have to give up money if I didn't have a "book" on my publisher's desk by a date certain, and time was up, this is the kind of load of crap I would dish up. What passes for a plot is meaningless: the whole book is fleshed out with WW II history that needn't be narrated as fiction, and arcane minutiae of criminal and civil procedure that couldn't be more boring and, moreover, is woefully inaccurate. I actually felt that I'd been tricked into reading this steamer by being bamboozled by Grisham's reputation, on which I can't comment. BORING!!!!!!

I have always enjoyed John Grisham's novels. This one is a disappointment. First of all I did NOT like the ending at all. I know that's about me and not about the book but I still didn't like it. More than that I didn't like wasting my time thumbing through page after page after page of completely useless narrative. There is a vastly long section at the center of the book where he is writing about the mothers mental problems and the sons law school career that are a complete waste of time. It's obvious that the publishers are paying him by the page or by the word. The result is a huge amount of unnecessary text that doesn't really contribute to the story, that is very useful in putting me to sleep. This is not the first time this is happened. I have found it happening more and more frequently with other authors.

This is a disjointed, dislikable book - a soap opera with some courtroom window dressing and the Bataan Death March thrown in for no apparent reason except alleged depth of feeling. The mystery of the main character is that he won't talk - a sort of misguided Clint Eastwood Man With No Name anti-hero. Not talking can work on the screen but does tend to drag on on the page. The wife does a bad thing while her husband is slogging around in the Philippines, although it isn't clear what that is until the end. Consequences ensue. The hero kills somebody else. The generations-old family farm is lost to a shyster lawyer. Almost everybody dies. Who knew what? When did they know it? Who was wrong? In the end, who cares? I can't believe I read the whole thing.

If you wish to spend at least 1/3 of the book getting a histoty lesson on Gen McAuthor and Japan's takeover of the Philippenes then you may enjoy the book. I skipped over the large majority of this section. The book also drug on and on in other parts. I wanted to enjoy a thriller like the authors earlier books, not a sad, tedious and boring book like this one. this will be my last book by this author.

I was really eager to read this book, and hated it. Long long descriptive passages about mundane things. So much dramatic build up about nothing. The war parts are appreciated but the rest was a waste of time witn unsympathetic characters. Time to find a new fave author.

This was a bad read. Too much information on mostly known history. Agree, not enough character development on some people. Way too much detail before "secret" was FINALLY revealed in last 10 pages!!

A lot of long arduous filler to finally reveal nothing of surprise. Dont believe the hype. This is not his best work. I feel more like the victim of a con job than a satisfied fan.

I read all of Mr. Grisham's novels and look forward to each release with anticipation. But none before have held my interest as much as The Reckoning. My uncle through marriage is a survivor of the Bataan Death March. He never spoke of his experiences. Not a history buff, I had no understanding of the atrocaties of this war. This novel was spellbinding from start to finish.

By the end of 1941, the USA was in the war against Germany and Japan. Now Germany's Navy was no match for the combined forces of the Allies. With in a year the battle in Atlantic was Allies victory.

This book was a well organized and very detailed study of the battle for the Atlantic. The author made what could be a tedious volume into a very interesting and readable book. I recommend it to anyone else interested in the topic.

I knew much of the story of this period having served with veterans from that time and three years on Destroyers. This work fleshed out my understanding with the amazing details of this book A must read for the Naval buff!

A lot of repetition otherwise good book

This book is a fair overview of the Atlantic Campaign and includes some detail on selected convoy battles. However the coverage is superficial and adds nothing to anyone with any prior knowledge of the subject. It would certainly be worth 3 stars until it gets to the last year and introduces the new generation of U-boats. It addresses the Type XXIII Walter AIP boat at some length (without any technical details except that it uses hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizer), but note that the this technology proved to be a dead-end post-war and saw only very limited application. However the Type XXI design was the prototype (when combined with the Albacore hull shape) for every Cold War non-nuc sub and was truly revolutionary in that it's submerged speed was significantly higher than it's surfaced speed; this book never had a single word to say about the Type XXI. And for that glaring example of ignorance I dropped the rating by one star and that is generous.

I have read many Atlantic war books this one ties everything together the best I have seen. A must read for war buffs.

I wanted to get a book to teach me the basics. This did the trick and was an easy read. Overall it does what I expected. I could use more techncical details, but that is for the engineer in me.

Amazon asks us to rate books by stars, but when I read a book about webcasting -- especially when it purports to be a guide for beginners -- I use the "Yeahbut" scale. As in the number of times I scream "Yeah, but..." when the author(s) make some simplistic statement about a complicated issue.I'm happy to report that the "Yeahbut" issue really never came up with this book. Scattered throughout the chapters are sidebars -- some labled "Alerts," some "Author's Tips," and others "Inside the Industry" -- that do a nice job of expanding on issues raised in the main text. Overall, the authors do a fine balancing act between being too simplistic and overloading the reader with detail.Disclosure: Part of my job is producing webcasts, and until recently was in an academic setting where I also taught classes on the subject. I am acquainted with both authors through professional meetings and their other writings. That being said, I have no hesitation in strongly recommending this book.What's unique about the structure of this book is that it covers both technical and business issues equally well. It's straightforward in its approach to technical matters -- lots of screenshots to illustrate settings and controls -- but it also lays out some essential considerations that are all-too-often overlooked by the beginner. Does this webcast really have to be live? What can I reasonably expect from an audience in terms of its connectivity? Can we handle this ourselves, or do we need to outsource this? Can we afford the bandwidth to do this? Folks just starting out seldom realize that getting a computer to spew out video and audio packets over the Internet is darn near the easiest thing in the world to do. Having content worth seeing, well, that's the hard part.One of the challenges of writing about webcasting is that the subject's a moving target. Examples in the book are heavily weighted toward RealNetworks and Microsoft's Windows Media. Quicktime is covered with respect to embedding the player in web pages and creating metafiles, but is generally sold short as a streaming platform. Likewise, Flash is largely dismissed. Both decisions were reasonable at the time the book was written and released. QuickTime Broadcaster wasn't the product it is now with it's use of the H.264 codec, and Flash 8 was still some months away. I'd expect a second edition to use more examples from each of these, but the real meat of this book -- the business, video and audio production, budget and personnel considerations -- are really quite independent of the particular streaming architecture one happens to use. And, for all the hype surrounding Flash here in the Spring of 2006, Windows Media and Real are still the industry heavyweights.There are other good books about the technical side of webcasting -- Damien Stolarz's "Mastering Internet Video : A Guide to Streaming and On-Demand Video" comes to mind as a non-Steve-Mack-authored example -- but Steve Mack and Dan Rayburn have written a unique book: a comprehensive survey of an often misunderstood topic that is both clear and immediately useful in a practical way. If you're new to webcasting, make this book one of your first purchases.

Love these books. My son, who is 9 has been reading them for a little over a year now and this book is wonderful. I must say that this one is not one of his favorites. He is a history junkey, lol. He so far seems to love the Jackie Robinson, Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Robert E Lee, What is the world series the best as a 8 and 9 year old.I also read these to him in the evenings and I really enjoy them as a 40 year old father. I have learned so much from them as well. Sometimes I read them before or after my son in order to have an educated discussion with him about the subject of the book. I really also get alot out of them as well.

It was our first book from "Who Was" and we are very happy with this book. It gives you plenty information about the person. My daughter enjoyed reading this book. We order 4 more book :D

Full disclosure, I haven't read this myself, however my fifth grade students have and they love it. You will not find this on my classroom bookshelf because someone is always readIng it.

Having lived in Dublin for a few years, I really enjoyed this book. It goes through all the famous landmark pubs in the Irish capital, recounting the writers and characters that frequented them and all the great tales from their drinking days. Superb book.

I own four of the O'Reilly pocket references, and of them, this is (sadly) the least useful to me. I am already fairly skilled with the vi (and vim) editor and I was trying to pick up small pointers and tips that would increase my efficiency with the editor. I do a lot of programming with vi, and I know there are some things that I am not doing that could be saving me time.Perhaps the best comparison for this book would be the OReilly Sed & Awk pocket reference. That is really a fantastic little book that offers a cohesive and brief introduction to the editor.This book, instead, reads like a list of commands with very brief descriptions with, seemingly, little scheme or order. It is easier to read the manpage. Sadly, I have not found much use for this book yet.So it might be good to have around if you were trying to do something on a system without manpages, or if you were willing to dedicate the time to figure out the organization of this book (whcih I frankly doubt there is). But in the long run, I think most people (even those seasoned vi(m) users out there) will better benefit from buying the parent book.

If you use the vi editor often, you won't need this book. If, however, you're like me and use it once in a while to make changes in Linux system files, it can come in handy when you can't remember a command or two.Also, the cover is darn cute! :-)So basically this is a quick reference to the vi editor, with additional chapters covering all the other text-based editors that are based on vi (like vim, for instance).

Thought I was buying the 2009 edition used, but received the 1999 1st edition instead. Initially thought it was the sellers error. So I searched the product offerings again and realized that ALL those books offered used under the 2009 edition category are actually for the 1999 1st edition. Amazon gotcha! Not the sellers fault. Got to examine everything on Amazon as if you were a corporate lawyer scrutinizing a contract for your client (yourself) the results of which could cost you dearly if you miss a jot or a tittle because Amazon can't offer an accurate description in an effort to get you to buy something.

I had to use vi again after having been out of the UNIX environment for 6 years, so I bought this book for a refresher. It is OK, but there are not enough examples and more than half of the book is dedicated to other flavors of vi (elvis, nvi, vim, and vile). I need to supplement this book with stuff from the web - some of which was more useful than the book. So yes the book is cheap and somewhat useful, but the web is free!

GREAT little reference! I kept it at my work station and it's so handy that my coworkers end up stealing it from me.

I use this book as a reference all too often. The authors do a good job at laying this book out, and the secrets of vi are all released in this book. I recommend this book mainly because of it's size. It's small enough to keep on the corner of your desk to reference when you need it.

I bought this book decades ago and for a time it was a bible on my desk when I was a research assistant in college. I was very happy to see Amazon offer me a free kindle copy recently.

Didn't find much practical info in the reference. You'd probably be better off getting a printout of common commands from the internet and keeping what tricks you've learned and making your own quick reference.
