He started shooting when photos came in little canisters of 36 frames and has been at it since.” –NPR The Picture Show   “Photojournalist Skerry presents some 150 images of marine animals and ecosystems along with stories of his encounters with them. He hopes his work will increase awareness of the threats facing the oceans and inspire actions to counter these.” –Science Magazine   “A gold mine for more casual ocean enthusiasts or budding marine explorers, as Skerry’s photographs and accompanying text are at once fascinating, moving, and inspirational.” –Library Journal   “This is a big book featuring extraordinarily fine photos made in highly challenging conditions…This lavish presentation brings to readers a selection of stunning images made over the course of three decades, accompanied by Skerry's charming personal narrative of his engagement with his subjects and his profession.”  –Book News "Few photographers can do what Brian Skerry has mastered throughout his career: capturing the ocean's beauty and vulnerability, whether it's in remote places or in plain sight. You can't get any closer without a scuba tank."--Juliet Eilperin; national environmental reporter and author of Demon Fish: Travels Through the Hidden World of Sharks   "Ocean Soul reveals an important and unreachable realm few ever are able to see. Brian Skerry's photographs are so magnificent that it can be tempting to breeze through his narrative to get to the next picture of a whale, squid, or coral. But don't hurry past his words; Skerry is a fine writer who transports you to his underwater worlds and introduces you to the sentient and intelligent beings that survive sometimes harsh environments and the scarring effects of human activities. I bought this book for my mother-in-law, having been intrigued by a review. Then I spotted it in my library, so had the opportunity to read and view it myself. It is a treasure that I want for my personal library.

I don't often buy pretty underwater coffee table books - because I read them once and put them on the shelf. This one refuses to go to the shelf. The text is enjoyable reading and I now feel like I know Brian Skerry ... but the images evoke such emotion - from compassion, to wonder, to concern ... that I find myself picking up the book often ... and sneaking 15 minutes to visit Brian's photographs over and over. As an underwater photographer I appreciate his technical mastery, but most of all, I know he named the book correctly - Ocean Soul. The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA is hosting a Dec 2012 - March 2013 gallery showing of Brian's images and I hope to meet him and tell him how much I am enjoying this book, week after week.

Purchased "Ocean Soul" as a gift for my daughter. It is an absolutely beautiful book & very informative. The photos are beautiful. She loves it. And of course the order & delivery thru Amazon was great as usual.

Beautiful photography and story of Mr. Skerry's interest, love of the ocean and his career.

Brian Skerry can not only take the most incredible underwater photos, but lets one see the souls of his most beautiful subjects. The text is very well written and perfectly appropriate.A lovley book.

Gorgeous, gorgeous pictures, and fantastic stories of how he got the pictures.

This book is an awesome treasure for artists or scientists, or just those who admire the natural world. Brian Skerry has produced a masterpiece of photography, truly precious possession.

Made a great birthday gift for our 4 year old grandson who loves oceanic life

Doresse's Exploration of Gnostic Wonders:A masterful entery to Gnosticism; Doresse's book was the first insider's authoritative description of the Egyptian Gnostic writings known as the Chenoboskion Library, discovered near today's Nag-Hammadi, in upper Egypt. This is, no doubt, the best book on rediscovering the roots of Gnosticism in Chenoboskion. Doresse's enthusiasm makes this book an enjoyable reading, even with all the complicated Gnostic thought and philosophical terms. He studied with Togo Mina, a Coptic scholar, then director of the Coptic Museum, under Prof. Pueuch, and was one of the first few with whom Mina consulted. Doresse got the finesse to lead the reader to appreciate the beauty of these writings, explaining their underlying thought clearly, and without bias.Despite the forty five years since its publication, its masterful introduction to Gnosticism and elaborate account of the discovery, and re-acquiring of the smuggled codices keeps it still very vivid. A detailed description of the codices is given, before he starts a discussion of the texts themselves, and what they reveal to him of Gnostic belief and practice, with a special emphasis on the Gospel of Thomas.Previously known to scholars? Before unearthing Chenoboskion library, almost all existing original references on Gnosticism were written in Coptic; including the Askew codex, the Bruce fragments, codex Berolensis that no one knows where did it disappear after the fall of Berlin. These gnostic writings were previously known to scholars, but no one would have expected that such a Gnostic collection, could show up in this great variety. Doresse's personal experience, and excitement over his early participation in these discoveries renders the book brisk and engaging, even if the subject could have been academic and monotonous. Given that most of what we knew about the various sects of Gnostics came from the surviving writings by early Christians Church fathers like Iraeneus, Tertulian, Clement and Origen, the core reality of gnosticism was not distorted but only partly understood, in the light of these apologies. Doresse thoroughly reviews what was known of Gnosticism before these writings were recently unearthed.Doresse analysis of Chenoboskion Marvels:Outlining and discussing those texts previously known in ancient writings, only by title or through brief quotations from writings that has been long thought to be lost, is part of his amazement. He is overwelmed due to the broad spectrum of sources the Gnostics relied on. The library includes, Hermetic Egyptian and Persian manuals as well as a great part of vaguely known but long time lost apocryphal Christian writings and Apocalyptic books. This leads Doresse to confirm his mentor Professor Pueuch theory of Judaic roots of Gnosticism, and would also explain how some scholars comment on the 'more Gnostic sounding passages' of the New Testament. It was also an amusing surprise to find adaptations of earlier known works selectively edited for Gnostic use, renamed, and ascribed to more authorititive writers. This practice does make it difficult to take at face value the Library's outstanding pseudo-Christian works attributed to the Evangelists, Apostles, and even Jesus Christ Himself. At the same time, it also makes some scholars wonder if any of the same sayings infelterated into Christian doctrines or even included within the canonical books of the New Testament in its final form. (authorized by St Athanasius in his paschal letter of 367).Secret Words of Jesus:The words of Jesus, secretly revealed to his disciples, his teachings given an enhanced meaning are fascinating in that these ideals are so poetic. No doubt, that the Gnostics adapted some Eastern Church teachings, including descent into Hades, Christ teaches that spiritual knowledge is gained speculatively through meditation on Gnostic scripture, a merit of the few, through a knowing faith, and contemplative prayer. For Gnostics, faith is just the beginning, following the lead of Easterners, whereas for some western Christians, faith in Jesus is their only forensic justification goal.Epilogue: Savior Descent into Hades:'Here, the Chenoboskion manuscript presents a lacuna which the Berlin Codex enables us to fill: the Savior recalls the descent into the lower world by which he is coming to deliver the human creature enslaved to the Archons. "I have struck off the chains...I have broken down the doors of the pitiless and humiliated them...I have revealed to you the name of the Perfect and the whole desire of the mother of the angels. I came to reveal to you that which exists since the beginning. I came because of the pride of the archigenitor and his angels, who say, ' We are gods!' to condemn them by revealing to everyone the God who is above the universe. Trample under foot their sepulchers! let their yoke be broken, that mine may be exalted?" (page 200)

THE SECRET BOOKS OF THE EGYPTIAN GNOSTICS by Jean Doresse is another great scholarly work free from "New Age" claptrap & commercialist distortion. The book is particularly relevant as French author Doresse was literally one of the first Westerners to actually see the original Nag Hammadi texts discovered in 1947. Although Doresse is a Christian proponent with a thinly veiled hostility to Gnostic tradition, he provides a wealth of reference material and, like Kurt Rudolph, indicates a possible interaction with Gnostic beliefs and Paganism--particularly in Alexandria, the motherland of Gnostic Paganism. This book is a MUST READ for any serious student of the origins and practices of Gnostic Philosophy.Gospel of Judas and Other Gnostic Secrets Revealed

Good book on lucid dreaming for beginners. I have read 4 books on lucid dreaming and have been trying to have lucid dreams for about a month without success so far, but I'll keep trying. This book has the same techniques as the other 3 books I've read by Charles Morley, Stephen Laberge and Allan Wallace. The book by LaBerge is more comprehensive but can be overwhelming for a beginner. The book by Wallace is more focused on the tibetan dream yogas. This book is more similar to the one by Morley, as it is more approachable to beginners. Good luck on your attempts! i will for sure keep trying.

This book REALLY works.... I followed the directions and I SWEAR I had a Lucid dream every night. The only problem was that during the day I would be very tired. I am thinking that while I was 'lucid in my dreams' I was not actually getting any sleep. It works though, for sure!!

Honestly the best book about dreaming I've ever read. The style of writing as if it were a knowledgeable friend telling you what you can do seriously adds to the overall effectiveness. Hearing it from the people who've done it for years feels more pure than reading it from a journalist or a scientist. Overall amazing book would recommend to anyone looking to lucid dream. (Note: it takes time and a lot of commitment to start to lucid dream. You can't expect to pick up the book and the same night lucid dream. It took me 2 years of on and off work to get to a point where I could have maybe one lucid dream a month.)

I look forward to going to bed and I love a nap also. My dreams amaze me. I wish I could sketch my dreams.I have not been able to control my dreams for the most part. If something is too frightening, I wake myself up. If I realize it's a dream, and try to change what is going on, that also wakes me up or I go on to a different dream.Though in the last year I have decided to stay in the bad dream to see where it takes me. The dream is that I'm in a roller coaster of sorts, and I'm frightened of going over the highest part. Instead of waking up now, I continue over but end up in a marshy area where the rail stops.I am not afraid of water so I am confused as to why, in so many of my dreams, that the water is murky and full of strange sea creatures. Or that I go over a dune and its high tide and there is no beach.I can fly, but only just above people about 7 feet. I can't fly far. I also can't run. My feet feel like cement. It's ridiculous, so I wake up to start another dream.I dream of a house that is set up strangely but quite deluxe. I also ultimately get stuck in a stairway that is boxed in. If I go for a drive, I drive poorly and I never can decide which route to take. Nothing is familiar. Once I recognize the same scenario, I wake up so if can go back to another dream.Since reading your book, I have changed some minor things in three dreams I had this week. I am hoping to keep working on it, now that I learned lucid dreaming exists. Thanks,Kathy Snow Dweck

You need to read this book. It's not a gimic or a hoax, it's real. I was skeptical, but after reading and having lucid dreams now it's 100% real. Morever, what you can do in your dream world is just nuts, talk to dead relatives, ask big life questions, fly, shapeshift...YEP.It takes some practice and discipline though, I've let it slip lately, but I'll be getting back into the swing of it and can't wait to see what I can learn. 100% must read and recommend paperback so you can easily reference. I listened to audiobook first which is very good, but physical book comes in handy

I got this for my husband as a gift and he loves it - he finds it fascinating and well written. If you're interested in this topic, I think this book is a good choice.

The book provides a step to step guide on how to comtrol your dreams and how to be concious when you are dreaming. The techniques require practice, but may worth a try. To be honest so far I was not able to lucid dreaming, but I keep on trying. It is not easy and requires lot of patience and learning, but must be a good experience.

Absolutely awesome book! Really well written with excellent information for beginners; laid out in an easy to understand way. The illustrations are also some of the best I've seen! Wish more books of this type were laid out in a similar way; fun and easy to follow while still containing plenty of information and tid-bits. Repurchasing because I gave my first copy away to a friend (: also makes a great gift!

Review

This is a book about working together under extraordinary conditions where the temperature in your tent can drop to ten degrees below zero and a tiny hole in a glove can mean the possible loss of a finger. It is about making decisions while an avalanche rushes by you with a wind that knocks you over. It is about risking death knowing that you have a daughter, a partner at home . . . the compelling story of thirteen very different women . . . each determined to get women to the top of a mountain. —Erica Bauermeister, reviewed in 500 Great Books by Women

This is, without a doubt, one of the best books written about a specific mountain climbing expedition. This particular book is a lyrical and moving account of the the first women's expedition to climb Annapurna in the Himalayas. It provides great detail and insight into their two month odyssey in the mountain and chronicles the challenges that they faced in trying to reach the summit. The leader of the expedition authored the book and her characterizations of her fellow expeditioners are interesting and engaging. Her description of life on an expedition is filled with a myriad of detail that will enthrall all armchair climbers, as well as climbing enthusiasts. These details make for gripping reading, at times, and her descriptive narrative is always evocative of another time and place. In reading it, one realizes just how far women have come in terms of acceptance in the mountain climbing arena. Their time spent on the mountain is illustrated by photographs that beautifully resonate with the lyricism of the author's chronicle. The obstacles they overcame, their day to day travails, the bonding and alliances that formed amonst the different members of the expedition, all add to the beauty of the book. The photographs memorialize those moments in time that best evoke the nuances of what it was like on the expedition and, at the same time, give one a sense of the beauty and majesty of the mountain. The success of the expedition in terms of their having actually reached the summit, however, is clouded by the tragic loss of two of its members on a second, ill-advised attempt to reach the summit. Nonetheless, the quest of the American Women Himalayan Expedition to reach the summit of Annapurna is a testament to courage and commitment. It is also a great read.

Underheralded women vs nature story. So much adventure-survival lit is male-based, this is a quality counter balance.

Most of time I was awed by the courage and determination these women showed in their quest to be the first American women to climb to the summit of Annapurna, but sometimes I was annoyed that they were not well-versed in the culture of the people of Nepal and so were sometimes overwhelmed by the demands of the Sherpas. I appreciated getting to know the members of the team as well as the Sherpas and how they related to the author. I do believe the author assumed that only other mountain climbers would read this book, so she did not explain some of the terms she used, as well as what some of the equipment was used for. The map and pictures were really helpful in visualizing the climb and the extreme conditions they faced.

Bought this book after learning of the "A Woman's Place is on Top" logo from the recent North Face t-shirt designs. I loved it. Great recount of what these brave women endured and overcame in order to have a somewhat successful expedition. Highly recommend.

Outstanding. I am an avid reader and this story and writer's style is pure enjoyment. Arlene Blum has a gift for telling a story. The story itself is fascinating. I will keep this book to read again and will seek out other books by Ms. Blum.

I read the original story in 1989, one year after the actual trip. The book eventually wore out, and I later purchased this revised edition. I have never braved those heights. In fact, I have an extreme fear of heights, and that has brought me to develop an interest in those who take up this challenge. Reading the experiences of the first women's climb of Annapurna has served to encourage me to push ahead and attempt things I otherwise would not have. That's how powerfully this book has affected me for all these years.

This was an enjoyable read about a women's expedition to climb the mountain shown on the cover. An awful lot of time was spent detailing the logistics of getting the supplies to the right places though I can now understand how the expedition relied on this facet of the operation to succeed. I have alot of respect for these women!

amazing and in parts tragic story of shear human perseverance; lots of details on the climb, less so on the descend.

This is a must-have for every lover of Venice: the would-be, brand-new or long-time. A close-up, languid tour of the main attractions and more quiet corners of La Serenissima and the greater lagoon, revealing things even we besotted “old hands” might have missed.

The author, J. G. Links, gets it. This is only walking tours book I've ever used that doesn't expect you to read and walk simultaneously. Instead, Mr. Links walks you to a café/park bench/great vista and invites you take a seat while he tells you everything about what you can see. With that accomplished, he gives directions for walking to the next sitting place where he then regales you with wonderful stories about the city before you. Following the guidebook, my husband and I found ourselves in a perfectly private little piazza on the Grand Canal that we never, ever would have discovered because we would have assumed that the passageway was private property. I have recommended this book numerous times over the years (actually an older edition -- my husband and I were newlyweds when we first used the book in 1988) and I'm back at Amazon buying yet another copy to give as a gift to friends who are making the trip next week.

Terrific read for those intent on seeing the Venice that lies beyond Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge. Whether you follow the author's routes on his strolls thru the sestieres, or just use his walks as a source of inspiration (as we did), this book is an indispensable addition to the library of anyone planning a trip to Venice. Thanks in large measure to encouragement offered by this book, we ventured into some of the nooks and crannys of this amazing city... we'll see St Mark's Basilica next time we go.

The idea that you walk and look, THEN sit and read and look. And info on using the vaporetti.

It made Venice come alive. Loved it but got huge blisters trying to do all walks in 2 days!!

+ Helpful for identifying key historical sites you might not want to miss+ Lends historical context and artistic insight into these sites+ Street maps with recommended walking directions- Somewhat dry and less interesting read for the casual vacationerI got through about half the book before arriving in Venice and never really finished it afterward. It's definitely more for go-getter travelers who like to figure things out on their own and opt for a slightly less traveled path than--say--people who'd prefer a general tour that's been organized by someone else. In short, the book is ideal for a self-guided tour of Venice.Note: Size-wise the book is roughly half of a letter-size paper, an inch in thickness, so it packs well into luggage.

Fantastic Book!!! I bought this for my wife as a memento of our 25th Anniversary trip to Venice. It was perfect. I highly recommend it to any armchair traveler who wants to "visit" the world's most romantic city. David

What a strange and wonderful little book!Venice for Pleasure is essentially four walking tours told in a charmingly conversational style by an author who is clearly in love with Venice. Stopping in a Venetian cafe to read a passage is like having a friend leaning over your shoulder to recall the local history and gossip, point out fascinating details that you probably wouldn't have noticed, and make you smile with his dry wit.We did all four walking tours and thoroughly enjoyed Links' companionship along the way; I can't recommend it highly enough if exploring Venice on foot is your aim. We also found the directions infallible. Please note that this isn't a conventional guidebook, so you shouldn't expect logistical information.
