Interesting book. Not sure I agree with everything he said but it was a good read and made me consider other perspectives

Well written, readable and thought provoking book with a vague nondescript title. The scope defies a short synopsis. I enjoyed it and found it hard to put down. The core concept behind Einstein’s Theory of Relativity is that there was no single perspective that can be considered correct or true. Our knowledge of our subject is dependent on the perspective we take. John Higgs extends that thought to the explain the changes seen in the 20th century in art, politics, psychology, philosophy, quantum mechanics, physics, politics, culture, the internet and a bit more.

Fantastic book filled with interesting facts all weaved into engaging storytelling. This was a pageturner and I can't wait to jump into it again.

Thought provokingAny reader will find points to ponder especially the comparison between popular musicModernisnPost moderismAnd more

Omphalos is my new word gained from this book...well executed thesis....mix of new hybrid philosophy and derived perspectives from history

As a history lover this book is a gem and lots of fun!

An original approach to understand XX century events that enlight XXI social behaviour. As a bonus track is also funny and well written.Excellent reading.

For me this was a new take on the history of the 20th Century making many interesting connections between events and intellectual advances that were new and novel.

Good course if you're looking to learn how to sight read music. Less so if you want to understand how to play. Having the audio download is very helpful, but the MP3 (and Midi) files have a lot of back-up instruments that could confuse students. With the Midi, you can isolate just the student piano part and isolate the right hand and the left hand separately and cut out all the tambourines etc. etc. that may be confusing. Listening to the isolated Midi seems to help learn the songs and get the timings right.

I wouldn't use anything else. I went to the music store, looked through about 14 different kinds of beginner music teaching programs. Then I bought about 4 of them, and this was the clear winner by a mile. We're into the 3rd book and I'm very pleased. Teaches enough without being overwhelming. Songs are accessible to all ages, and my 8 year old is as engaged with the books as I am. We're both learning to play piano, and I suppose that's good enough for me! Oh - be sure and get the CDs if you are learning from scratch. Knowing how it's supposed to sound makes a big difference.PS - Very occasionally I have to call my mom and ask her what the book means by something, as it assumes some more knowlege than I have. Having a person who knows how to play, that you can consult every once in a while, will make the process a breeze.

i like the book. My 5-6 yrs old finished their book 1 so we got the book two. It includes some chopin and bach pieces which are very nice. One disappointmentis the CD. I was expecting it to be played with piano but it is not. It is like listening to an orchestra or other types. That will get u familar with the melody but not able to compare how u actually play the piano.

John Thompson's methods are CLASSIC and have withstood the test of time. Used my very first book in 1968 and recently purchased the series to teach my granddaughter how to play piano. BEST piano course books out there.

It is never to late to pick up these books we used as a child and study and learn ALL the things that keeps us from enjoying the piano.I was too busy being a tom boy when I could have been studying and learning all the things that are on the "ground level".SO I never have learned to "enjoy" my piano.Going back and reviewing the first grade book I had and then I was ready for the second grade. At 63 I am getting more enjoyment from my piano. The "John Thompsom" series are recognized and promoted by most music teachers. The basics are tought so they can be learned. ( with just a little willingness from the student)

I teach piano to my five grandchildren. One has completed this book and another is well into it. I chose the John Thompson book because the melodies are lovely. The instruction progresses carefully, introducing music theory in a gradual and very understandable manner. Each tune builds on what the child has already learned. I am very satisfied with the quality of the instruction. Our eldest granddaughter is now on Book 2. I'll continue to use this series and supplement with other classical pieces.

Great piano book songs and technique

I'm 79 and I learned out of these books. My daughters also and now my grandchildren. Can't begin to tell you how many endless hours of pleasure learning piano has brought me throughout my life. If you're going to learn how to play, this is the best in my opinion.

I am a bit torn when it comes to this book. The writing is absolutely beautiful-- Aspen is truly talented and gifted when it comes to penning words. Her descriptions and observations are so sharp when they're objective that it feels like you're standing there with her. People spend decades honing the kind of voice and talent that rises naturally to her.I started out empathizing a lot with our narrator. Her mother sounds like classic waif-type BPD. My step-mom was a witch type but I understood the stifling, unhealthy pressure that Aspen had to operate under, the damage that a lifetime from birth of being overly cocooned so you doubt your own abilities to an insane degree.I kept turning the pages and looking for growth as she progressed along the trail and I did not find it. I find that disappointing. Aspen apparently found it in herself but what I saw was a woman hungry for male validation seek it until she found it. Did she think she was the only woman on the trail who had been raped or molested? Did she think she was the only one hurting? Her treatment of fellow women on the trail is abhorrent. She reduces them to sexual desirability and then writes off the men who may care for them as "losers", as if everyone out there is slavish to sexual approval the way she is. It's debasing not just to the women who were on the PCT that year, it's debasing to the men who she assumed were unable to care for women outside of their sexual output. Aspen only tentatively grasped at the very end of her journey what a trail family is, but leading up she had nothing but derision, suspicion, and hatred for the women who had their own. The kindest things she said about women on the trail was when she said nothing at all. That is not the fault of those women, but the fault of Aspen.Aspen forgives her family and it was cathartic to see that, but in the end she's still the very self-centered, overly judgmental person she started out as. Expecting everyone to shower her with empathy while providing exactly none. As beautiful as her writing is, I never got the impression that her thoughts ever strayed to the plight, feelings, and being of other people.I am not surprised she was not welcome in the groups that form up along the trail. She started her hike a marred woman and she ended it a marred woman. She tries to present like she healed and came out stronger.. I think that's an enormous lie. Maybe in some ways she came out stronger, but she left the woods the same as she entered-- reliant upon the validation of men no matter how toxic, at the expense of other women. This is a sad book, and it's all the sadder because I don't think the author realizes how sad it is.

As previous reviewers mention, this is not the story of self-discovery and self-reliance that one might hope for. In reading the description, I was hopeful that this would be a memoir about the recovery of a young woman who had experienced a trauma and went to the woods to heal. That isn't really this book. Aspen spends the majority of the text seeking male approval from nearly every man she meets on the trail and desperately looking for validation, which doesn't do much for the "girl power" aspirations of the premise.I want to stress the privilege that Aspen has to experience the PCT the way she does and to survive. Often it is from sheer dumb luck or the benevolence of others, but her primary privilege comes from the generosity and kindness of her parents. Yes, they didn't react in the perfect way when she told them about her rape, but they also spent thousands of dollars on her journey of self-exploration and she appears terribly ungrateful. I also find it frustrating that the end of the text focuses on Aspen changing her relationship with her parents, which is a theme that appears nearly out of thin air. Obviously they are flawed, but by drawing attention to them Aspen only highlights her flaws. This of course brings up the point that Aspen as a character is often deeply unlikable. I began the book feeling empathetic towards her and ended it being annoyed. She makes decisions that put her in danger, speaks down to most of the folks she meets on the trail, and generally doesn't take responsibility for her actions. She places much of the blame for her problems on her mother's coddling and the trauma that she experienced, never taking accountability. As far as character development, there is some, but it wasn't really as dramatic as I would have liked. I was really hoping she would come out the end of the trail as self-reliant, responsible, mature, and aware of her privilege. I desperately wanted her to show her parents some gratitude. Apparently that was too much to ask. Additionally, while there are some moments of beautiful prose, I found the writing to reflect the writer's immaturity and inexperience.

After reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed, I was really looking forward to this book. I was hugely disappointed and found this book to be one of the worst books I have read in years. I am only giving it one star as you can't give zero or even 1/2 stars. How can this book be so awful? A woman goes on a treacherous hike clearly unprepared mentally and physically. Not only that, but she does everything she says she's not going to do! She wants to go to a big pre-hike event - writes about how much she's looking forward to it and then skips it because she meets a random guy she finds cute? This after being raped by a random guy. Seriously!? She wants to hike alone but stays with this boy and another man. The other boy is clearly sexist and racist but never ever says anything to him? Wow. She keeps writing she wants to be alone but is constantly - CONSTANTLY looking for boys (after she dumps boy #1) and sex and people to hike with. Unreal. I understand she went on this hike to sort herself out after the rape, but she continuously put herself in dangerous situations and I found myself not having any sympathy for her whatsoever. You are hiking a serious trail without serious food or a compass? You know you are out of water but don't ask for some from someone who has plenty? This read more like a psychotic's romance adventure novel than a memoir. Please skip this and read Wild instead. Absolutely horrible.

4.5 starsIn "Moneyball," Mr. Lewis wrote about how the super small market Oakland Athletics engaged in the study of market inefficiencies so that they could find undervalued players. One of the key points in the book was how generations of professional scouts and management types made mental misevaluations of players based on their height, weight, looks, and/or unorthodox attributes/skills. It's an excellent look into the information and management revolutions that swept through baseball that led to great teams for the cash-strapped A's, multiple titles for the Red Sox, and an incredible build in Tampa. A harsh reviewer wrote that the book was interesting, but that Lewis was writing about mental mistakes that humans (and experts) make on a regular basis -- and that these mistakes were written about by two Israeli psychologists named Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman. Mr, Lewis is self-assured enough to admit that he had never heard of them before. He spent the next several years learning about them. In addition to their brilliant work, they also have (a) great back stories and (b) a fascinating relationship where despite being married with children, their brains were more attuned and in-sync with each other than anyone else. Mr. Lewis covers all of this in a book that is interesting and an extremely easy read. For a more in-depth look at Tversky and Kahneman's work, one must read Kahneman's "Thinking Fast and Slow," which was published in 2011. It doesn't read as well as Lewis, but the dive into prospect choice theory, hindsight bias and a host of other mental mistakes that these brilliant men identified and named is incredible.

I tend to get excited when the best story tellers write a new book, and when the book covers a topic I have been focused on recently this is even more so. Such was the case when Lewis covered the Nobel Prize winning duo of Daniel (Danny) Kahneman and Amos Tversky, two psychologists who developed much of the base work behind behavioral finance. I also see its roots in Robert Cialdini’s books (Influence, Pre-suasion). While Kahneman (Tversky died in 1996 so did not share in the Nobel) wrote Thinking Fast and Slow to share their life work, here Lewis tries to identify why they worked so well together. In fact I don’t recall him talking about thinking fast (immediate response) or slow (long-term investor) at all. It reads somewhere between biography and non-fiction about behavioral finance. Some of the more interesting thoughts in the book have nothing to do with behavioral finance, but have lots to do with psychology. Lewis discusses Daryl Morey, who I would call a basketball sabermatrician. He has been GM for the Houston Rockets since 2007 using tactics similar to those described for baseball in the book Moneyball (also by Lewis). In this same chapter Lewis provides a definition of a nerd – a person who knows his own mind well enough to mistrust it. This sounds like something Charlie Munger would say (high praise). Both Kahneman and Tversky lived in Israel, where everyone serves a stint in the military, and both saw action in the Six Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973 (when they returned from America to take up arms). Kahneman helped the Israelis design better tools for selecting officers and training pilots. Tversky was a paratrooper. Both were professors at Hebrew University at the beginning of the first war.Our mind tricks us. After the fact, we know exactly why we saw the event coming that no one anticipated (see Taleb’s Black Swan) and surveys weigh more heavily toward events that have recently occurred. The reasons often given relate back to our days as prey on the plains of Africa (thinking fast keeps you alive in that context – you run away from a predator, as fast as you can). One of the ways to catch these inconsistencies is to devise three options, where a person chooses A over B, B over C, and C over A. This violates the law of transitivity, familiar to anyone who has ever studied algebra or logic. Lewis provides many of these examples, as did Kahneman in Thinking Fast and Slow, and I fall for nearly every one. Even after I’ve seen them before (sometimes, occasionally, I remember).K/T developed several heuristics, where laws of chance are replaced by rules of thumb. “We often decide that an outcome is extremely unlikely, or impossible, because we are unable to imagine any chain of events that could cause it to occur. The defect, often, is in our imagination.”• Representativeness – we see a previously developed mental model rather than thinking through the facts as presented (and are generally correct). This creates systematic errors, such as looking at a kid and immediately deciding whether they are athletic. Looking at the negative can help avoid these problems. For example, the WW2 bombs landing in London appeared to target certain areas, but really were random. If you have 23 randomly selected people in a room, the odds are better than half that at least two share a birthday.• Availability – we more easily recall memorable events.• Conditionality – we make contingent assumptions when none are stated. We assume normal operating conditions (e.g., normal distribution, VaR). “…people don’t know what they don’t know, but that they don’t bother to factor their ignorance into their judgments.”• Anchoring (and adjustment) – if you are shown a large (or small) number, for example, then your response is then large (or small).• Simulation – what could happen dominates what is likely to happen – this can lead to analysis paralysis (I find it difficult to overcome this when investing for my personal accounts – it’s hard to pull the trigger).• Recency bias – recent events influence our probability assumptions.• Hindsight bias - once we know how something turns out, our recollection is that we predicted it in advance (similar to Black Swans – Taleb)How do ideas form in our mind? Is it conscious, or indirect? When we study in school, or for a credential, the focus is on repeating the “right” answer. While hard to grade, I’ve always thought it would be better to provide an answer and ask the student to improve it.Who knew that a bad experience could be remembered more fondly if the final part of the event was not so distasteful – the peak-end rule? This was tested using colonoscopies that ended with the medical instruments brought out of the body slowly or quickly. Doing so slowly made it more likely that the person would return for future tests. The risk manager will discover, usually the hard way, that avoiding a risk receives no reward but if you miss a risk then you will get the blame. This is a human bias.Accounting does not consider the impact on the environment, to limited supply, or to emotions. Utility theory overstates the value. Risk aversion is a fee willingly paid to avoid regret. In any case we all prefer to avoid pain more than we want to secure gain. We react more to relative changes than absolute ones, and probability is not straightforward. The benefits of a group often conflict with the benefit to an individual. Antibiotics are such an example. In total, limiting antibiotics is better because viruses have less chance to mutate successfully. For an individual, antibiotics are either useful or neutral. There is no downside to an individual to being treated with antibiotics. One of the fascinating revelations in the book (for me, at least) was the need to invert. “How do you understand memory? You don’t study memory. You study forgetting.” As we study other topics we should look for opportunities to utilize this strategy. While much of the interest in this branch of psychology is applied to investment strategies, K/T worried more about geopolitical biases and the series of avoidable mistakes that could be made by political leaders relying on gut feel. They thought that intelligence reports written as essays should be replaced by probabilities. Telling a story is not helpful in this context, but politicians tend to be afraid of numbers. We have seen evidence of this recently as briefings to the US president are said to be focused on charts and short sound bites. As you read about financial economics, this should not be your first book. I believe it is more useful to someone already familiar with the concepts from other sources. For someone starting out on this topic I personally like Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes and How to Correct Them by Gary Belsky and Thomas Gilovich to start and then Thinking Fast and Slow by Kahneman before reading the Lewis book.

With no doubt, I had great fun reading “The Undoing Project.”I was introduced to the work of Tversky and Kahneman as a college sophomore in 1988 by my teacher, hydrologist Joseph Harrington, who was a great admirer of their ideas. The beauty of what is now called “Prospect Theory” has inevitably stuck with me since. It is only in retrospect that I have come to understand it was radical for its time.So I swallowed whole “Thinking About Thinking” within a week of having read the Michael Lewis review on Bloomberg. And I’ve since really enjoyed the recent near-autobiography of Richard Thaler’s, as well as many of Dan Ariely’s books.Well, you don’t have to believe me on this, but Michael Lewis actually explains the concepts better! No joke, he really does. And he provides an unbelievably deep, personal and sensitive account of the explosive relationship between the two giants. A very believable account too. The research done by Michael Lewis really shows. He’s had phenomenal access too, it seems. And yet, the book does not hang together terribly well. Chapters 1 and 8 should not have made it into the book, they ought to have been relegated to the pages of Vanity Fair, where the author regularly provides fantastic material.More to the point, what we have here is a bunch of chapters that, chronological order notwithstanding, do not constitute a book. The incredible material, the wonderful expositions, the deep insights are all present and correct, but they fail to meld into a narrative. Even the title of the book, much as it has its roots in the work of Tversky and Kahneman, does not do justice to their contribution. It really pains me to say this, especially because the author’s previous effort, “Flash Boys,” was a genuine five-star book. Perhaps that’s the problem. Maybe if I was reading this straight off of “Boomerang” I’d have found it great. As it stands, I’m not sure I could recommend it to the general public. If, on the other hand, you have the remotest interest in Behavioral Economics, you genuinely can’t not read “The Undoing Project” and you are guaranteed to enjoy it.

I just ordered this coloring book and couldn't be happier! I have many coloring books at home, and am so happy to have one that is special and not generic. There is real artistry here! I am just getting started and know I've got hours of fun coming up. Who knew there were so many different kinds of chickens??? And pretty too! So much character :) I looked on the artists instagram site @celeste_collings and pulled up a few images to give me different ideas in coloring, and am totally inspired! I adding them here for your inspiration too. I also like that each coloring image is given it's own page with nothing else on the back. So often I color and find it bled through to the image on the other side. I'm glad I can just color and not worry about that! I have some free time coming up and look forward to diving in and feeling the artist in me come forth in this coloring book :)

Royal Roosters is an especially good coloring book, including an intricacy in design that catches the eye, an imaginative array of these interesting birds, and at times a simplicity through a lone chick with a crown or a fetching rooster facing to the right. The cover is great with a splash of contrasting colors within which a rooster faces left as its eye looks directly at the viewer.

Although I got this for my grand daughter, I am now debating whether to keep it or get another copy for myself! Super fun and intricate drawings. A fabulous distraction from the Orwellian horrors encircling us. This will help to restrain my inner "chicken little". The sky is not falling yet...

Royal Roosters and Chickens is a great coloring book for all ages, young and old. It gives an interesting selection ofRoosters and Chickens to expand your mind and use your talents in making a beautiful page in color to enjoy. I lovethe idea of chickens wearing a crown. You can use your coloring skills and appreciate your finished page with a differentlook and background for your favorite roosters and chickens. A fun and artistic book.

I find the drawings in this coloring book to be nicely detailed, in a very distinctive style and enjoyable to color. The pictures are suitable for framing and I'm looking forward to completing some of them so I can hang them in my craft room.

I have had this coloring book for a few months now and I'm ready to order some markers and start my coloring. I am so excited about my Royal Roosters and Chickens coloring Book from artist Celeste Collings! There is so much detail and once I start adding color to all my chickens and roosters, I too will feel like the creative artist Celeste. To go online and see how Celeste uses the different colors and shades in the spaces was fascinating! Each rooster and chicken was unique. Some comical and others so real to life. Such a fun coloring book!Thank you Celeste for paying attention to detail! Love it!

I found this coloring book authentic, visually engaging, and am sharing it with my friends and students. The book celebrates the Year of the Rooster for the Chinese New Year, opening up another culture, a very rich and historically relevant culture, for our attention. This is one of the most unique coloring books I have come across, and I can strongly recommend it for its beauty, creativity, and opportunity to see the world through another culture.Laura Little

I loved it! So creative with the chickens and roosters! Love the Eiffel Tower one! Very talented artist who pays attention to detail.

Like Alex's mother, I am a Mensan and an experienced climber. In fact, I run the Mensa Climbing Group in Kansas City. And like Alex (at least in the beginning), I am a gym climber. But unlike Alex, I don't climb 5.14d routes. My maximum is 5.12a, and that's top-roped on a fairly short pitch. He would also smoke me on bouldering problems (V7 is my current max). This book is very well-written, and Mark Synnott clearly understands climbing. He shared some insights that were new for me, and I appreciate that. Synnott seems to take a long time after Chapter One to get to the actual climb up El Capitan or to much about Alex Honnold at all. For most other kinds of books, I would consider this a defect. But this book is different. First, all that prelude is just darn good reading. It also has strategic value in understanding Alex Honnold, especially in relation to other elite climbers. The insight you get into other climbers, including the author, allows you to correctly place Alex in the pantheon of climbers. Without that background, it would be hard for most readers to understand just how spectacular this feat was.Second, I believe the primary audience for this book is climbers. Synnott spends little time explaining climbing, and that's probably a good thing. The book is already long due to all that prelude, no sense in making it tedious too. But isn't the length a problem? I would say not for a climber. A key characteristic of climbing is it is a sport of intense focus and concentration. Another characteristic is it is extremely hard to become proficient in climbing. It takes hundreds of hours of practice to become proficient enough to smoothly send 5.10 routes or V3 problems. Flailing up (and/or across) the wall or muscling your way through the problem does not constitute climbing. It takes dozens or maybe even hundreds more to move from5.10 to 5.11 and from V3 to V4.I see a huge drop-off at V4. Probably only 20% of the people who can consistently send V4 problems can send a V5, and maybe 20% of those can send V6. I climb V7 now, and though I climb at 4 different gyms I know very few people who climb V9 or above. The last time I top-roped, the hardest problem set at that gym was a 5.12a (there were two of them). So if you're writing a book whose target demographic is people who are known for intense concentration and for putting in hundreds of hours to develop their climbing skills, you had better not write a thin puff piece. Now that I have covered what may be a common complaint about this book, let me cover what is the least common complaint about any book. Like the other Mark, I am a professional writer. Who better to judge what other people write? I often cringe at grammatical gaffes, because they are so common. They just don't show up in this book. It seems the other Mark pays as much attention to getting writing right as he does to getting climbing right. As we climbers say when someone does a gnarly move well, "Nice!"On to some particulars about the book's content. It runs 403 pages (in the pre-release proof copy I have), including the Prologue (a really good read), Author's Note, and Acknowledgements.Sometimes movies are structured with an opening scene in which we see the hero in predicament. Then there's some text that says "One week ago" or something like that, and a story unfolds from there. We get back to the opening scene, after which the story picks up where we first came in and the hero solves the dilemma. This book is structured like that. Chapters Two through Five provide an important, and well-told, back story.Part One, "Youth," consists of four chapters. Chapter One is half a dozen pages long, and it sets the stage for the titular free solo climb that is about to happen. Then Chapter Two takes us back to Synnod's beginning as a climber.Part Two, "The Professional World," consists of four chapters. In Chapter Five, we read about the elite climber Alex Lowe and Synnott's adventures with him. We also read about Lowe's death. In Chapter Six, we catch up with Alex Honnold again but we're not picking up where we left off with Chapter One (that will come later). An important dynamic here is Honnold chides Synnott for being too cautious, teasingly calling him "Mr. Safety."Part Three, "Topping Out," consists of four chapters. Now that we have gotten to know Alex better via the previous three chapters, we find in Chapter Nine there is serious exploration into how he controls his fear when climbing. This includes a scan of his amygdala, and an analysis of the results. And Part Three includes the final chapter, in which we read about various moments of the historic climb.I found this book deeply entertaining and informative. I hope it inspires more people to take up climbing. The sport has come a long way from its renegade days when Synnott got started. With climbing gyms popping up all over the country, there is plenty of opportunity for people to take up this demanding sport and fit their climbing into a normal life and normal schedule. It isn't necessary to do dangerous climbing to enjoy climbing. The reportable accident rate among USA climbing gyms is 0.07 per 1,000 visitor hours. Compare that to the 2.3 injuries per 1,000 visitor hours of cross-fit gyms. Climbing is almost 3300% safer! In fact, serious accidents in climbing gyms happen less often than falls while hill walking. And of course, climbing is far safer than texting while driving.People have asked me if I'm content to limit myself to gym climbing, and sometimes say, "Are you going to do real climbing some day?" In answer, I send them to my YouTube channel (search "Mark Lamendola climbing) and encourage them to visit a gym and try one of those. Honnold learned climbing at climbing gyms, not because it is fake and easy in those settings but because it is hard and in a controlled environment. Where he took it from there is amazing.New climbers are challenged by a 5.6, breathing hard and finding their arms pumped out after only one climb. That's on a fairly short pitch, maybe 20 or 30 feet. The ceiling for most "weekend warrior" climbers seems to be about 5.10b. Climbing several long pitches back to back when they are as hard as 5.14d is superhuman, and that's what I want people to understand about this achievement. It was so far beyond the abilities of most climbers, it's awe-inspiring.Thanks, Mark Synnott, for this book.

It’s pretty dang awesome. Highly recommended. Alex Honnold, the world’s greatest climber, went 3000 feet up shear mountain face, alone with no ropes. An achievement so incredible that the New York Times called it “one of the great athletic feats of any kind, ever.” And since free solo climbing involves life and death risk management at altitude, we all can both marvel and learn along the way.Writing about his friend Dean Potter’s death flying a wingsuit down a mountain, Alex says:“No one spends 20 years at the cutting edge of their sport by being an adrenaline junkie all the time. Most people had only seen his climbing and flying through short YouTube videos and never got a glimpse of the years of training behind them. Dean actually had a thoughtful and conservative approach, building up to things slowly over time as he became physically and psychologically prepared.”Good stuff. But what’s great about this book is most of it shows us this process, rather than being Alex safety lectures. It’s written by his friend and climbing companion, an insider who has climbed El Cap over 20 times, who also has written for magazines like National Geographic, Climbing, Skiing, Outside, etc. Smooth easy style. It goes deeper. For example, on risk, some argue that the risks of wingsuit flying or free solo climbing are immoral. But Alex saw these people as hypocrites because many of them risked their own lives on a daily basis by sitting on the couch eating potato chips:“I was 19 when my father died from a heart attack. He was a 55-year-old college professor and had led what was by all appearances a risk-free life. But he was overweight, and heart disease runs in our family. No matter the risks we take, we always consider the end to be too soon even though in life more than anything else quality should be more important than quantity.”In addition to his life, and his life climbing, this smart readable book covers some bigger ideas. What is climbing? Is Alex’s brain not right? Does social media and GoPro help or hinder? And is there Zen at the top of mountains? It covers Alex’s history, his girlfriend, his other climbs. It’s not too technical, but enough that we get the real feeling of modern climbing techniques. It covers his first attempt at El Cap, and the later victorious assent, four hours of life-and-death flow. It cycles back to the what is climbing question. Or rather why?“My own awareness of being on a stage … precluded the Zen I had always found in climbing.”For such an ambitious book of climbing, climbing ethos, and insight into climbings greatest triumph, it's quite, well, grounded. Readable. Relatable. Hope this review helps you.
