About the Author

Carl Sagan served as the David Duncan Professor of Astronomy and Space Sciences and Director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies at Cornell University. He played a leading role in the Mariner, Viking, Voyager, and Galileo spacecraft expeditions, for which he received the NASA Medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement and (twice) for Distinguished Public Service.   His Emmy- and Peabody–winning television series, Cosmos, became the most widely watched series in the history of American public television. The accompanying book, also called Cosmos, is one of the bestselling science books ever published in the English language. Dr. Sagan received the Pulitzer Prize, the Oersted Medal, and many other awards—including twenty honorary degrees from American colleges and universities—for his contributions to science, literature, education, and the preservation of the environment. Pale Blue Dot is a non-fiction and is Sagan’s analysis of the role space will play in humanity’s future. It was written in 1994, and therefore one of his last publications, as Sagan tragically died in 1996. The title of the book, Pale Blue Dot, was taken from the instantly infamous Pale Blue Dot photograph taken by Voyager 1 in 1990. In his book, Sagan created a short analysis of the importance of the human exploration of space. His reasons range from spin-off technology to the intrinsic value of exploration and discovery. But what struck me the most about Sagan’s book was that although he talked extensively about these as, in general, good reasons to explore space, they weren’t the best reason. Or rather, they weren’t enough. Sagan goes on to argue that the single greatest reason to explore space is the survival of the species. Something as an individual I haven't ever really thought of. It is possible that we could destroy ourselves through nuclear war, yes, but that’s not the survival Sagan is talking about. He’s speaking about asteroids. There is a chance that at some point in the future a rock big enough to destroy human life will collide with Earth. Exploring space and developing new technologies is the only way to search out and redirect incoming asteroids. If incoming asteroids cannot be redirected it is important to the species that we have settled elsewhere. Really great book, highly recommend it.

I was hoping for the entire audiobook to be narrated by Sagan but only the first few chapters are narrated by him. His wife narrates the rest. It's puzzling considering he had read his entire book in 1994 and it was made available at some point (almost the entire book can be found on youtube broken up by chapter unlike the CD set I purchased). It would've made more sense to have Ann Druyan read an introduction or include additional CDs of her readings while leaving his originals intact. My quest to find Chapter 22 narrated by Sagan continues...

The learning and science encompassed by this book are truly awesome -- but the humanity is greater. Writing some years ago he speaks to the moment... reminding those inflated with their sense of power that the earth they seek to control is but a small blue dot, disappearing in a sea of blackness. Precious and fragile.

Honestly, everyone should read this book. I have owned mine for a long time and keep going back to it. It's now 2018 and it's more relevant than ever. A brilliant mind and teacher, Sagan's writing is eloquent, thought provoking and poetic. I soooo wish he was still here to assist us with our understanding of the future.

This is an excellent effort. All photo's are printed from a film based system. If you are an underwater photographer this effort will likely inspire you.

This book contains exceptionally beautiful underwater photographs. Most images are in colour, but there are also some remarkable black white shots, taken by the photographer at different locations throughout the world. The photographer presents the reader with images that are rare and unforgettable. Congratulations to the author David Doubilet for sharing with the world such an exceptional work of art.

An excellent gift as a photographer giving it to someone who doesn't have any art. Excellent for anyone who enjoys the ocean.

Love David Doubilet but this is not one of his best. Most of the photographs are dark and moody. Bought it used so not much money but still disappointing.

You'll feel a profound sense of wonder as you wander the depths of these pages. There is joy, and there is sadness. The world is an amazing place, and this life's work capturing part of it on film will transport you up and out of yourself. Wafting through the views is like taking a vacation. You will come back changed.

It is a fascinating account of an ordinary foot soldiers life in the army of Napoleon. A rather brutal life at that. Certainly there was nothing romantic about it. I had always believed that most of the casualties that the Grand Army of the French Empire suffered were on the retreat from Moscow. However the attrition rate on the march to Moscow was astounding also. It was a very badly planned campaign with the lack of food causing so many poor soldiers to die. As one who was an ordinary conscripted soldier myself once upon a time I was quiet upset at reading about the way these men were treated. It brings home the horrors of war in all its starkness, and how unimportant the ordinary soldier was in the eyes of the generals and 'Powers that be'. Cannon fodder is a mild description. I hope more diaries like this are discovered and published.

Mine came from my seller with a slightly noticeable crease on the cover-protector, and more marks in it than I expected, but it was definitely in the advertised condition. Nice, easy to read, little if any damage to the pages, no funny smells, and most of all - the reading was excellent.

A fascinating period that Americans may no little about told by a young soldier in Napoleon's army as he trudges towards Moscow in the dead of winter. Remarkedly he never loses his hope or trust in God. Nor does he question his superiors as soldiers might today.

This is what it is. Not profound or hugely insightful, but if you are interested in these wars, or reading natural accounts or letters of times past, this was a quick read full of pathos but not bathos, and a reminder of just how lucky we have it. His description of trying to get over the last bridge, among a sea of people and cannon fire, taking 4 hours, is amazing. He was a lucky man, and it is clear he knew it.

Napoleonic campaigns and especially Napoleonic campaign in Russia is something that interests me a great deal for many reasons and I am always eager to read eyewitness' accounts. I was so happy when I found this book, I wanted to hear how soldiers coped through, not just read something from generals and officers' point of view. This book provides such perspective and as another reviewer noted it is surprisingly well written.

I am so glad I was not there and did not share his experiences. I read it twice. The parts where he describes how they "foraged" AKA stole from the population is interesting and what a bad time it was to be a small farmer.He describes the retreat from Russia too . . . . I probably would have died.

Excellent account of the invasion of Moscow - one of the most readable and interesting ones I've found. Perhaps that's because it was written by a common soldier not long after the war. Informative introduction, too.

And the recent book by Depak Chopra, Life After Death: Burden of Proof, provides another physician's view of the non-temporal and the eternal with an Eastern perspective that is complex, but intriguing.There is a growing body of evidence that indicates that all these writings should be studied carefully. I highly recommend all of Browne's books for being accessible. They make a good introduction to the more arcane Chopra.

I enjoyed reading about different realms and beings from these realms. It's more geared towards spiritual practitioners and metaphysicians. It might be a bit too 'out there' if you are new to spirituality. You might want to start with something more simple like 'The Other Side and Back' by the same author.

Sylvia just keeps them coming and after each book I am hungry for more! She has a way of explaining life in a way that connects with my soul, it all just feels so right. This book was a one that I have to read again to get everything out of it but I relish reading it again and again. Sylvias books are NEVER a disappointment! All of her books have filled some kind of void inside me and keep me coming back for more!

WITH THAT SAID I HAVE PURCHASED 3 OF SYLVIA'S BOOKS AND IAM HOOKED.I LOVE THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT GIVES A VERY GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF LIFE AND WHY WE STRUGGLE WITH CERTAIN ELEMENTS IN OUR JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE.IT DOES NOT HURT TO OPEN YOUR MIND TO THINGS THAT MAY SEEM UNREAL.I HAVE LEARNED FROM THIS BOOK AND HER OTHER BOOKS HOW TO COPE WITH DIFFICULT SITUATIONS BETTER.LIKE SYLVIA SAYS IF WE ONLY HAVE GOOD TIMES WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM THAT AND HOW DO WE ADVANCE SPIRITUALLY IF WE DONT HAVE HARD TIMES SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.OF COURSE WE HAVE SKEPTICS AND THATS FINE TO BE SKEPTICAL BUT BEING CYNICAL IS SOMETHING ENTIRELY DIFFERENT.SKEPTICISM SHOULD NEVER TURN INTO HATE BECAUSE YOU ARE IGNORANT TO OR DONT UNDERSTAND THE BELIEFS OF OTHER PEOPLE AND THATS SOMETHING WE AS PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN. SYLVIA NEVER TRIES TO FORCE ANYONE TO BELIEVE WHAT SHE SAYS. SHE SIMPLY SAYS LET THIS LEAD YOU TO YOUR OWN TRUTH. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK !

Ted Kooser is the author of numerous books of poetry and prose, and he served as the Poet Laureate of the United States (2004-2006). Raised and educated in the Midwest, Kooser worked for most of his life as a life insurance executive in Lincoln, Nebraska. His book Delights & Shadows won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 2005. At present, Kooser remains one of the best-selling poets in the U.S., and has an appointment as the Presidential Professor at the University of Nebraska where he teaches courses in poetry and nonfiction writing. Kooser's poems are about the joy and grief of human (and animal) connections, and reflections of such as he closely observes the natural world. He is widely regarded as a master of the metaphor, which brings sly humor, surprise, and empathy to his observations. Kooser is a diarist of the brilliance of our every-day experience and he generously champions fellow poets who offer the same gift to ordinary citizens (i.e., non-academicians). A testimony to this is his marvelous weekly column "American Life in Poetry" -- syndicated by hundreds of newspapers (and with free email delivery to subscribers) -- which features poems for the people, selected and briefly introduced by Kooser. As stated on his website, the column "seeks to create a vigorous presence for poetry in our culture".This collection brings his selection of earlier work (though many of my favorites are absent!) plus new poems as animated as the old. E.g., from "Hoarfrost": ...To walk / is like finding your way / through a wedding dress, the sky / inside it cold and satiny; / no past, no future, just the now / all breathless. Then a red bird, / like a pinprick, changes everything.

I enjoy Kooser’s comfortable little poems, rich with nostalgia and keen observations of nature and rural life, soft-edged verses with open doors and windows for seeing in. The poems are abundantly infused with similes, metaphors, and imagery. As he knits together the words in his poems occasionally his intricately designed metaphors and similes can overpower at the expense of the poem’s theme, like TV commercials so entertaining the viewer loses sight of the product being touted. There is some falloff of quality in the new poems' section -- poems produced in sufficient numbers necessary to meet the "new and selected" requirement for marketing the collection. But all and all a nice collection of poems rendered in the consistent Kooser style.

Astounding collection of the best poems of one of the best poets of the last half century. About 1/3 of the poems are new and not published in earlier collections, while the rest are some of the seminal poems of the past forty years of Kooser's career. Reading some of his earlier, already read poems, is like being tapped on the shoulder by an old friend, not seen in years--a moment of recognition yielding to a very fond hug. His new poems convince the reader of his magical powers to transform mundane and everyday moments into the transcendent moments they truly are, moments that are honest and true, that will uplift the reader above the ordinariness of our lives.

Ted Kooser is a favorite author and poet of mine. I liked this book very much, was curious to see what poems he would pick from this other books to include as well as to read his new poems. It is an engaging and beautiful book with much in it to read, repeatedly. I also sent it to two friends who have enjoyed it and keep the book at their bedsides to re-read at will. It is a fine book, one to treasure and to keep.

Ted Kooser has been my favorite poet for years. What a delight to find his new poems, written with words so simple and meaning so true they go straight to my heart.

This is a review of the free Kindle edition.I had, of course, heard of the Picture of Dorian Gray, but with the joy of a Kindle I'm now able to read it for free.Wow.The story is amazing. The character of Dorian Gray shines (sucks the light out of the room?) during the story. The imagery of the picture is wonderful to reflect the corruption of Dorian's soul. Along with Dorian, I do wonder if he could have reversed it, if he had cared enough to try. The ending while abrupt, was perfect for the character, as it seems that Dorian was protected by something, to make sure that his end could only come about the way that it did.Definite recommend.

This was easily one of the best books I have ever read. This book was written over a century ago and still remains popular and insightful. Oscar Wilde’s perception of humanity is, in my opinion, spot on. Every word of this book has depth and meaning.I absolutely despise Dorian Gray, but I am sure that was Wilde’s intention. How could you like a man that is so selfish, narcissistic, and obsessed with his own youth and beauty at the cost of all others around him? Dorian truly represents the ugliest that humanity has to offer, and I am happy that he pays for his sins in a fairly poetic nature.To lighten the serious tones of this book is Lord Henry, easily my favorite character. Nearly every line he speaks is a life-quote and his character gives insight to Wilde’s own thoughts regarding the world and the people in the world. A few of my favorites:“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”“The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. Resist it & your soul grows sick with longing for things it has forbidden itself.”“Some things are more precious because they don’t last long.”I liked this book so much that I want to re-read it immediately :).

I am getting very tired of ordering what I think are professionally prepared books and finding that they are print-on-demand works probably put together by one person that do not adhere to certain standards of the book industry.In this case, the title refers to "other writings" but it does not seem to contain any other writings. In any case, it is hard to tell because there is no table of contents. Chapters do not begin on a new page but (to save money) a new chapter will begin anywhere on the page.Sometimes there are smart quotes. Sometimes there are unformatted quotation marks.Margins are very close to the edges of the pages, again to save money.Most troubling, the original Bantam edition was about 450 pages; this edition is 190 pages.So, I would recommend you go with a name brand publisher instead of ordering this version.Why did I not give it one or two stars? Because I did not notice typos and the entire text of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" appears to be contained here, plus the front and back covers, which contain old portraits of the author, are attractive.

The artist, Basil, introduces Dorian to a friend, Lord Henry, as he sits for the portrait. Some could say that Lord Henry introduces Dorian to a life of no morals and selfishness. As the lord is the first to mention that the painting will always be a picture of Dorian forever young and the real Dorian will grow old. In a way, this stimulates Dorian to announce his wish to give his soul for the reverse.This was my second time trying to read TPODG. The first time I just could not get into it. This time, I can not figure out what made me not want to read it. The story is beautiful. Oscar Wilde’s words paint a portrait of its own. It is written in this mesh of Victorian and Contemporary. So for me that makes it easier to relate to. The words are not like reading Shakespeare.I am not good at critiquing books and getting into every metaphor, or meaning behind it all. When I try that with a book I can’t enjoy it. So I just read, and from the beginning, I could tell this was going to be a new favorite author. This coming from a reader who is not a fan of many classics...but I keep trying and here I found one I loved.I bought the book of the complete works of Oscar Wilde and will be next reading The Canterville Ghost. I can not gush enough how much I loved this book. I am curious now to watch one of the movie version of Dorian Gray because I never have.
