During the years I spent as an assistant dean of career services at a Chicago law school, I worked with thousands of law students and alumni. Good overview of legal specialties. Would like to see an updated version, especially as I’m sure the specialties have evolved (particularly those involving technology or the internet). Very useful.

Comprehensive yet easy to read guide gives good insights into each practice area.

Most books available on the legal field are not all that helpful - this book is not one of them. It is very well written and provides a great overview of many legal specialties. A must for Career Offices and students and lawyers who are unsure what field they want to practice in or how they can involved in a particular field of law.

My career center had this and I loved it so much I had to buy it for myself. I can see myself referencing it for years to come even after I choose one path, in case I want to move laterally.

This book is a good place to start, it gives a good overview for someone just exploring the different legal specialties out there.I doesn't have as much detail as I would have liked, but I still think its a good place to start for anyone considering law school.

As other reviewers pointed out, this book doesn't indicate a single negative aspect about any of the practice areas it covers. To me, this seemed unrealistic and impractical for someone trying to make a decision about their career path - being presented with all pros and no cons. I purchased this book to explore possible alternative practice areas for my established practice, perhaps as a guide for new associates I may employ who want to explore different areas of law - and I was disappointed.For starters, I was surprised that many relatively common areas of practice were not addressed at all, such as Social Security Disability, construction law, and a few others. Then, the scope of the people interviewed in this book seems to be comprised mainly of attorneys from Illinois, Minnesota, and Washington DC. I understand that the author has a connection to Illinois, but a criminal defense practice in Chicago may be very different from one in a small town in Utah. Next, the daily tasks. This one drew a few smiles from me. Other than perhaps the description of the prosecutor's job, nearly every single practice area involved several hours per day on the phone, client meetings, and depositions. Really? After a while, all the tasks from the various practice areas begin to blend together and the practice of law seems like one lengthy phone call. Finally, glowing in the warmth of their practice areas, it would seem that all these lawyers are in love with their clients and spend their careers waltzing from one pleasant scene to the next. What about the reality of chasing clients for unpaid bills? Clients who report lawyers to the licensing authorities or sue them for malpractice?Bottom line: the practice of law is not all rainbows and butterflies, but this book would make it seem as though it is.

Just kinda skims over each specialty. Could use some depth.

A must for any pre law or law student. It's helped me sound smart, knowing what different kinds of lawyers do.

Very dense, very good coverage. If you have any interest in the history or major concepts in this field, this is a very good book.

When I asked an astronomer what book he recommended for adaptive optics he disappeared into the control room and returned with 'Hardy'.If you are a technical person---read this book first. Than Roddier...

The book does an excellent job of describing the basic principles and the practice of adaptive optics for astronomical applications. The author was a pioneer in adaptive optics and in the 1970s he built the first system capable of compensating a large astronomical telescope at visible wavelengths. The book gives a good history of adaptive optics including an excellent bibliography. Wavefront sensors, correctors, laser beacons, and wavefront reconstruction and control systems are described. Current adaptive optics programs are described and future prospects are discussed. I had the good fortune of working with the author at the time the first adaptive optics system was built and the author conveys in this book the excitement we felt about adaptive optics at that time. While the book is very specialized and technical, and the number of readers who will enjoy the book is limited, if you are interested in adaptive optics the reading of this book is a must.

Cute book, but be aware of your audience. I bought this intending to give as a gift to the child of a Jewish relative & was surprised & disappointed to see a few pages in that it advises kids to "read the Bible or other inspiring work." I didn't see any indication in the description that this book favored Christianity or any religion. Naming the Bible specifically insinuates an obvious preference, and "other inspiring work" doesn't do equal justice to primary texts of other religious traditions (if that was the intent in that sentence). I have no issue with a kids' book indicating a religious preference, but I was not expecting that when I selected this one and would've appreciated some mention of Bible references in the description.

Love the rhyming in the book tat goes along with the creative pictures. Reminds me a little of Dr. Seuss that I used to read to my daughter when she was a kid. I am sure that the children reading this book will strive to join the club and will make this world a kinder better place

I am so inspired by young author Abigail Perez! As an educator I am always hoping to empower my students to take their dreams into their own hands. In a world of constant consumption, to see a young person step into the role of producer is a great example for all of us. Any elementary teacher can cause a major shift in their classroom culture by reading this book and building touchstone lessons off the clear message it presents. Who doesn't want a classroom full of super kids!

I love the rhymes and illustrations and my kids easily recite them as they talk about their day at the dinner table. This is a book that should be in the hands of every child and is a great spring board for deeper discussions with topics like resiliency, empathy, grit, compassion, and kindness. In addition, this book encourages kids to take care of their mind, body and soul embracing differences in culture and background. I love how she included kids with special needs.

So impressed with this young author! Abigail is definitely an inspiration. As a middle school educator, I can use this book to show my students a variety of things... from resiliency, to goal setting, to overcoming obstacles and the power of positivity. I'm excited to get a hard copy!

This book is written for people at the far left end of the spectrum who are disenfranchised with primarily Republicans, and secondarily Democrats who cannot win elections.It is shocking how many times the authors point to the 2016 elections as the need for driving power back to the cities (read: we lost the election, so let's move power to the Blue bastions). The authors state in chapter one that they will provide "clear relevance for rural areas." What they demonstrate is East Coast, big-city myopic sour-grapes disapprobation.I appreciate the author's stated desire for pragmatism, but what is pragmatic in a city of millions is often unwise in a city of 10,000. For us in small cities and towns, we've not experienced a catastrophic loss in (misplaced) hope in our federal leaders, resulting in a sudden desire to move power to a local level. We've always focused locally, regardless of whether a D or R occupied the Oval Office. I was hoping this book would help me to lead better within my small city, but I will probably use it as overpriced fire starter.In summary, If you live in NYC, Philly, Baltimore, etc., you might enjoy this read. For most Americans, this book does very little to help us grow local economies, develop better social services, or navigate & improve local governmental structures.-Disappointed Small City Moderate

A beautiful and timely book - clear, visionary, and action-oriented!I see Bruce and Jeremy’s book as an inspiration for a long overdue Regional Plan for Metropolitan Washington. The new localism ideas and policies, set in a regional context, could benefit this fascinating region, with lots of "hidden assets". The authors rightfully emphasize the critical issue of metropolitan governance – where government fragmentation works against handling the land use issue regionally. The regional plan could apply some of Jeremy's concepts about metropolitan finance, and inject some real problem-solving and a real action plan in it, not just principles, ideas, and blueprints.The book’s arguments are well buttressed by carefully selected case studies, which illustrate the power of leadership, public-private partnerships, and decisive intentionality and action. I particularly appreciated the Copenhagen smart public-private partnership case study from a country worth getting inspired from. Copenhagen PPP model could inspire a long-term solution to Washington Metrorail funding, along with Japan’s rail/metro example of a PPP transit authority that not only does not rely on any government subsidies, it turns a profit as well.Chapter TEN – Toward a Nation of Problem-Solvers, of The New Localism is one of my favorites, with its arguments for leaders and leadership, problem-solving and call to action. We need schools and programs for generalists, urban problem-solvers and leaders, and I have no doubt that Bruce’s affiliation with the London School of Economics Cities international education program, and his European experience can make a significant difference in the circuitous trajectory of ideas, and can make a key contribution to a comprehensive, real world, networked and hands-on, project-based curriculum for urban problem-solvers and leaders.Inspired ideas? The online Portion of this book is awesome, lots of great questions and they line up well with all of the NCLEX review that I've done, there's multiple test modes and you can select the type of questions you get from a simple interface. That being said, the book is useless. You basically have to fold the pages in half in order to not see the answers, unless you have some crazy visual trick for completely blocking out half of your line of site (covering one eye aint gonna cut it). So here you are with a flimsy paper textbook, trying to hold it open when folding the page one way for 2 questions and then folding it the other way for the next 2, maybe trying to put a piece of paper down fast enough to actually block out the answers before you see them. You end up focusing more attention on using the book than actually studying the information in the book.Also, if you plan to study on a mobile device, don't buy this book. The web interface doesn't translate well to smaller screens, although it's very functional and has great information, it appears to be quite dated. The other reason for not purchasing it for a mobile device is that there is an app out there that the publisher doesn't appear to actually be the producer of, but they have licensed their questions to, the app costs the same as the book, but the book DOES NOT come with access to the app. So if you want access to the questions from mobile and that will be your primary study platform I would highly recommend going to the play store and looking for it (the picture of the cover will be the same as the one on this page).

Lumiere Autochrome images are not well-known, particularly in the U.S. The Lumiere Brothers are better known for their ground-breaking motion photography. They got out of that business fairly early on to concentrate on their color photo process. Complicated and a bit fussy processing created magical images that are wonderfully reproduced in this book. The history and detailed description of the process make for an fascinating tale of creativity in the industrial and fine arts. The authors are to be commended for the completeness and readability of the book. But then again, you could be pulled in by the the photos, alone.

A very informative book on the origin and genesis of the autochrome, wonderfully documented and with many exceptional photographs and autochrome reproductions. For those who seek a grounding in color photography, this is your book!

Kids and zombies are a terrible combination. Everyone knows that. This story plows into the topic head-on and spares no details. As a parent, I was deeply upset by a lot of what these kids had to endure, but I found myself rooting for them and feeling proud right alongside them as they survived and accomplished things that would reduce most sane adults to gibbering puddles.The kids read as realistic to me for the most part. They weren't precious and the story didn't sugar-coat anything for them or the reader. Letitia is my hero.I didn't find either of the rape scenes necessary, but they were handled better than some I've seen.Excellent piece of survival horror that pushed past the usual limits of the genre, would recommend to anyone who loves a good zombie survival story. Fellow parents may feel the need to hug their own little ones a lot after reading. I know I will.

Mr. Williams, I have read a lot of horror books in the zombie genre. I can honestly say that this book was the best! Not one of the best, but, the best! Looking at this from a child's view made it hard to put it away to go about everyday life. I could not put it down. You have done an excellent job in writing this book. After this review, I will be checking out the other books on your list. What I also want to know is, will there be a sequel to this one? I would love a sequel. Even though I am somewhat new to Zombie Lit, I have read quite a few excellent examples but never have I read one that was so captivatingly original as this. The tag line THE WALKING DEAD MEETS LORD OF THE FLIES is very accurate. Imagine a group of 5 year olds who can handle an ax, gun or stake better than the neon crayons that they love so well and their 9 year old leader who seems to have read THE ART OF WAR while still floating in the womb. They are endearing and terrifying little killing machines far wiser, more efficient and much braver than any hero in any zombie or fictional book that I have ever read! Bless their innocently twisted hearts, they really are the little engine that could!Bravo Mr. Williams!

Wow! A Zombie Apocalypse as seen through the eyes of a young black child. Who would have thunk it? And if you think this is your average light-hearted YA dystopian thriller keep it moving. Because this book is not for the faint of heart. What these children have to endure, to survive after civilization collapses and adults turn on each other is horrifying. This book had me to the point where I could not literally put it down because I wanted to see what happened next to Letitia and her young charges. Some of the passages are so haunting that they will stay with you for days. You will find yourself still rooting for the kids although they lost their humanity in their struggle for survival and the only kid ‘like’ about them is their age. The author does a great job of showing the devolution of the human soul when it’s constantly faced with zombies and other humans that are worse than zombies. The ending leads one to believe there might be sequel coming and I for one hope so.

Very well written, and not your usual zombie story. Don't look for the men in the white hats to come save the day - they aren't in this book. The characters became real people to me. I recommend this book highly. Readers who would not normally pick up a fantasy or horror book will still find the portrayal of humans in a crisis compelling.

If you like horror and you’re looking for something new, this is undoubtedly it. I applaud Williams for the excellent new spin he’s put on the zombie genre. Well-written; the kind of writing that doesn't draw attention to itself. I read the whole thing in one slow workday. It's a cross between Hunger Games/Lord of the Flies and Zombieland/World War Z. I've been recommending it to all my bookworm friends, as well as the ones that only read thrillers.

I don't much care for zombie stories but just finished reading this one. I keep thinking if Letitia hadn't had her life interrupted by the zombie apocalypse, she would have made an outstanding inner-city middle school English teacher and then eventually a principal? Great character development, plausible (for zombies, anyway!) situations. Makes me want to make sure these kids get to grow up.
