This is the fourth game-oriented Python book I've purchased to help my kids learn coding skills. So far, I think this one is my favorite book for graphical gaming titles. I purchased the paperback version; it's over 200 pages, and each page is full of practical skills and helpful teaching. Every chapter tackles a different game and breaks down exactly what's going on and how to apply the programming concepts that the authors are teaching you. After two necessary intro chapters on getting a very beginner-level knowledge of Python, you're then provided 9 chapters that help you build increasingly sophisticated and fun games. We actually enjoy playing these games because they have the right mixture of low-res (retro) graphics and simple interactivity.==Who is this book for? ==Parents with kids as young as 7 or 8 can help their little ones begin a real programming language. You don't need pseudo-coding or fancy robots to learn to code--just this book and a free copy of Python will do the trick. You can even use the $35 Raspberry Pi as your computer if you have a TV and a keyboard lying around. For older kids in their tweens or early teens, this book will be all they need, even with no help from adults.==How is Coding Games in Python different?==This book is a great balance of depth and fun. I feel like parents that already know Python will be able to use this book as a hook to get kids interested and will be able to explain the areas that the book only glosses over.

Seven year old son really loves this, which is great. However, it's a little outdated and there's lots of settings to go through for set up. Depending on audience, there's also a little bit of context missing from explanations. This is not the kind of book that you can hand someone to expect to teach themselves :) once they start picking up though there's good content to get them developing.

Brendan Behan once wrote, "It's nice to be Irish, but would you want your daughter to marry one?" Well, I married an Irishman, and I recognize so much of the culture in this book. The story is mainly about clever--oh SO clever-boys who grow up in a post-war Ireland that is depressed financially, repressed by the Church and family rules, fathers who take to beating their progeny and of course drinking. These little boys have little to play with, and using their imagination to follow their curiosity, invent games more dangerous than rugby, built structures for fights, complete with traps. They have fun, they bleed, they make up stories for their Ma's about their black eyes and ruined Sunday jackets. But the writing is excellent, I could feel every punch and feel every kiss. Much affection accompanies the ongoing "wars". So HA HA Paddy Clarke and thank you, Roddy Doyle for a brilliant and moving book.

Voice driven and full of fun, tragedy and exhuberance! Must read.

I bought this book because it had a good price on Book Bub, decent reviews, and a Booker prize, I but couldn’t get interested enough in the characters and story. It was fine.

I found book tedious. Much of book was about the school boys and their misdeeds, their bullying and fighting. The last quarter of the book dealt with how he handled his family issues but book never revealed the cause of the issues. I would not recommend this book.

After reading this book, I am almost inclined to go back and change my review of David Mitchell's Black Swan Green, which owes a tremendous debt to Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha.Doyle's book is a marvel not because of a particularly ambitious plot but rather because he captures the fickle nature of pre-adolescence as experienced by the pre-adolescent. I don't say this to belittle the family drama the eponymous character lives through. However, the drama is especially compelling only because we get a truly believable stream of consciousness narrative that magnifies the banality of it all in much the same way it would be magnified in any child's mind.Stream of consciousness narratives can be difficult to follow at times. Even though this one, like many others, is chronologically non-linear, it is not willfully opaque. It moves authentically through Paddy's days with his friends and schoolmates, juxtaposing his peer relationships with his family ones.Doyle's book is a pleasure to read, and stylistically brilliant. There is every reason pick it up. And pair Black Swan Green with this one, not Catcher in the Rye.

This was my second Roddy Doyle novel and I loved it. The voice is incredibly, wonderfully strong and the story so small and yet so very, painfully, universally large ...

I recognized myself every page. Brought back memories that were long gone (I’m 66). Non stop prodigious crafting totally fun

Slow read, and trouble holding my interest. Glad to be off this train of thought.

About the Author

Douglas C. Giancoli obtained his BA in physics (summa cum laude) from UC Berkeley, his MS in physics at MIT, and his PhD in elementary particle physics back at the UC Berkeley. WARNING: The paperback edition is not the same as the hardback edition. They really shouldn't be listed together. The paperback edition has a big sign on the back of the book stating, "This is a special version of a textbook widely used by universities throughout the world. Pearson published this edition for the benefit of students outside the United States and Canada. If you purchased this book within the United States or Canada it has been imported without the approval or permission of the Publisher, and it does not include all of the same Problems." The Amazon product description did not disclose these important differences, and none of the third-party sellers seem to disclose this difference. As a result, I purchased the book, and it turned out my son couldn't use it for his class because, according to his Physics teacher, eight of the problem sets are different. Argh.

I used this book for two semesters of physics; I didn't like it. I found the explanations lacking and non-intuitive, and not many tips how to solve problems, but also the equations are not listed clearly. I found my self going on youtube and reading knight-jones-field college physics book as a supplement just to figure out what the book was trying to say.To give an example of why I didn't like this book: In chapter 22 under Energy in EM waves, the author makes zero attempt to help you understand notation. I had no clue what a rms value was. Only after looking online did I find out that if you use the rms valuesthe S ----> S(avg).

This is the physics book that a relative is currently using in his high school, and it is absolutely terrible. I often have to help him, and this book always leaves me scratching my head at how they get from point A to point B. I am no lightweight, either. I got straight A's in physics when I was in high school, and passed the AP exam, and I am a teacher now. If I am struggling so much, that means there is something wrong.Each section starts out with lots of background text, aka fluff that isn't going to help at all with grasping the concepts. Unfortunately, this background sometimes goes right in to the descriptions of formulae and the concepts of the lesson, so it is difficult to skip. Luckily, the formulae are in bold, so they are at least easy to see on the page. But you have to read through the text to understand what they mean, and the text is so poorly written that you often have to read through over and over again just to wrap your head around the formula and what they are trying to say about it.This brings me to the example problems. For what they are, they are fine, and they often make the concepts easier to understand than the actual lesson. So I have no real complaints about the examples that are included. They are just sorely inadequate, which I will explain next.The real glaring problem with this physics course is the problems that students have to do. They take the basic concepts (which students probably didn't even fully grasp in the first place because the lessons are so poorly done), and escalate them to impossible levels. It's fine to ask students to think outside the box, but asking them to think outside the box without anything similar even mentioned in the lesson, almost no information given, and having to combine formulae in crazy ways is just absurd. The book does not prepare them for that in any way. It's like learning to swim in a pool (the lesson) and then being thrown into the middle of the ocean while a storm is raging (the problems). One problem that still sticks out to me asks the student to calculate the Bernoulli forces on a house with a flat roof of given area in a certain speed wind (no information besides flat roof, roof area, and wind speed). The problem was, the lesson had not even gotten close to explaining that kind of thing. It had briefly mentioned Bernoulli forces on airplane wings and spheres, but all of it was about pressure and different flow rates. There wasn't even a suggestion about calculating forces with only one flow rate. And there were lots of other problems with the same problem. I have eventually been able to figure out most of them by careful reading and creative combinations of formulae, but not all. And the amount of effort that these problems required of me, someone who has already learned and understood this stuff and who wrestles with math formulae pretty frequently, is just absurd. If these problems are so difficult for me to do, imagine how much worse they must be for the students who have never done it before.I do not recommend this book. If you are a teacher, homeschooler, administrator, school board, or anyone else choosing curriculum and trying to do well by their students, do not select this book. It is a horrible excuse for a learning resource, and will only set students up for failure and disillusionment with science. A great teacher may be able to compensate for some of this, but don't rely on that. And if the teaching is great, how much better will students learn if they also have a great book. So go and find that great book. Do not buy this!

I needed a text to review physics in preparation for the state licensing exam. I went online to find reviews and Giancoli was the top rated for non calculus based AP physics. I also used Holt and Cutnell and Johnson. I found Giancoli to be the best of them. Concepts are fully explained with no corners cut. Towards the end of chapters they often have real world application examples. There are many problems that get systematically more difficult and are rated by difficulty so that it is easy to find beginner, intermediate and advanced problems. Solutions are provided for the odd numbered problems.I tutor so I generally use the book that the student's class is using. I find that I frequently turn to Giancoli for better problems and clearer examples to show the students. It is the best non-calculus text I have seen. I suppose the best indicator is that I enjoy using it. I don't find myself on guard for the next mistake or poor explanation or missing link in the thought chain. It is a pleasure to use.I found the other books lacking. Holt seemed to be a template to push teachers to purchase products and services. It is somewhat like Windows 8. It is clearly a product of too many MBAs and not enough educators. I am still trying to understand the appeal of Cutnell and Johnson. I find it has holes in the progression of the topic. It does not have the rigor of Giancoli.Regarding Hewitt and Halliday and Resnick. Hewitt deserves its fame as a great conceptual physics book. However I would like to see more problems included.I learned physics from the second edition of Halliday and Resnick. I recently used the 7th edition while working with a student. I am still getting to know this edition. What I like is that it is detailed and certainly has better and more examples than what I learned on. It also has more photos and color photos - a vast improvement :) So far so good. I will do a detailed comment on it after I have had more time.

This textbook was a lifesaver. My school uses a REALLY bad textbook. You should probably take calculus if you are using this textbook. Yes, you don't need it, but I thought the concepts were easier to grasp because of calculus. (although it just might be because I hate algebra's long methods as opposed to easy calc) Idk, but this saved me on every exam.

GET THIS BOOK! I've bought 3 additional books by Geneen and they are all great. (Women, Food, and God). This author is a badass and addresses all topics and thoughts that go on while going through or having eating disorders. It is so relatable and relieving. She is straight forward and easy to understand. I bought so many books from Amazon over the years, but this is the first book I received that I could not put down and finished within a week. She provides great tools and experience. I've been practicing them slowly. I can't say that this will solve your eating issues overnight, because let's be real, there's no magic pill in life and it takes time to implement new habits. I can promise you that this book is the real deal and I enjoy Geneen's honest writing. It's a great supplement in addition to therapy.

I read Paul McKenna's "I Can Make You Thin" (horrible title, but great advice). I really liked his four golden rules: Eat only when you are hungry, eat only what you want to eat, eat consciously and enjoy, and stop when you are full. Seems obvious, but hard to practice. I wanted to practice this instead of dieting. It makes sense and it feels right. But his book was missing something. WHY couldn't I do it?Breaking Free has the same ideas as his book. But there are no rules in hers; it's about acceptance. And she fills in the gaps that his book left. His is a small, digestible, analytical book, and hers goes into more depth. What is our goal? We think it's to be thin, but why? Because we want to be satisfied, happy. But that doesn't have to equate to being thin.Her book helps you cut yourself some slack. I still want to lose weight, but I don't need to stop living my life and berate myself because I'm not doing it perfectly and I'm not there yet.She touches on connecting with your body and trusting it. And if you do decide to eat when you are NOT hungry, why? Are you trying to avoid thinking about what's bothering you? Are you bored? If you know that eating when you are not hungry will not nourish your body, what are you hoping to accomplish?She points out that all of this is okay, but these are decisions that we need to make consciously. When she first started trying to come to a balance between her emotions and her body, she put on a lot more weight. And that's frightening. But in the long run, it was worth it to be able to eat only when she was hungry, or to not beat herself up when she ate anyway because she recognized that food was performing another function that she wanted.Her observations really hit home with me. It was a relief to hear someone put my thoughts and feelings into words that I could directly relate to.

I've been through all the disorders many reading this book have: anorexia, then into compulsive exercising, then years later bulimia and binge eating, which I maintained until 2 months ago...when I read this book. This book landed in my hands at the time in my life when I was receptive to it. I was at such a low, desperate point that I was willing to consider ANYTHING. Much like the author herself. I read reviews on this book and figured it was worth a shot.It was amazing. It's a book for those deep in the throes of compulsive eating, binging, bulimia, etc. It's for those of us that feel like we can never, ever be "normal" around food. For those of us whose lives are run by food, when it consumes our thoughts, actions and behaviors. When food has become a force that controls your life and your happiness--when you can't IMAGINE ever being able to be comfortable with eating like "everyone else"--this book might be the one little gift that touches your heart and guides you into the transformation you are desperate for.Roth goes into the fundamentals of learning how to identify hunger on a very basic level again. How to identify it, then how to identify what will satisfy it. Then, she helps you to identify what's going on when you want to eat but aren't physically hungry. I have been incorporating her mindsets for 8 weeks now. I've lost 10 pounds as I'm naturally getting back to my body's normal weight...while finally, finally becoming more comfortable being around food. It does not run my life anymore. I'm definitely not 100% "healed" from my disordered thoughts, but they are losing their grip on me more and more every day. Sending love to anyone else out there who might be in this space and need something to come into their lives to transform their own hell.

I got down to the last two chapters and hated this book so much that I stopped and threw it in the trash. I just couldn't relate to the author at all and didn't feel the book actually taught you how to break free from emotional eating. Yes it tells you to acknowledge it and to be kind to yourself but ultimately it says to see a therapist lol

I love Geneen Roth's writings and this book was a real eye opener for me regarding the "why's" of emotional eating. As a follower of her readings, I found this book and several other of her books to be very helpful on my journey to understanding why I over-eat and how to get it under control. It not only helps with eating disorders, it also helped me with other aspects of my life. Very reader friendly.

Still working through this one. Again an easy read for me and the author gives good information to to assist the reader in determining what emotional eating is and how to help you through the rough spots of emotional eating.

Geneen Roth understands the reasons women have trouble with their eating more than anyone, and she articulates them in her books beautifully.
