About the Author

J. Drew Lanham is a native of Edgefield, South Carolina, and an Alumni Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Master Teacher at Clemson University. Lanham is a birder, naturalist, and hunter-conservationist who has published essays and poetry in publications including Orion, Flycatcher, and Wilderness, and in several anthologies, including The Colors of Nature, State of the Heart, Bartram’s Living Legacy, and Carolina Writers at Home, among others. He and his family live in the Upstate of South Carolina, a soaring hawk’s downhill glide from the southern Appalachian escarpment that the Cherokee once called the Blue Wall.

This is a very heartfelt and moving book that covers the gamut from the author's childhood to the present. He describes what it was/is like living as the "rare bird" in the flock.As a white man, there is no way I can begin to put myself in the author's shoes as he describes the affect of seeing Confederate flags on cars, flying from houses, and in cemeteries. I will say this, though...living in Pennsyltucky, we have more than our share of Confederate flags, license plates, etc. on display. I never realized how many folks up here had such pride in their Southern roots--because that's what I understand it's all about. In any case, even I, as a white man, am uncomfortable in the small towns and rural areas where such displays are prominent.I am a nature lover and enjoyed very much the author's thoughts on birding, the land, etc. as he went through life. I highly recommend this book.

I am enjoying every page of this outstanding book. I grew up in a white suburban neighborhood in the segregated South. I find Drew Lanham's descriptions of his youth in a rural area so touching. I am envious of his childhood observations of nature.I love the concept of a sense of place. How does the place where you grew up affect you for the rest of your life. This book certainly provides Drew Lanham's amazing sense of place.Drew Lanham is a gifted writer and I appreciate his sharing of these deeply personal experiences.

This is a marvelous book, and I'm not just whistling Dixie. It's thoroughly entertaining, enriching, enlivening, and original. Composed of a series of beautifully honed and crafted stand-alone memoir pieces about Lanham's life growing up black in rural S.C., becoming a lover and preserver of nature (especially birds), and his journey to becoming a fully-realized person (he'd probably say " work-in-progress"), it's chock-full of pitch perfect details that pin one to the page. He's a fine writer, and from what I can tell, a fine human being. He's definitely one on whom nothing has been lost, and he has a singular talent in bringing his rich world--and self--to life.

From the very first page I was drawn into a world that felt so very familiar to my heart in many ways and yet so very different in other ways from the way I grew up not too far away from The Home Place. I wish I could have met Mamatha...sat in her house eating her butter biscuits and delicious treats, while asking her about her healing herbs and natural potions and her connection to "the other world". I cried as I read the "Life's Spring" chapter...cried not only because of the loss of your James Hoover Lanham... but the loss of his scared energy as he maintained the land and stresses as best he could. I could feel his strength, his love and also his pride as a father, a husband and a proud son, carrying on the family name.... And then to transition at spring right as everything was coming to life felt bitter sweet. New life and death...the circle of life.Truly I could feel every beautiful description as if I were there walking the land, listening to the birds, laying on my back looking at the star studded night, smelling the aromas of cooking and cleaning and flowers and fruit trees...all of it. And to feel the pain of prejudice through the ages... I found myself literally holding my breath during the descriptions of outings with questionable surroundings....and unfortunately feel and know that prejudice is still present today. It brought up for me the search and question that we all ask at some point in our life regardless of the color of our skin...Who are we? Why are we here? Where did we come from?Thank you for giving us a glimpse into the magic of your journey and the experiences of the Home Place and all of its ebb and flow. I look forward to reading more of your work in the near future!I highly recommend this to all.

His home life and love of nature are told with humor and frankness. Candor and beauty are mixed together to inspire others to excel in whatever they do, and to love their work as he does.

As a white Southerner, I found kinship in the love of Piedmont land. I also had a glimpse of the hypervigilance that I have the privilege to be free of. I greatly appreciate the gift of this book.

Very insightful for those of us who wander freely looking at nature and don't have to think so hard about what we are looking at or how we look.Lanham writes with humor and also a great understanding of nature : human and wild! A good read.

Lanham writes well and evocatively. His descriptions of his early childhood - the place and the people - are precise and memorable. His devotion to nature is a reminder of nature's universal appeal and power to transcend race, culture, creed, social status.

book seems great, but I cannot downliad any of the project files. I try to go to the website and download them, but I get an error that some files cannot be accessed, download file is emptycan anyone help?

Nice clear explanations of each project , great design of each character , I'm very impressed with the publisher lay-out of this bookThe only thing that I thought could be added is a companion dvd with the book .

Not for beginners, I'm a few steps above a beginner so that wasn't a problem. Nice looking book but only 3 chapters are worth anything (good exercise tutorials). The authors don't tell you that you will need 5 or more different (expensive) programs to get through the book. I should have returned it within 30 days; but that's my fault. Personally I wouldn't have paid more than $20.00 for the book, including tax.

This book is a solid next level modeling book and has excellent intermediate techniques in it. The rig in the rigging section is not quite production ready (lots of clipping) and the entire particle section is written to bu used with expensive external plugins. I recommend this book as good value but mostly for the modeling sections

 3ds Max Projects is a hands-on tutorial based book that aims to train you to be more proficient in using the different aspect of the software. In particular, this book covers modelling, rigging, lighting, particle effects and dynamics, and blending 3D with photography.All the exercises are quite detailed and includes plenty of screenshots and explanation. By the way, this book is for beginner-to-intermediate level users who already know the interface and main features of what 3ds Max can do.The modelling exercises are intensive and covers modelling of characters, one that is stylised and the other a more realistic caricature. There's also the modelling of a more inorganic subject like a tank.For some chapters, there are exercise files already set up for you, so you can just focus on learning the particular feature in the chapter, e.g. putting bones into a character that has already been modelled.The downside of the book is sometimes you'll need to use other software besides 3ds Max. Some of them include Photoshop which you should already have of course, then there's Zbrush because you need to import the characters there for touchup (sometimes using the Zbrush UV Master plugin). There's a section that requires V-Ray for rendering. The chapter on FX particles and Dynamics requires the use of Realflow for liquid, FumeFX for smoke.Overall, this 304-page paperback is an intensive course to using 3ds Max. It's good practice to get into more technical areas of using the software. Very good entry level book. This is the 5th edition of the book which usually means the author(s) have had time to fine tune the information. I found this to be true with this book. I use to do VBA programming many years ago, and this was a good refresher since I pretty much forgot everything I had previously learned. I spent 4 days reading it and relearned a lot of stuff.

I realize that nowadays books and newspapers aren't overseen by conscientious, thorough editors, but this book has more than a few misspelled or misused words, words missing in the middle of sentences or irrelevant words in the middle of sentences, and commas misplaced. Odd that a "NYT best selling author" did not proofread his own work more closely. Yes, the stories are clever, there is no disputing that, but there are also some long tangents within them that slow you down and seem to be just padding. Bottom line: it's okay.

I loved this book! I've been a songwriter, guitarist and singer for over 30 years but always needed producers and engineers to help me produce my music. My goal is to learn how to produce convincing drum tracks myself and this book is helping me do exactly that. I've already programmed a few beats and am having a blast. The author clearly explains how a drum kit works and gives a good overview/refresher of basic MIDI concepts. He also emphasizes the importance of thinking like a drummer and explains the value of creating original beats. He provides plenty of examples in a very clear, logical manner. While it was a quick read, I plan to keep this book in my studio and work through all of the exercises until I understand them thoroughly. The one-star negative review was unfair. I agree that it would help if Berklee Press would allow a peek inside. I knew it was a beginner book because I am a Berkleemusic student and familiar with Erik Hawkin's blog. Get this book if you're a newbie drum programmer or want a great practice reference.

This has been a great and very practical help for me. It shows you what beats there are in the different genres, and it's all in one place, so you can't go wrong.

I purchased this book as a requirement for a course on programming and producing drum beat I took at Berklee Music school with the Author of the book. The book covers all the fundamentals of drum beat producing and programming with very useful excercises at the end of each chapter.One must realize though, this book or any book for that matter is not going to make you an expert on the subject, but will merely scratch the surface. How far you wanna take the lessons learnt in the book by experimenting and practicing, is totally up to you.Anyone who wants to get into beat programming and producing, this book is a great starting point.

If you're anybody else, check it out!!I've been a classical pianist all my life, and have recently begun to compose and produce my own jazz compositions. But the missing element has been the drums. Bought brand new, so far its exactly what I needed to take my music to the next level

I purchased this book hoping it would help me create better drumbeats for my music. After all, the subtitle of this book is "writing & mixing killer drum grooves". Are you kidding me? 77 pages primarily filled with revelations like "this is a bass drum - it's made of wood" "this is a snare drum - it has metal chains stretched across the bottom called snares"???? What? Is this written for 2nd graders? The author goes on... "this is a sequencer - this is a tamborine - this is a keyboard controller..." Oh..my...Gawd... The CD included contains (get ready for it) the SOUNDS of a kit (this is the snare sound - krak! this is the bass drum - thud!) There are FIVE, that's right, FIVE examples of a drumbeat. And trust me, they ain't anywhere close to killer. I really should have known better. I've purchased other Berklee Press books in the past and can honestly say that 90 percent of them are the same... Lots of bun and no meat. Supposedly Berklee is going to use it as a textbook. Lord help us. I am a 58 year old professional musician. I toured for over 20 years and currently teach 50+ private students and write and record for radio, TV and other commercial clients. I am always seeking more information to make me a better artist, performer, composer and teacher. Trust me, all this book will do is lighten your wallet and raise your blood pressure.

This book is about how to do rather than what to do. If one is looking for the style related patterns or instant recipes for specific sounds, there are different books that might serve that purpose better. However, for the ones who want to learn about the main concepts and techniques of producing drum beats, this book is a well organized and valuable source.

The American Heritage History Of The 1920s & 1930's is a great book that I recommend for anyone desiring a detailed history of the era. Plenty of pictures, news articles, 13 short biographies, excerpts from radio broadcasts and mentions of previous eras.HOWEVER, I must criticize the Amazon site's reviews. In many instances, the reviews are of books and movies that DON'T MATCH the product being offered. This is confusing and not at all helpful in getting an idea of the product.

This dictionary is okay in itself, but the print is TINY! I suppose that was a trade-off to get the volume small in size, but I find I have to take it to a very bright light in order to be able to read it. If you have vision problems, I would not recommend this particular dictionary.

I work in an academic library. I noticed an English instructor purchased 30 books for her students to check out. While processing this book I noticed what a great dictionary this is and bought one for myself for home. It packs a lot of information in a small book. Even has pictures which you don't usually find in small handbook dictionaries.

It's inexpensive. Physically it's light, small. Perfect for throwing down in a backpack. People with poor vision will want to go for something larger, but most of the market for this size of a dictionary is probably college students, and they typically won't mind having smaller text size-small price for not having to lug around another massive book.Content wise I'm sure it's missing a lot of words, you can only cram so much in a book this size. That hasn't really come up for me, but if you can't find a word you can do a web search or go grab a bigger dictionary. The main point of something like this is it can always be right there with you-Phones die, some classes and libraries frown on them or you don't get service-Other dictionaries are just too big and you don't want to keep it with you.As far as definitions go, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the American Heritage Dictionary. So many times when a question arises about usage of words and we pull out a dictionary to discuss, my usage is not properly covered. Then I go to the AHD, and sure enough, they've got my back! I don't know if it is a regional thing (I'm from the midwest-live in chicago, a lot of Iowans in my family), if other areas of the country/world don't accept the way we use words here, or just an oversight, but the AHD is the only choice for a dictionary for me!You're either going to love it or hate it.If this is going to be your only dictionary to have around the house, won't have to travel with it, has to be all-inclusive/easy to read-THIS IS NOT THE DICTIONARY FOR YOU. Get something bigger.If you need something ultra light and portable that you can keep with you as the first place to go, this is a fantastic choice.

What can you say about a dictionary. They are not all created equal. I like this one and use it as my primary dictionary because of all the interesting information about the word that is included. I have a paper version and an ipad app. I just the app and enjoy the audio pronunciation. Searching for words is easy with the app.Bottom liine is that of all the dictionaries out there I prefer this one for clarity, depth if infomration, synonyms, antonyms and number of words covered.

When this first arrived, I thought it would be awkward to use because of its weight and overall size. It is not. I placed it on an end table next to my reading chair, rather than on the floor next to me. It's a beautiful dictionary, and I don't have to use a magnifying glass in order to read it. That makes it better than my Webster's dictionary.

Perfectly portable dictionary. I've always been a fan of the American Heritage Dictionary and this one doesn't disappoint. Yes, the font is a bit too small, but the information you need is there. It's not like it's a novel you have to read in it's entirety. You look up a word and that's it.

This is extensive and I would recommend it to anyone who is wanting a dictionary or an updated version of one. It is one of the better one's out there if not the best. I got the paperback because I need to transport it form place to place. If I could leave it on a desk top I would buy the hardback. It just seems so official. My cover was a bit bent in the corner when I received it but not bad enough to warrant an exchange.

I am very interested in this subject. I'd been avoiding products that clearly contain aluminum... but for the average consumer who is not a chemist it is hard to discern the truth from the marketing about products. I was using a deodorant that I thought was safe from aluminum and now I am not sure plus it also has TEA in it (and not the kind of Tea you drink). Chemicals are everywhere! We need more education for the average consumer. So far enjoying Dr. Dennis N. Crouse's book but a lot of it is over my head. Still greatly appreciate the connections he is revealing and also appreciate that he recommends products to help. There is little benefit to gain from reading books that only reveal the problems without any offer of solutions to help. Personally, I lean more toward lifestyle, food and herbs for medicine but I do believe there is a time and place for limited use of supplements and pharmaceuticals as well. We are exposed to so many chemicals today. Some careful mild detox is needful for most of us. Ideal if you have an Integrative or functional MD or DO health care practitioner who is experienced with how to detox toxins and heavy metals. Just make sure your daily elimination is great (2-3 times per day!), stay well hydrated and sweat some to help toxins depart the body on a daily basis and especially if and when you do a formal protocol. Detox with care as you do not want toxins to be pulled out and circulating through out your body. Any detox plan must have provision to completely remove toxins from the body slowly and gently as to not overwhelm the bodies daily work. The Bible teaches is Psalm 139:14 we are fearfully and wonderfully made. I hope God gives us all wisdom about what to do, eat and products to use to support our physical health. None of us are to last here forever so I believe our spiritual health should really be our first priority. I also believe our physical health is to enjoy, elevate unnecessary suffering and to promote our true mission.

This book has been very helpful for me. It has taught me how to reduce my aluminum exposure, how to remove aluminum from my brain and body and how to ameliorate some of the damage that aluminum has caused. I have been diagnosed with over 30 conditions, including five neurological disorders, I have reversed about 10 conditions with mercury chelation but my memory was not getting any better. I am very early into the aluminum removal process but I do feel a bit clearer intellectually since starting the aluminum reduction and removal. I hope to see some good results in the next few months. I highly recommend this book.

A well written book on a tough subject. The author manages to organize the investigative process for finding the root causes for these conditions and give some simple and easy to understand solutions to what has become a much too common problem.

Wow, Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging and only a small percentage of Alzheimer’s is due to genetics. There are countries that have low rates of Alzheimer’s and autism. This book is packed with information.This book is a must read for anyone who is worried about getting Alzheimer’s or is worried about their memory. If you are interested in keeping your brain fit and healthy this book will provide you with ways to do this. If you are pregnant or thinking about having a baby this book tells you about supplements which will support your infant’s brain health. Silica and vitamin D!This book gave me hope that the epidemic of Alzheimer’s and autism can be stopped!The author has conducted an exhaustive review of the scientific research and presents a solid case that aluminum is the cause of Alzheimer’s. All the recommendations the author gives about supplements and life style changes are backed by solid research.I can’t believe the amount of aluminum are bodies are exposed to on a daily basis. Once you read this book you will be reading food and pharmaceutical labels, throwing things out, filtering your water and buying supplements! Get ready to throw out your aluminum cookware and make your own baking powder! I found the fiber pills I was taking on a daily basis contained aluminum, YIKES! After reading this book you will understand why even small amounts of aluminum are something we all need to be concerned about.The table of contents is very detailed which means you can use this book as you would a reference book.The rates of Alzheimer’s and autism are skyrocketing! I saw the rise in Autism first hand as I worked in the public schools as a psychologist for 30 years. During my first year, the elementary school I worked in had one autistic child. The year I retired about 5 % of the children in the regular classrooms were on the autism spectrum. I also saw an increase in broken bones during my career. I remember asking the nurse why she thought the increase was happening. After reading this book I now know why. Aluminum interferes with the production of Vitamin D which is vital in bone development.

Dr. Crouse has spent his life looking at the effects of chemicals on the environment. In this book he has zeroed in on the effect of chemicals, specifically Aluminum, on the human body. Collecting and analyzing research from around the world, he points out that Aluminum is the root cause of Alzeheimer's disease and needs to be strictly controlled and limited in our environment. His regimen for increasing our resistance to the effects of Aluminum and for removing Aluminum from our bodies is simple and clear. Only time will tell if it is as effective as we wish in the reduction of the incidence of Alzeheimer's disease in our society. Kudos to Dr Crouse for this seminal work!!
