Review

"One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 1999""Americans feel ashamed about so-called consumption debt, writes Mr. Calder in prose that's as clear as a bell, because they're psychologically frozen in a 100-year-old mindset. . . . Mr. Calder's argument is so deliciously seditious that you have to wonder: What's wrong with this picture? . . . Mr. Calder's sections on pawnbrokers, door-to-door peddlers and small lenders are worth the price of admission alone."---Cynthia Crossen, The Wall Street Journal"Contrary to those who piously and ahistorically rail against consumer debt as a modern fall from grace, Calder takes a much more nuanced and interesting view. [He] is to be commended for showing us the other side." (Reason)"In a surprisingly lively book about a potentially dreary subject, Calder argues that debt is as American as apple pie and that consumer borrowing has been an important engine of economic growth."---Charles Stein, The Boston Globe"A broadly researched book on the history of US consumer credit that breaks new ground and revises prevailing views. . . . This finely written volume is a major contribution." (Choice)"Those who complain that the debt represents an abandonment of thrift and a growing lack of willingness to defer gratification are wrong, claims Calder. . . . [He] makes the case that today's 'culture of consumption' arose as much from the availability of credit as from the efforts of advertisers and marketers." (Booklist)"Calder is at his best . . . drawing extensively on anecdotal and literary evidence to create a lively narrative." (Publishers Weekly (starred review))"There was never a golden age when everybody paid cash. . . . Moreover, Calder's research convinced him that, far from creating a nation of hedonistic wastrels, consumer credit's rigorous system of monthly payments imposes a puritanical discipline of hard work and thrift." (The New Yorker)"A colorful narrative style and clear, strong arguments will help readers understand this aspect of American social and economic life." (Library Journal)"Calder's work greatly increases our understanding of the rise of consumer culture in America."---Jonathan Silva, The Historian

"At last--an accessible and scholarly history of the American consumer's best friend and worst enemy."--James Grant, author of Money of the Mind and editor of Grant's Interest Rate Observer"Lendol Calder is the first scholar in the field of modern U.S. social history to describe and analyze the century-long (1820s through 1920s) evolution of the incidence of debt, the availability of credit, and the prevailing attitudes toward both, as keystones to understanding twentieth-century changes in U.S. consumer cultureÖ. The quality of writing in the book is exceptional."--Otis A. Pease, University of Washington"Calder has produced a book that will not only add to what we know about 'consumer culture,' but will also force business historians to rethink the relative importance to the rise of consumerism of management innovations and advertising. Calder shows clearly that there is a third source of consumerism: installment credit."--William R. Childs, Ohio State University

wonderfully written and researched history of personal finance/consumer credit in the U.S. Author does not appear to have any particular political axe to grind. It is amazing to see the history recorded in this book being repeated today. Would highly recommend this book to anyone attempting to make sense of the progressive movement's regulationof consumer financial products.

Good!

Positive experience.

Calder brings up a lot interesting developments surrounding the growth of consumer credit, which can easily draw parallels to cirticisms of modern day institutions such as social networks (we're loosing "real" social contact! Not really, we're just changing how we make it). The price was hefty, however, and it's pretty borning to slug through.

Something there is that does not like a consumer loan. Indeed, for a long time the idea of such credit created a sensation of discomfort, insecurity and even shame. Americans harbored a natural hostility to such practices since they tend to ensnare the buyer into schemes that are onerous. Being in debt had the stigma of indicating a lack of self-restraint and character. This attitude toward debt long dominated. But, beginning in the early twentieth century, popular resistance to consumer credit gradually diminished. Lendol Calder's Financing the American Dream: A Cultural History of Consumer Credit is a fascinating chronicle of how this hostility was overcome. His analysis covering the late-nineteenth century to the Great Depression provides insight into a consumer culture that has led us to the present plight of an economy built upon and sustained by debt.It is a story that is not only about loans but about money, social attitudes and relationships. With the Industrial Revolution, the concept of money itself evolved. The world moved from a more personal relationship-based economy to today's impersonal money economy. Banking shifted from a conservative commercial institution catering to industry to a more consumer-oriented business dedicated to financing the American Dream. Government's role increased as it became involved in expanding and guaranteeing money supply and offering its own credit schemes. While the scenario was complex, there was one simple catalyst that brought about this transformation. This was the development of the installment method of financing. Calder claims that "The installment plan was to consumer credit what the moving assembly line was to the automobile industry. Without it, today's trillion dollar [now $13 trillion] consumer credit industry would be inconceivable."Starting with sewing machines, farm machinery and automobiles, the practice soon embraced almost every line of purchase including clothing. It created the tension of providing instant gratification while imposing severe discipline upon the worker now saddled with regular monthly payments. In this way, consumer debt became a permanent fixture if not an entitlement in American society. If installment buying was the instrument, credit marketing was the process which changed the mentality of thrifty Americans and secured the acceptance of consumer credit. Much more important than engineering a financial infrastructure, it became necessary to "sanitize" the concept of debt itself as a positive value for progress and society.Amply documented in Calder's narrative, credit marketers soon found ways of reassuring the public that consumer debt was positive. The small-loan lenders were no longer "loan sharks" but found new identities as "financial advisors," "financial doctors," or "consumer counselors." Even the installment plan itself underwent a facelift as they came to be called "budget plans," "club plans," `thrift accounts," or "preferred buyer plans." These and other subterfuges gradually turned the tide that paved the way for the credit wave of the future that continues to the present.Lendol Calder's clear and compelling arguments do much to explain how consumer credit became part of American culture. By extrapolating upon his findings, readers can also gain insight as to the present crisis and the future. The present explosive expansion of credit merely intensifies the earlier processes of gratification and obligation. Calder says it can be best "summed up in a single word: more."Today's credit-card economy runs on "more." There are more consumer goods, more credit devices, more profits, easier and longer terms--and more undisciplined consumers. On the surface, the quest for more happiness in consumer paradise seems to be intact although maxed out and overextended. But under the surface, this is anxiety. From the frenetic intemperance by which consumer credit has expanded, there comes a different kind of "more." There is more instability, more stress, more future debt burden--and perhaps more unhappiness. Such sobering perspectives invite reflection on the future of the American dream bought on an installment plan.John Horvat IIAuthor of Return to Order: From a Frenzied Economy to an Organic Christian Society--Where We’ve Been, How We Got Here, and Where We Need to Go

Calder book is an appealing read. I must agree with other reviews that this is usually not a very interesting subject, finance and credit, but Calder presents it in an interesting matter that can be quite witty at times. The reader will see how Victorian money management ideas of the past were largely accepted passively by most but only actually followed by few. Credit has existed since before this countries foundation argues Calder and he details the progression of credit systems to present times.

I used Calder's book in one of my History courses and found it to be thorough, even-handed and timely. Calder's prose style is remarkably engaging; students had no trouble navigating the text and discerning the major points. It's a gripping read, but also tremendously informative as well. If you have time to read only one book on the development of consumerism and consumer values, this is it. In fact, I have read few books that I consider a better "window" on the shaping of modern American culture.

Calder covers what can be a dry subject in an interesting manner. He follows the history of consumer credit from the early 19th century up to the period of the New Deal. The book discusses the evolving attitudes toward credit and debt and the products that eventually revolutionized the system of consumer credit. It is well documented and illustrated. A surprisingly good read for what can be a boring subject.

A delightful read for anyone who is courageous enough to question orthodoxy-- not in the narcissistic, jejune, social media ad hominem way-- but intelligently, supported by reason and knowledge of history. His prose in this little book can be remarkably elegant, and also downright hilarious:"A few years ago, I decided in my own mind that the then-president [Bill Clinton] was even more of a crook and a liar than his most dogmatic ideological opponents had claimed.""Some people can't bear solitude, let alone the idea that the heavens are empty and that we do not even succeed in troubling their deafness with our bootless cries [...] the concept of loneliness and exile and self-sufficiency continually bucks me up."The two examples above show why he was truly a contrarian: Hitchens went after the cultural elite (Left) as well as the religious (Right). Thus, everyone listened to him, and everyone disagreed with him on something. I miss the guy's writing terribly, and love to go back to this book and read his eloquence and humor. These days, we all have our own little bubbles in which we reside, be that the ivory tower or talk radio, but Hitchens (1949-2011) was everywhere, ready to debate. Always ready. In "Letters to a Young Contrarian," the author forms an intimate bond with the reader, discussing life in the most entertaining and substantive way. What a charming, intelligent writer. I recommend this book for anyone, regardless of their age.

So far, I love this book. I highly recommend it for anyone struggling with being truly authentic and stead fast in their beliefs. More than that, 'Letters to a Young Contrarian' keenly and sharply addresses the need to belong and the fear of abandonment when stepping forward against all reason of the masses. I will keep this book close at hand to remind me that one person, even one thought made visible can make a difference despite others indifference or naysayer's.His vocabulary is audacious. For those looking to expand their own vocabulary and writing skills Hitchens' offers the reader a wonderful opportunity to have a real dictionary in hand and discover the joy of exposition.Thank you to my nephew, Shane who has shared his fondness for reading with me.

An outstanding introduction to not only Hitchens but an entire realm of thought. Absolutely changed the way I think about just about everything. Don't be fooled by the title. One that, apparently, Hitchens himself did not particularly like. This book can, and should, be read by people of all ages. We all can learn a little something from it. It's a quick read and well worth going over a few times. Hitch had a huge number of books published, most are rather focused on particular subjects. Start with this one to get a broad understanding on almost all of them. Then, take it from there, and enjoy.

I loved this book. Although I have not read a book by Christopher Hitchens that I did not like. While he is not everyone's cup of tea, it's pretty hard to find a reasoned argument against his positions that sticks. I couldn't put the book down. Finished it in two days and then immediately started another one of his books. His use of language and prose is quite enchanting and there's not a wasted word.

I have learned a great deal from reading Christopher Hitchens. I would go so far as to say that psychologically reading Mr. Hitchens has helped make me saner, and helped me heal from the wounds of co-dependency. It is ironic that a man who was, essentially, a practicing and unapologetic alcoholic helped me heal from co-dependency, but there it is. Hitch-22: A Memoir perhaps shows why Hitchens was able to perform this service for so many of us.As other reviewers have noted, the best thing we can do is to live "as if." To my mind, this is the most important message of this very fine book. We need to live "as if" repression did not exit. We need to live "as if" the thought of us saying "no" to something, or telling the truth and not lying, or actually being honest about our feelings, did not terrify us.Almost as important as the above is this: if we care about civility and irenic discourse, then we darn well better also be comfortable with "combativity" and argument. The center is mealy mouthed more often than not, and if we are afraid to wade in and make a strong argument and defend it, then the center will be defined without our input, and the world may well be a poorer place for it. Of course, the danger here is we make our argument incompetently and look the fool. Therefore, it is also incredibly important to be extremely well read, have one's position clearly thought out, and be able to articulate it clearly. Hitchens, even drunk, seemed to have a preternatural ability to have virtually every text he had ever read at his fingertips, and he wasn't afraid to let you know what he thought no matter the consequences, and his position seems to emerge, whole, thought out, and defensible, without any effort. In this sense he was almost a journalistic version of Mozart. And we can also not be afraid, even as we live "as if," to change our minds if presented with new information that requires us to. As the bumper sticker says: "if you can't change your mind, are you sure you still have one?" Hitch's transformation from full out critic of George W. Bush and everything he stood for to supporter of much of what President Bush was doing speaks to the ability to change one's mind, and to be a cogent thinker. "A foolish consistency is a hobgoblin of little minds..." or something like that. Hitch did not have a little mind.I love Hitchens because he was one of the few modern thinkers who was not a mealy mouthed relativist. This man (unlike his colleague Dawkins) was philosophically and historically highly literate, and reading him was much more challenging as a result. Hitch was an absolutist, and a historian, and a journalist, and this made him very formidable and impressive. That, and he had great humanity made him downright lovable. He was luminous, and we are all poorer for the fact that he no longer walks on our earth.Of course, his work is still with us. Hitchens had the writing and thinking ability of a G.K. Chesterton, or more appropriately, a George Bernard Shaw, and he will be remembered as long and as fondly by many. This is a wonderful book, that should be read widely. Many would profit from the wisdom contained in these pages.

The 75 Hr. Course was unbelievably boring, needless to say I barely retained anything at all from it. Bought this book after finishing the course online, it was very helpful, learned more from the book than I did from that course. If you're like me who literally got very little at best out of the 75 hr course, you will need more than this book though, not much more but more. Google NY Realty exams, there's a post by some girl who took the test in 2011 or so, those questions were tremendously helpful, the exact questions were on my exam. I give this book 4 Stars because the claim is a bit of an exaggeration that to read this and pass the first time. I passed my school test and state exam both the first time, but it's not just because of this book, it's the combination of this and the other resources I mentioned, nonetheless the book is very good and I recommend it. Took and passed my exam on 07/12/17 in NYC.

This book is not a study guide. It is hastily put together with many typos and very little information. It's 250 pages. The first fifth is some study info. 3/5 is just exam questions + answers and the remaining fifth is a glossary. This book barely scratches the surface of the amount of info you're required to know and is basically useless. You'll need to look elsewhere for a study guide, this is not it.

It was great!

Besides the typo on the spine of the book 🤦🏼‍♀️ There's ZERO explanations on types of loans or on any mortgages that you need to know for the NYS test. Not enough pages to write notes either. Too much work to cross reference from the state textbook. Not worth the buy.

This book is really amazing and useful book. I just love this book. Its really helpful for the real estate to learn quickly. Highly recommended.

nice book to review the RE lessons

One of my friends recommend this book and she said that it is a very helpful book to get a high grade to the exam for real estate. I read it! Wow, it's immensely helpful. I can say that "NICE JOB AUTHOR" for writing this kind of book that helps a lot of people who are interested in REAL ESTATE.

This is a good and and informative guide for those aiming to pass the New York Real estate examination. The author has made it easy for beginners to understand the guidelines and things that should be done to succeed.

Review

Praise for The Unlikely Thru-Hiker "Even for a skilled hiker, a twenty-two hundred mile thru-hike is challenging, so for Derick much can and will go wrong on the Appalachian Trail. Yet, with humor, his story takes us into a world where his lack of AT knowledge, his unique perspective and his appearance, open the minds and hearts of those he encounters along the way. Change has come and the AT will never be the same again... and neither will this unlikely thru-hiker."--Jennifer Pharr Davis, author of Becoming Odyssa & The Pursuit of Endurance"Derick Lugo's description of his Appalachian Trail thru-hike is a highly readable, personal, humorous and insightful account of his nearly 2,200 mile journey from Georgia to Maine. His fellow hikers and companions are brought to life beautifully by the author's candor and introspective commentary. It is one of the very best of the many A.T. thru-hike books." --Ron Tipton, former President/CEO of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and a '78 thru-hiker

saved me grief and kept me from causing others grief. Dare to Lead is for everyone, not just professional leaders, because everything in this book applies to families and other groups. As Brené states, “I define a leader as anyone who takes responsibility for finding the potential in people and processes, and who has the courage to develop that potential.” In fact, Dare to Lead would be a wonderful resource or curriculum for a required high school class. There is SO much incredible insight, wisdom, and advice that my brain is tired, and it’s been havoc on my tear ducts multiple times. We all belong to groups, whether it’s at work, in social and community groups or clubs, etc., as members or leaders. And while this book is primarily aimed at leaders in the workplace, any group member would benefit from this knowledge and advice. Over the years, my groups have included my family of origin, my family from marriage, educational groups, event groups, competitive groups, etc. I have always been a good worker, boss, teacher, and leader of different groups. But “good” leaves a lot of leeway for the fact that a few times I have really screwed up in the very ways that Brené discusses. I look back and there were times that my perfectionism, my black-and-white rule-following, and my tendency to sometimes rush to judgement really hurt people. Not to mention, my shame affected my leadership. As I read Dare to Lead, I kept flashing to situations in my past and a couple of people I would really like to go back apologize to, one lady in particular. (Well, really, I want to travel back in time and not screw up to begin with, but sadly that’s just a fantasy.) A bit of background: I was raised in a very abusive family, physically and emotionally. My family of origin’s modus operandi was to judge, criticize, and belittle each member constantly. Mistakes and weaknesses were never forgiven, but held up, mocked, and laughed about over and over, on top of physical and emotional abuse.Armed with self-help books (yes, my family mocks my reliance on self-help books) and therapy, I determined to leave all that behind and become a “normal” person very different from my parents. But sometimes that background messes with my current life. (As Brené says: “What’s perhaps most insidious in power over dynamics is that those who are powerless typically repeat the same behavior when the tables are turned and they are promoted into power.” I would add, sometimes against our best intentions.)There was a time that my insecurity in running a large group led me to take a friend’s reported actions as betrayal. The resulting emotional backlash caused me to handle the situation so badly that I ended up being judgmental and majorly unkind to my friend to such a degree that the title “friend” no longer applies. I should have known better; I should have acted better. It wasn’t just that I hurt my reputation, interfered with how well the group was functioning, looked unprofessional to a hosting facility… The absolutely worst part was that I hurt another person - an innocent person. I broke every tenet I had set for my life because I didn’t take the time to step back and to be a good leader; I just reacted. I went right into shame and blame because I had such an inner fear of being disrespected and betrayed. As a consequence, I disrespected and betrayed my friend by treating her unkindly. In addition, I almost shut down a service that was helping over 1,000 families over the incident. I let fear rule my actions (“I don’t do vulnerability”) and cut my helpers loose (“I can go it alone”). I curtailed offerings and cancelled events. I had listened to and internalized comments from critics as they touched upon the worthlessness instilled by my parents and siblings. (Many people are eager to criticize, and it takes wisdom and practice to let go of unhelpful criticism and use the helpful input for growth.) My actions influenced some members to take sides in a group that shouldn’t have had “sides.” (“Increased polarization, rampant dehumanization of people who are different from us, and our growing inability to ditch the echo chambers for real critical thinking.”) After working alone for another year or so, I handed off the group to a team of ladies that I knew would do a better job than I was doing.I believe if I had read Dare to Lead first, I would have had the tools in place to respond appropriately in a way that would have fostered group cohesion, eliminated problems, and just generally been a better leader for my group. In addition, I ponder Brené’s adage that the “courage to be vulnerable is not about winning or losing, it’s about the courage to show up when you can’t predict or control the outcome.” I’ve considered going back and apologizing to my ex-friend many times, but I’ve always been afraid that it would simply set off more negativity. But it was my lack of judgement and responding with emotions from my past that caused the rift, and I’d like her to know that I take full responsibility for that. Is it too late to go back and tell this person how badly I feel about being a leader who truly mishandled the situation? Would it make a difference to her?I plan to reread this life-changing book with my husband and daughter, both IT professionals, so they can learn from it while I benefit from the review. Dare to Lead contains wisdom to guide leaders who want to nurture safe and effective work groups. It can also benefit leaders and members of any other groups or teams, whether for a sport, church, political group, competitive team, etc. Dare to Lead would also be a great resource for members to use to kindly hold leaders accountable. There is no downside to taking this entire book in as heart knowledge and incorporating it into our lives. And the upside is that we will not only improve the quality of our own lives, but the lives of those we interact with.Highly recommended for the universe at large. This is the first book I’ve read by Brené Brown; I’ll definitely be reading more!Edited for clarity.

Recommend that you dog-ear pages 70, 76, and 77. Brene Brown excels once again and goes further with her research and writing to describe behaviors and emotions that we've all felt. More importantly, she gives us constructive actions we can take to live and work more effectively and wholeheartedly.Page 70 sums up the journey her book will take you on should you chose to go. It reads, "Leaders must either invest a reasonable amount of time attending to fears and feelings, or squander an unreasonable amount of time trying to manage ineffective and unproductive behavior."Pages 76 and 77 give you sixteen specific examples of Armored Leadership and Daring Leadership. You'll recognize them immediately. And you will be able to call out the behaviors that are holding you back or propelling you forward. On subsequent pages she unpacks the examples so that we can put the words to work for ourselves and our colleagues.

If you have read her other books, there is no need to read this one. It is more of the same but slanted to the business audience around leadership. One of the most useless leadership book I have ever read. I note the first quote is from Sheryl Sandberg--I would bet she never read the book, just gave a quote. The book is well written and some decent stories but no different than any other business book that is filled with stories of different leaders. I would say this book will be liked by her fans, others will find it a waste.

I have loved Brene's previous books. She is a great writer and I appreciate how well rounded her ideas are. They are applicable in so many avenues of life. While I understand this book was about "daring" to lead, I was disappointed that this book had a narrow scope of management in slower paced environments (I work in a tech company - extending timelines, circling back, etc. are not luxuries I can use in my day to day). Additionally, I hoped this was going to focus on leading and not direct management, as leading comes in so many forms and not always in formal direct ways. Lastly, many of the ideas and stories shared were reused from other books and shaped into the theme of leadership.

I've followed Brene for years and love her work. But this book is a "stream of consciousness" walk through her past work. I was waiting for a new insight but found none after 275 pages. I'd love to get new insights in a more "crisp" format with some "takeaway" value.

This is a spectacular excursion into humane but effective leadership. In her brief bio, it states that Brene Brown has "spent past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame and empathy." Those are not the typical descriptions of bestselling business characteristics. In fact, this book could really be sub-titled,"How to be a better human being and apply your new 'muscles' to the business of leadership." What's fascinating is that the author calls herself a "research professor" with a social work doctorate, and her research has been extensive and varied, from military leaders to teachers. In this regard she has adopted the data-based techniques of Jim Collins, whose "Good to Great" has been the gold standard for many years. But her message is different in that it does not recommend "engineering" innovation, but rather relying on "rumbling with vulnerability," "living into one's values," and having the courage to make decisions even where the outcome may be uncomfortable and possibly a failure. Her idea that uncertainty can lead to the positive result of "unpredictable and uncontrollable connections" is applicable to parents and students and care-givers and workers of all stripes as well as c-suite leaders. Anyone who wants to take control of his or her life and understand the role of humility in human relationships will want to read this book. As she points out, it takes about the same length of time to read as a flight from Los Angeles to New York "with a small delay." Very much worth the time.
