Review
Michael F. Bird — Ridley College, Melbourne “Craig Keener has written a compelling guide to reading Scripture experientially, eschatologically, and missionally. Keener resources the Pentecostal tradition, including its global breadth, to guide readers on how to draw from the Spirit, how to develop disciplined reading habits, how to understand debates about interpretation, and how to dutifully get the most out of the text. This book is nothing less than hermeneutics with holy fire!”Jeannine Brown — Bethel Seminary San Diego “Some may wonder if a new, fresh look at biblical hermeneutics is truly possible. Keener demonstrates that it is. He brings his scholarly biblical expertise and mastery of secondary literature together with his deep conviction that the experience of the Spirit should shape a Christian (not only a Pentecostal) reading of Scripture. . . . A wide range of readers will discover in Spirit Hermeneutics much to engage with and ponder.”Allan H. Anderson — University of Birmingham “In this benchmark study Keener combines the very best in biblical scholarship with his charismatic experience and exposure to the Majority World view of the spiritual and supernatural. This will certainly be the best book relating to Pentecostal and charismatic hermeneutics for a long time to come.”Anthony C. Thiselton — University of Nottingham “I warmly commend this informative and commonsense approach to a crucially important subject.”Wonsuk Ma — Oxford Centre for Mission Studies “This delightful book takes a bold step toward fulfilling the Spirit’s design for ‘Pentecostal’ experience to be fully integrated and manifest in the whole church.” — Expository Times "Spirit Hermeneutics is valuable both as a work of careful scholarship and as encouragement for devotional practices. . . . A necessary read for biblical scholars and lay Christian alike."

I enjoyed this book on multiple levels. 1. I appreciated the insights into Scripture hermeneutics in general. 2. The way it was intertwined with Charismatic thread without making it the main point, but a beautiful lens to truly see Scripture. 3. I felt it was written in a way a layman could grasp with just a little effort all that was written. I highly recommend this to anyone.
The concepts and perspective on hermeneutics and the impact of the global pentecostal/charismatic/renewal community are insightful and important, and I enjoyed reflecting on them. I did not enjoy the verbosity that made reading it laborious at times, like running up a sand dune. Dr. Yong's preface mentioned how this volume exceeded the length guidelines. It is too bad he didn't enforce those guidelines. This would have been a much better book. Unfortunately, at times it reads like a first draft. That said, I happily recommend it to readers interested in understanding how deliberately engaging with the Spirit in Bible interpretation works.
just like the picture
Solid, sound, and scriptural. A groundbreaking book Concerning the Holy Spirit's role in our study of God's Holy Word.
Keener is one of the best, period.
Dr. Craig S. Keener has written an easy to read yet highly scholarly masterpiece on proper Biblical Hermeneutics. In five parts, Dr. Keener walks through the necessity of proper contextual reading, which includes understanding the literacy genre and historical context. He stresses over and over that scriptures overall meaning must govern. He reminds us the scripture is the only sure word of prophecy. He tackles popular but errant charismatic teachings. He stressed the need to set aside presuppositions. He highlights the functional cessation-ism of many charismatics. He warns that personal application can go to far. He decries faith teachers and others taking scriptures out-of-context. Most importantly, He over and over stressed that Word and Spirit go together. Teaching is also a gift of the spirit and it is sometimes sorely lacking in Pentecostal / Charismatic churches. Spontaneity does not equal inspiration. There must always be sound biblical exegesis of the text. Lest I sound too negative - Experiential reading is also highlighted by Dr. Keener. There is no reason to believe we should not see the Spirit move today similarly but NOT 100% exactly like He moved in the NT. Dr. Keener as a scholar per excellence (not just a Pentecostal scholar) and this book should be read by all. I have been and will continue to blessed as I refer to it for reference. God bless Dr. Keener and everyone who reads this. Amen.
